Just wondering if any of you are going to the big Dobe show in Fitchburg MA this October? I am thinking this might be a great place to meet breeders and start looking for another pup within the next year. I may want to get a show prospect. Do most breeders want co-ownership? Do you get complete ownership of the dog after he/she is finished? Any suggestions on how to break into showing? Any pointers on how to hire a handler?

Speaking personally, if I place an intact puppy it goes on a coownership with a contract. The end result of the contract is that once the dog is altered, I'll sign it over.

I'll be there for the last 4 days.

I'd say most breeders do want a co ownership with novices. When that co ownership ends varies-some breeders will sign the dog over when it finishes, but I think it's more common (especially with puppy bitches) for them to sign off if/when the dog is bred and they get a pick puppy. And some breeders never sign off, they stay on as co owners for the life of the dog.

As far as hiring a handler-this is where the breeder can be a big help as far as recommendations. Beyond that, I'd be spending a lot of time at shows, watching handlers in and out of the ring. There was a fairly recent thread on handlers here that mentioned some of the considerations..this is someone you'll have to be able to get along with and have good communication with. And some dogs work better for some handlers than others.

I used to show quarter horses on the national circuit so I have some pervy to "the show experience." But I did have the top trainers show my horse at the congress and the world. With horses, I could show in amateur, until I received so many points. Then I could only show open. I don't know diddly about handling a dog in the ring, so I would want to hire a professional to do this. Thanks for the info.

I will be there Sunday evening through Saturday.

I just got off a cruise ship this morning and won't be back till tomorrow night ......so I'm only just checking in at some relatives house.

I want to meet everyone so that I can put faces and names together!! This will be my first national and I am very excited about it. I've been wanting to go for several years now but with young kids and a part time job that begins in October it is hard. This year it will be too close to pass up. I've got my neighbors all pre-warned to help out with my kids and I think my husband already has it on his blackberry............ he better not even think of arranging an out of town business trip that week!!

I'm planning on bringing Louise and will try not to make a complete ass of myself in the intersex ring

I am thinking about it, if not this year, next year for sure. I went to the one in Portland in 1995 with my Talon son and had a blast. Still have stuff that I purchased there. The shopping area can blow a big hole in plastic! It would be fun meeting folks here from all over the country. So many nice people here!
