A Cat with Doberman Puppy?

While on my search for the perfect doberman breeder, I was contacted by an acquaintance asking if we'd be willing to adopt a kitten. I'm wary of it, however. I don't want anything to interfere with the purchasing of my doberman puppy (soon to be puppies).

Does anyone know how a doberman puppy would do being introduced into a home with a cat?

When we got Dodge at 10 months old, we had a cat that was about 3 (used to being around our springer who is best friends with the cat). Dodge had apparently been around cats, but it took some work to get him to not chase Edgar (the cat). Edgar is still a bit wary of Dodge, but Dodge knows that he has to be gentle with the cat. We worked a lot of "leave it" and corrections to get him to leave the cat alone. It is possible but will take a certain amount of training and patience.

the younger the puppy, the better chance they have of coexsisiting peacfully. my friend has a cat and when i got briarious i spent alot of time with diffrent people to help socialize him. briarious would sniff around and when the cat got tired of it she would let brarious know. ever since then hes been good around house cats.

We had 2 cats when we got our pup in January & one cat got used to him within a few weeks & the other one has only just realised the dog is no threat.

It didn't take too much correction giving to the pup on our part. Mostly just holding him when it looked like he was about to try & run towards them. Sometimes he still sniffs around them a little too much & we have to remind him with a quick "no" but he only wants to play with them (Wags his tail when he sees them ). He's never acted aggressive with them though.

Both our cats were 4 years old when we brought our puppy home. The cats didn't have much experience with dogs except one bad experience... But they do fine now. We had to make it very clear to the pup straight away that chasing cats was a cardinal sin in our house. Everyone gets along fine now, even loose in the house together when no one is home. A lot depends on the personality of the cat and dog, but the younger you have them when you introduce them, the better chance you will have of a good relationship.

My new puppy Atia (who's now 15 weeks old) joined the household with 6 cats. They get along fabulously, and the cats know when to let her know if they've had enough of her pestering. Atia just thinks the cats are very moody little dogs, and the cats probably think Atia is a very obnoxious cat ;)

My older Dobe, Dante, grew up with 6 cats as well when he was a little puppy. They along very well. A couple of the cats will even give Dante little lick-baths on his ears and face ;)

I had a 2 year old cat when we got Rainah as a puppy. We were just really strict with her about chasing Kiitos (cat) and made sure that there were lots of high places Kiitos could get to if she felt threatened at all. We've never had any incidents and although they aren't the best of friends, they certainly tolerate each other quite well... its just about establishing boundaries :)

I don't see a Doberpuppy and kitty living together being a problem at all provided you have and enforce rules for interaction if needed and provide places that are dog free (or cat free like puppy nap time in crate when you are away time) if applicable.

We had our cat (a former stray) for about 3 months before we brought Tess home. She's always wanted to play with him and he's always let her know when he's had enough. Chasing is not OK and we make sure she knows that.

Luckily Tess had had exposure to a cat before she ever came here, which was truly a blessing for us: her breeder's daughter has a cat and the litter learned then that felines are ok.

The night we brought her home, we had every intent of taking our time with introductions - like every article we read told us to - but Austin ended up finding his way out of the room we had him enclosed in. He wandered downstairs to find this new puppy curled up on a pillow in the living room. He didn't seem to care and they've luckily coexisted well ever since.
