Hi there i was wondering if anyone could help me with my growing concern over our doberman pup.

He basically has a limp... But its more than that.

Anyway it started by our hyperactive 2 yr old German Shepherd bounding into him on a walk about 3 weeks ago, she knocked him over and he yelped like iv never heard before for a minute or so. Anyway we took them both straight home as we didn't want him to make any possible problems worse and it was dark so we couldn't check him over.

Once home we checked him over, no breaks, and he let us massage and touch every part of his rear leg. No nipping or yelping. So as the vets were closed we set him to rest in his cage and decided to see how he was after a night. The morning after he still had a slight limp and wasn't putting as much weight on the rear leg as usual, but he could run/jump and play as he normally would with our GSD! Despite us trying to stop him!! So we said we'd give him a day or so before we saw what the vets thought. A couple days passed and his limp went away.

Anyway last week he started with a limp again. On the same leg, But he'd wake up and limp have a sleep then wake up and be ok and he alternated like this through the day. After speaking to a breeder she suggested it was most likely just growing pains and there was no need to consult a vet. So trusting her judgement we just rested him. Anyway the next day he was fine. and the day after that he was back to alternating through limping and not. This went on for about 3 days until today.

He has now started limping on both of his left legs, and when stood eating he is placing his weight onto both of his right! Now i know this isn't normal. I just want some advice. The vets are getting contacted tomorrow. (They are only open 3 times a week for 2 hours each day) He is eating fine. But just isn't his usual happy self today.

Any opinions on this would be appreciated.

thanks in advance.

My Dexter was sort of "rescued" from a greedy breeder, came to us because of a bad limp.

X ray showed a hairline fracture near the growth plate in one of his back legs, since it had healed as much as it could, not much to be done, the limp would stay. (surgery was out)

Vet recommended taking some weight off him and lots of exercise to build it up. One year. Later, you'd never know it was the same dobe.

Hairline fractures like this happen in puppy, the vet said. But since this just happened, you will be in a better position to find out what the real injury was, and maybe something can be down.

Keep us posted!

Does he tuck her leg up? Are any of his toes swollen? If this a hind foot or front foot? I'm wondering if he might have a broken toe or foot. In the interim, you probably should take him in and see what the vet says.

Thank you for you replies... Yeh i know we should have had him to the vets 3 weeks ago, but we've all done it... Accidents happen late on so we let them sleep it off and when we see an improvement we presume its somethign minor such as a miuscle strain!

I'm not trying to save a little money by avoiding the vets or anything. My dogs are my kids and are very much spoilt rotten! Anyway... im under the impression now that he's in quite a bit of discomfort, more noticeable when he's trying to get comfy to sleep. He's a groaner anyway when he's tired but this is somewhat different to usual.

To the question asked, he lifts his leg just of the floor about an inch or so. He started with just the bag leg this morning, lifting it, as the day progressed, uk time and almost midnight now, the discomfort seems to have gone to his front leg on the same side also. Hence him putting all of his weight on to one side.

I feel terrible for not taking him to the vets! I am keeping my fingers crossed that my misjudgement isn't gonna have done him any permanent damage.

Hi,

Yes we have all--at least I have--been guilty of thinking this would pass, for my dogs as well as myself. At least you are taking him in now. Good for you and good for him. Most all of us understand the part of them being our babies. Please keep us all posted as to what the vet says. Could be a sprain, could be a cracked bone, who knows. Don't beat yourself up. You will both feel better soon.

Freya fell out of the bed. She started limping and then she would stop and then she would limp again. this went on for about 2 weeks and i figured something was wrong. NOPE!!! just growing pains. they call it "shifting leg syndrome" the vet said it would last up to a year. she seems to be getting better. every now and then she seems to be more uncomfortable than normal.

I hope everything turns out alright, its scary when we dont know whats wrong, but you cant keep thinking what if or blaming yourself for not doing something sooner. Sometimes you just dont know. At the time it seemed as if it had been ok after resting. I was not so paranoid about my dogs before my older one almost died on me from complications after a surgery, now every little thing has me wanting to run to a vet.

I hope you get good news and I will be praying for a good outcome for you. Let us know when you find out something, we will all be anxiously awaiting news.

Seeing the vet at 2.30, he has gone back to just limping on his rear leg now, but still getting the vets opinion. Hopefully he will tell us to stop worrying and that he's fine :)

Back from the vets, not bad news. Vets say its unlikely something is fractured and think it is pano. They gave us some anti inflammatory, and told us bed rest and little bits of exercise should do the trick. if not go back in a few week.. then they will x-ray. but he said he can't se it having to come to that :)

Glad to hear it but make sure to keep him on restricted activity especially if he is on pain meds (anti-inflammatories) or he could over do it and make it worse again. I do believe little bits of controlled exercise are very good for pano, just not free running, jumping, leaping :)
