Are Dobermans rare these days?

I have yet to see another Doberman in any of the dog parks, pet stores, or parks here. Most of my family had never even seen a Dobie before I got my pup, and he's treated like a celebrity everywhere we go. People love him! It's pretty cool but strange. It was very hard to find him also. Anyone else feel this way?

Maybe it's a geographical thing.

I've seen two other Dobermans here. One was my friend's who drove up from KY for dock diving, the other was another Dobe in one of Jasmine's dock diving classes that drove up a few hours for class. I'm ok with them being more rare. They're not an easy breed to own.

We see a fair amount in this area. We're swimming in BYB here though.

When I had my first male, he was one of the only ones that were in our small town (this was 7 years ago). Once in a while I would see a couple who had too horribly overweight and skittish "farm" dobermans... Now I see them frequently. Not that they are a popular breed by any means, and I never really encounter another when I am out with Phoenix, but I see them I cars, and yards, etc. I think they are becoming "popular" again, sigh... I prefer them to be a best kept secret

Very rare in my town too — we also see a lot of doodles, mutts, ranch dogs (cattle dogs and BCs, mostly, or mixes of one or both) and spitz-types. A lot of people don't recognize my Dobe, I think in large part because of his natural ears, but also because of his color. A lot of people tell me they thought all Dobes were black. People who do recognize him often have outdated, silly ideas about Dobermans and are surprised to find he's such a sweetheart.

I keep seeing them pop up here and there.. I know that there are 2 others in my little town of 800. Toronto is teeming with them lol. I've never had another one in an obedience/agility class though.

Not common here. I get a loooot of attention when I'm out with Cajun, most people are like "whoa, is that a doberman?!" I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've seen a doberman out in public.

Even working at a vet clinic... we have 2 dobermans that are regular patients. That's it. And they belong to the same family.

The DNA test for DCM is only one piece of the puzzle, since DCM is polygenic. There are dogs who are homozygous positive that live into their teens without any heart issues. There are also dogs who are homozygous negative who either drop dead at the age of three or develop CHF. Good breeders will do 24 hour Holter monitoring tests and echos every year on their dogs, to try and catch any problems as early as possible.

Nope.

My friend has two.

My cousin has one.

My friend's mom is on her 2nd.

My ex boyfriend used to have one.

My mom's co worker used to have one.

My sister's friend just had to have hers put to sleep.

I don't see them at pet stores but I do see them being walked around.

There are quite a few Dobes here. We also have a very transient population. Being a military community that rotates yearly people come from all over Canada.
Rarely see any of them, when you do they aren't the best examples of their breed.

There aren't a lot, but I know of one natural eared, docked tail girl in my neighbourhood who goes to the park regularly and plays with Vanya. A couple of years back I also encountered a natural eared red girl, and it was so cute seeing her with my Zwergpinscher. The other day I actually thought of you guys cause I saw a guy walking a red cropped and docked intact boy. I didn't have a chance to go talk to the man walking him but it was nice. I see some every now and then so I wouldn't call them rare. On the other hand aside from that red boy, I don't think I had seen any cropped dobies in well over ten years. Most ones here are docked but not cropped because surprise, surprise, they come from BYBs and Puppy Mills.

Then again it is hard for me to consider anything rare when I've owned an Irish Terrier - now that is a rare breed, especially around here. The year she was born there were only about 100 registrations in Canada and the USA combined.

Rarely do I see another dobie in my area. There is one that goes to the same vet dermatologist and we sometimes run into one another. I have had Dobermans for 25 years and whenever I am and was with my Dobermans they are always the rock star on the place. So many people want to meet and greet. A lot of people stated they grew up with the breed. I am very pleased and proud when I am out and about with my girl.

They are very rare where I live. We have about 140,000 people living in this town, of which around 30,000 are military and I've only seen one other Doberman. Everywhere I take Mocha, people comment on how they haven't seen a Doberman in years, or how beautiful she is (hence her big head :rolleyesww:). Not too long ago at Petco, an older gentleman asked me what kind of dog she was. Pit Bulls and mutts are very common here.

I don't see many around here. The Boulder Creek Path, a multi-use trail through the middle of town, is like a superhighway for people walking dogs being such a dog-friendly place, I've only seen other Dobes on a couple of occasions, and they might have been the same dog.

Seems like a lot of the veterinarians and their staff members have Dobes, though.
