I'm confused with the avocado issue.
My house is in the middle of a avocado grove, I have always hear of ranch dogs eating avo's that drop, eating the meaty part not the pit. You see dog food that has avocado in it? But yet I just read a list that has avocado's as being poisonous. I do not know if I can keep my dog from eating dropped avo's. With having over a dozen trees. This is quite the task. I'm pretty nervous over this, just took in a 22 month old male, from a home that could not keep him. I have fallen in love with this dog and would be heartbroken if I can't keep him due to the avo situation.
HELP???

I'm not an expert, but...

After doing a quick search, it looks like they contain a substance called persin. But it sounds like just the skin and pit are toxic. The dog food Avoderm, contains avacado. Also, there is some who think avocados can help dogs who suffer from arthritis. There is a lot of interesting reading on the subject...

Good luck. If it were me, I would just check with the vet and get their opinion. But, I think it's probably not a big deal just eating the actual fruit?!?! Just my opinion...good luck!

Our Costa Rican dogs eat lots of avocados, and they do seem to eat at least small amounts of the skin, but not the seeds. I rarely find an avocado that has not been damaged by some sort of mammal even before it hits the ground. It should be possible for you to look under your trees and note if you see hollowed out avos with the skin and seed still present. The amount of persin in the flesh shouldn't be a problem for your dogs, and the skin and seeds don't taste good. Our Costa Rican dogs live long lives. So many of the warnings about things not to eat are only about part of the plant, like the seeds in apples, which contain arsenic, while the fruit is perfectly fine. The fruit is formed to be eaten by seed dispersers while leaving the seeds intact, even after passing through the digestive tract of the dispersers.

Well with all the reading I have done on this subject, it has still left me confused!! It's seems like 50/50 on the letting him eat them. You read all the time on dogs that eat them everyday and do fine. I guess is up to the dog and how they handle it. The raccoons and rats that are having a banquet on our avo's seem to be doing fine!! I'm going to do my best to pick up fruit that falls. Wishing I could send to all you folks. We do get tried of eating them!! LOL

My vet had me feed Yoda 1/2 avocado daily for quite a while.

But Yoda got fat, so I eliminated the avo. The vet said that avocados are safe and provide a good source of vegetable based fat, it is just the seed that is the problem and dogs don't really want to eat the seed.

My BIL has to east avos every day for his heart condition - had multiple bypass surgery and avos help to keep the cholesterol down per the doctor.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL! About two years ago a friend's dog died after eating an avocado pit! They did surgery and there were complications due to the blockage. He was suffering in the end. :(

Not to worry. I'm in San Diego too with avacado trees. I asked my Specialist Internalist Vet this very question. There is a lot of missinformation on the net re avacados.

No eating of pits, could cause blockage, but the meat is good. I do not fear anything about my avacodo trees except the human avacado thiefs.

You can slice them and include them in the dog's food. It gives a good coat but will also make them (and us) fat. Too much fat will produce loose stool as with everything.

I remember reading that poison stuff on the net one night after she had just eaten some as a pup. I almost took her into the emergency vet it scared me so. But you are fine.

I quit giving them away to people because they don't appreciate them. I bring them to my handler; he and his wife really appreciate them. I'm sick of the taken for granted issue as with most people. So they get none.

After you've had avacados for awhile you get real mean to others. Its just that you get real tired of the thiefs. They come in, damage and break the trees, and take the entire crop. Then they sell them.

This stuff is what happens when my girl is gone to the shows. Otherwise, I have no problems.

Go and join the avacado grower's association. Then they will keep you up on the latest issues going on with avacados. I am a member of such and I enjoy it.

Burned out right now...gee can you tell? No free avacados. In fact, the less people know you have them the better. Its like having a safe of money in your house. It brings thiefs. So I don't share too much about this in my neighborhood. They are found gold and bring good money when sold by the thiefs.
