Good evening! We brought home our 9 week old Doberman and the breeder had just removed the sutures that morning. Her ears are healing well. The question I have is about her ears rolling back. Is it ok to leave them like this while they heal? There is also one spot that is redder than the rest. Should I leave it be or put neosporin on it? I have a vet appointment on Tuesday. Thank you!

Hi SS. Welcome from the Pacific NW.

The ears......
Just leave them. Years ago, our cropping vet taped the ears over the head while they healed.. Not much different than what your girl's ears are doing now. It was pretty common. We have also had ears that hang down freely until they are healed enough to begin posting. It is the actual posting of the ears, along with a suitable crop, that allows the ears to stand upright. All you need to do its to let them heal. scabbing is natural and an important part of healing. And scabs form best and work best when left alone. No picking, excessive cleaning or ointment application is needed or recommended.

Member greenkouki, who responded wrote a visual tutorial on posting that is frequently recommended here on Doberman Talk. It is excellent. You should take a look at it and come back with any questions. It is strongly suggest that owners post their own dog's ears. the are many advantages to this, and virtually no downsides. Folks here are very good at helping first time Dobe puppy owners with posting. There is a learning curve, but once one get's the hang of it is becomes very routing.

Here is a link tho the above mention posting thread: How to: Posting Show Cropped Ears Using Backer Rod

Love to see some photos of your WHOLE pup! LOL

Thank you! I’ve read about 100 postings and watched a bunch of videos to prepare! I just didn’t see any about the between period and how the ears normally lay or hang. Just wanted to make sure I was doing it right!
