7 week puppy soft watery poo??? Help!!

20075 Views 29 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  LindaH
Hello folks. I adopted a 7 week old dobe pup 3 days ago. Her stool is extremely soft and sometimes even watery ( looks almost like brown urine coming out ) she used to eat pedigree but since I've had her I fed her blue buffalo wilderness. I feed her approximately 1 1/2 - 2 cups a day, 4 meals total. She weighs about 6.5 pounds to 7 pounds. She quite skinny if you ask me.

I'm also afraid she might've caught something while playing in the front yard. My neighbors have dogs that's not updated on shots. She only has her first set of shots done. She never seem to look sick. She's playful and naps a lot!

My question is has anyone tried blue buffalo, but stool was too soft and switched? If so, what did you guys feed your dobe pups??

Vet asap

First, get her to a vet asap as diarrhea can be deadly for a pup this young! Did you do a gradual switch of 1/4 new to 3/4 old food for 2 days, then 1/2 new to 1/2 old for 2 day, etc. or switch her all at once? When was she checked for worms last? It could be the food is just not going to agree with her, but I would have her vet check for giardia and coccidiosis before I changed food. You might even consider treating her for giardia even if she tests neagative as it can be hard to find and it is pretty common for a pup to come down with it from the stress of moving. If she has diarrhea after treatment, you probably should change foods. Seven wks is too early for a pup to leave its mom and littermates. Did you buy this puppy? How about some pictures! We love puppy pictures.:)

Wait...if you adopted her, why haven't you contacted the rescue organization about this issue?

I can't imagine any reputable organization allowing a pup only seven weeks old to go to a new home, anyway--in many states that is even against the law.

Do you know her medical, deworming, and vaccination history? Has she seen a vet yet?

If not, I'd get her there posthaste and see about possibly testing her for parvo--not something to wait around on, esp. at her tender age.

Best case scenario, it's just the food switch and/or parasites, but the worst case could mean a loss of your puppy, so get her to a vet, please.

I will also chime in to say go to the vet. Soon. Parvo is really bad this year. Even if it isn't parvo, a puppy that young might have any number of things.

I adopted her through craigslist. Or should I say I bought her for $150? She had her first set of shots 09/26/2011. I will take her to the vet tomorrow if her stool is still watery.

For a 7 week old pup. How much should I be feeding her each day? She's about 6.5 - 7 pounds. Will over feeding result in watery stool??
Update... She had shots for distemper, adenovirus, type2 parainfluenza, and parvovirus.
Although I feel there are many things wrong with this post, I will only comment on the food... I fed Kaiser Blue Buffalo for a couple months before finally giving up. His stool was soft or runny much of the time until we switched. It was better almost immediately.

What did you switch to? What's so wrong about this post? Did I do something really wrong?
No, no, nothing wrong. I'm just worried about the small amount of information you have. Which doesn't appear to be totally your fault at all. "Many" may be a bit too much. I'm mostly uncertain of why your puppy was so young and so cheap. For future reference, Craigslist isn't always a good place to go. Regardless, you have the puppy now and I didn't make the best choices in getting mine either, so don't feel bad.

For now, I'm giving Kaiser Purina. I'd like to switch him to better quality food, but since he's doing well on the Purina, we'll stick with that for now.

Innova Large Breed Puppy is a decent middle of the road kibble for your puppy. Lots of dogs here were brought up on it. I would strongly suggest you take your pup in for a wellness exam asap. I wouldnt expect it got much care for $150 purchase price, but thats not the puppys fault. We are also pretty exact when it comes to rescuing or adopting as neither of those terms applies when you pay money for a pup. Paying money to a byb rewards them for the wrongs they do. Like selling puppies too early so they wont have to invest any more money or time in the puppies they brought into this world. I wouldnt put a lot of faith in whatever he said he did for the pups. Best wishes for your new baby.

Is the puppy lethargic at all?

Foul, or metallic smell to the diarrhea? Visible blood or black tarry stool?

Any vomiting? Loss of appetite? Fever?

If *any* of these other symptoms are present, do not wait until morning, take the puppy to the ER vet now.

When?

Given by the vet, or purchased and given by the "breeder"?

Personally, I think that even if not showing other signs get this pup to the vet no later than tomorrow morning. With not knowing what kind of care she received before and being very young and small a little bit of diarrhea untreated can be deadly to her. She could also have anemia if only treated by your breeders worming medication caused by untreated worms (as was the case with my girl). They can go downhill exceptionally fast when this young and small. Look into the laws in your state. I'd personally call and tell them to give you your 150 back to put towards vet expenses or they will be turned in for selling puppies too young. Did they give you papers for her to prove the DOB and then sell her before 8 weeks? Heck with it, turn em in anyway.

Let us know how your little girl is doing and share lots of puppy pics when she is up and feeling better.

CaideN, did you get your pup in to see a vet today?

How is he doing?
It's worms. I'll bet everything I have in my pocket right now, which is $1.75 in quarters and a little bit of lint.

Hookworm is passed from the mother to the pup frequently through the mothers milk.

My pup also had loose stools, almost runny, but not watery runny. A fecal revealed the hooks. Your list didn't include any deworming medicine.

I'd look into that first.

I called a local vet and told him the symptoms. He asked about her shots, her current weight, playfulness, and etc. He then said it's just watery because of switching food too quickly. He told me to look for worms in the poop, but there is none that I can see. Today she pooped normal, just a little soft.

We named her Dobie because we're so creative!

We are also debating if we should crop her ears. She seem to have very soft ears!

Here are some pictures of her. Bad pictures sorry.

First day we brought her home:

I'm sorry, but I cannot believe that the vet didn't want to examine her immediately. Most vets will NOT do a diagnosis over the phone....especially on such a young puppy. A fecal sample is needed. Not all worms are visible in the stool. It requires a vet fecal exam to thoroughly rule out any intestinal parasite...I would also do a parvo swab too just to rule it out. I'm actually a bit pissed right now at what you were told. Please see the vet soon. One set of vaccines is NOT enough to make her immune to parvo.

You're right. I'm going to call another vet. I was a little relieved and at the same time confused on why he didn't want to see the pup. Who knows? He sound like he was rushing the convo and had a lot of dogs barking in the background.

Here's the thing--vets can't diagnose or treat over the phone--if they could, my pocketbook would be a whole, whole lot heavier.

Please get that cute puppy in to see a competent, reliable vet very soon.

It's all part and parcel of a puppy's first year of life, wellness checks, fecals, vaccinations--now is the time to start and you should expect to see the vet every few weeks for a while, then every few months/couple times a year in future, for routine things.

It looks like your puppy has her natural tail?

Please don't crop her--not arguing this for any political reasons, just that you seem new to Dobermans, you do NOT have a reputable and knowledgeable breeder to guide and support you thru the whole process of cropping and aftercare, and a truly pretty crop will cost you quite a bit of money--which could, IMO, be put to better use for basic health care for your girl, as well as a good positive methods training class to get you guys started on the right path.

And, just aesthetically, a long tail with cropped ears looks really funny, to me, anyway. If you were to put this puppy thru a tail amputation at this age, that would be very painful, as well.

I agree, no crop. She is preciously perfect just the way she is. Those pictures just kill me with cuteness with her little head tilt and eating her little foot.

It's great there is some consistency to her stool right now and she doesn't seem to be losing energy, but I wouldn't want to chance it. Worms can cause diarrhea and anemia, which is also deadly. There are many things it could be, but only 1 way to find out and that is through thorough evaluation.
