1st heat 6 months?

Im not sure if she is coming into heat or not, but Rommel is VERY VERY interested. I have not seen ANY bleeding at all. Would it be normal for a bitch to come into heat at 6 months old? Also, I have heard that a UTI could cause some males to be "more interested" is that true?

He will be neutered hopefully by the end of summer. I think I mentioned it before but after changing vets AGAIN, we found out that Rommel DOES have a thyroid issue and did in fact need supplementation. We are having some issues getting his levels right, he is VERY lethargic right now and just being all around weird. I would like to wait until all of this is straightened out, and the neuter will be next. I just don't feel like it would be in his best interest to mess with it right now, its not about drives or anything.
I totally agree with your thoughts on that. I would honestly wait until his levels are good and stable for a period of time. However long that might take, whether it be a few months a year or more. It is not impossible to keep two opposite sexes apart when one is in heat. Especially when you don't have small children in the house opening doors and kennels that should remain closed. If I did it, with no casualties :) you can certainly do it with all your expertise in dogs.

Thanks! I am certainly no expert...but I had about the same line of thinking as you did. If I were in a different situation where **I** personally could not make sure they were separated should she come into season, I might feel differently. I just feel like it would be better for him to wait until he is physically and mentally more stable.
Glad you got Ziris's problems figured out :) Lexus went through the vaginitis as well, and it cleared up just fine for her. She also had her heat at right about 6 1/2 months old too, just for your info. BTW, last thing my vet said about raw food was it will cause infections in their mouths:nocom: ...whatever ;)
I am glad you were quick to figure out what was bothering Ziris. Poor Rom on the thyroid issues. That should be easy enough to fix hopefully. You are such a good Dobermom! I hope they both get back to normal soon.
I am sorry you have having such a hard time with the vets. Too bad we can't all have Dr. Kim as our vet isn't it? Mine (and me too) would also love the added bonus of meeting Rah.
Are you into holistic vets? Here is a list that might help: http://www.holisticvetlist.com/
Glad to hear she's on the mend. Hope Rommel is feeling better soon too.
Thanks! I checked the holistic vet list, the closest one to me is about an hour and a half...it's in Wilmington. But, I still may check into it.
6 months is the "standard" age to start watching for the first season. It's not only possible, it happens all the time. And yes, some males will be very interested before they come in. My boys all are. One in particular (Crosby) is just terrible beginning two weeks ahead of time.
Silly me responding to the original post before reading through all 3 pages of responses. Oh well. I suppose it still doesn't change the fact that can still go into season at any time.
Well....just an update. I DO think Ziris is coming into heat after all. She is starting to swell. I still have not seen ANY blood at all, but she is for sure starting to swell. I am still giving her the meds for Vaginitis.

I ordered three pair of the "panties" from Sunnyhill designs. I mailed her a check this morning, so hopefully I will have them before to long, just in case.

Would I count the start of her heat as the first day I noticed her swelling? Like I said...I havent seen any blood. Maybe a silent heat? Or she will start bleeding in a few days?
As far as I know you start counting from the first day of bleeding. FiFi just finished her first heat - bleeding for 21 days.....

Day 1 of a heat cycle is the first day you see blood. With my bitches, there's usually been a 7-14 day lag between when they started to swell and when they actually started having any discharge and really went into season. But every bitch is different.

It seems like they do the most swelling at the first season, too..the poor things wind up looking like some of those monkey butts you see at the zoo. And every doberman bitch I've ever owned became a total hormonal mess during their first season-they just didn't have a sensible thought in their brains.

LOLOL. That swelling is never quite as extreme after the first season, IMO..but that first one....WOW!!!!!

Hahaha!!! ******* was a major monkey butt, and it took a long time to go back to normal. She was also a hormonal mess, and did not no what was going on at all, in fact she seemed very frazzled! Her nipples are still enlarged, I don't think they will ever go back to normal size.

Someone told me to feed 1 tsp parsley a day for that.... haven't tried it though....

Razzle gets a tablespoon of parsley in every meal for about 2 months after a season. It definitely helps reduce the risk of false pregnancies and milk production-but their nipples kind of go through stages when you leave them intact no matter what..they'll get bigger when they go into season, shrink back down a bit after they go out, get bigger again, etc.

Didnt you also say chloraphyll (Did I spell that right?) helps reduce the smell? I think I will go to GNC and get some. Maybe I will catch it early enough we wont have a stinky girl. How much do I give her? She will eat ANYTHING.
Murreydobe, Do you feed fresh or dried parsley?
