i'm a first time dobe owner - i have read on this forum how they like to rough play with each other(i had no idea)
my jetta (pictured in the middle) likes to play rough with my Brussels griffon who is 11 year old -to a point then we have to stop it sometimes before it gets out of hand
i live in a small country side town - dobermans are that that common in my area
we walk our dog on this path that goes for 14k - the path also goes into a dog park if u choose (which i stay away from - i do not like dog parks as some of u on this forum -for many reasons)
the other day i encounter not 1 but 2 dobes - during the walk - we chat, etc....- all 3 are getting antsy with each other - so i say lets go to the park and let them get off some steam - we all agree
OMG - what a a scene - they went nuts together - total mayhem - jaws snapping howling - the rough play was off the charts - i loved it! it was all good rough play - never seen that before with same breeds playing with each other - the best part all 3 of us owners let are dogs go - not over re acting (hence why i do not like dog parks)
- no harm done to any of them -
i did see some of the people there were a little stand offish - 4 of them left right away when we entered the park - and 3 of them left when they started to play rough
there were about 10 other dogs there - some of the dogs didn't even join in cause they couldn't - nor did our 3 dogs include them their group - they were so much into each other
what a treat to watch!!! loved every minute!!
now i know the Doberman way when they play with each other - not for the faint hearted if u are an outsider and does not know anything about the breed
- beautiful!! highly recommended - what a day!!!

Yes, what Kansadobe said ^^^^^. A Doberman in a full blown fighting frenzy won't even know whether it's is you or the other dog it is tearing apart. Over 40 years after breaking up an all out dog fight, I still carry the scars on my hand and arm from instinctively trying to keep my boys from killing each other. My hand has never been the same. Plus.... Today, an emergency room visit, like I required, would cost many thousands of dollars.

Also, and just as important, even one serious incident between your dog and another could basically change their demeanor towards other dogs for life. I made the decision, when I got my most recent boy, that he would never be off leash in any public venue. 7 years later, I am happy and he is happy, safe and totally non-reactive to other dogs.
