7 Month Old Ate Deoxidizer Packet - HELP!

30696 Views 17 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Q734
Alright so I'm having a nervous break down, I came home to find my dog had some how found and ripped into a small Deoxidizer packet. Now I called the vet already and they told me they couldn't do anything so maybe I should call Poison Control but from what I saw on their site they don't have anything about helping animals. What should I do? I'm willing to pay the $50 that it costs to call Poison Control but I don't want to be told just take her to the vet when the vet said they didn't know what they could do.

It's been about a half hour now and although I'm not sure how much if any she ate, I just need someone to turn to. Just a few minutes ago she threw up and made poops outside but I'm still really freaked out. Her eyes look really strange and she's a little wobbly so what do I do!?!

I can't understand why my vet wouldn't help me and so now I'm just in a panic....please help us.

Just for everyone's information the packet says "DO NOT EAT - Deoxidizer - Contains harmless absorbent for product freshness".

Edit// The inside of the packet has a black powder like residue and not the little gel balls so I'm not sure if that makes any difference.

Are there any other vets you can call?
Do you have an emergency vet who is open right now?

There is an ER vet about a half hour away I'll give them a call right now and see what they say. I'm still concerned that her primary vet wouldn't do anything to help her seeing as is I have a health care program with them for her.

Calling now, I'll update you guys ~ thanks so much.
I found this online, but I CANNOT validate its accuracy

"Our dog got ahold of and ate an entire bag of treats while we were out tonight. They even ate the packet inside the bag of treats that I guess is used for freshness but says do not eat on it. Could this be harmful to the dog? should we call the vet? They seem fine at the moment.

Ok, first of all I was waiting for a call back from the Vet when I posted this, so all of you who are cursing me because I was online and not calling I am not stupid and I did that already.

Secondly, my vet called back and said Deoxidizer (which is what the packet was) is not deadly in animal companions if only a small dose is ingested. It may cause an upset stomache or loose stools.

Now if it were to be ingested in a large quanity (such as multiple packets) then there could be greater intestinal problems.

Just thought I would share."

I would try to get ahold of someone who can tell you if this is right or not. I'm guessing that it has probably been too long since he ate it to try to make him vomit--BUT I AM NOT A VET!

If you are worried I would call another vet or go to the ER vet, but if it's like most other ones, it's silica and won't cause much of a problem. Especially if it was just a single packet. At most it would be some stomach upset from eating something weird.

If you can't get a vet, call poison control. I've called them several times over the year about animals and they were very helpful. Good luck!

Thank you all for your concern and super fast responses I took your advice and called the ER vet who suggested calling the Animal Poison Control. They told me the same things as you all said about it not being deadly and will just make her sick...

She already threw up everything twice so I think she should be running on empty but the ER vet said to watch her and bring her in if I'm concerned later tonight. Luckily the ER vet is open 24 hours so if anything terrible happens I'll rush her in...

I can't help but still be worried even with everyone saying she should be okay because like all our dobies she's my baby.

Hope she feels better soon. I had never had to call Animal Poison Control until I got Flirt. once she got into Visine and one into my step-son's face soap strong for teenage years :) Oh and once the other step son left out sugar free gum with xylitol and I had to make her throw up :(

What is it with dobes getting into stuff they aren't supposed too or well everything for that matter! I swear I can't do anything without her nose in my business - hey, hey mommy whatcha doing? can I help? - but yea that extends to eating stuff they aren't supposed to.

I swear my baby girl is the most unhelpful, helpful person ...er dog.. I ever met.

Anyways thank you again all, I love that I can always turn to DT when I'm in a bind so if anyone new to the forum reads this feel lucky you found such a great community. :)

thank God she is ok, it always amazes me that the things you would think they would be interested in don't ever interest them and the things you least likely think they would go for end up being top of the list. what is it with these doberbabies?? I think they intentionally want to make us all nuts. lol.

I have a little Canine 911 posted on our refrigerator. Some of the contents came from this thread.

Our girl has gotten wise to the peroxide thing & is damn near impossible to induce w/o a shot but while it worked it was a dogsend.

I've spiked it w/beef broth before but that only worked once. :/
I'd imagine diluting it too much anyway would lose any medicinal effect.

The last time I managed to get her to toss I had to put salt in the mix- she gives me this awful look afterward knowing I'm the reason her stomach's upset. It really sucks. :(
