Show Ring Literature

Besides the stickied information threads, are there are any books one'd recommend for someone not familiar with conformation to read?

Various performance trials have always been easy to get a handle on but, with Penelope, we never really attended conformation events. The closest we got was looking at some IABCA silliness (for the fun of it) before she passed away.

My schedule is tight (studying for boards+organ system blocks) but I'm hoping to attend a small show early next year and, in the meantime, would enjoy any kind of literature to help me understand the little things like etiquette, classes, terms, show order, etc as well as the big things like what it's like to show one's own dog (owner handled or not). The more I know beforehand, the better questions I can ask of breeders in the future.

The AKC has some information brochures/booklets that explain Conformation shows - I have not looked for them for a long time, but I'm sure they are on the AKC website somewhere. I have a good book called "Raising a Champion: A beginners guide to showing dogs" by A. Meredith John and Carole L. Richards

Perfect! I saw there were many conformation-related books but it's tough to figure out which ones are "meaty" enough to learn from outside of "An Eye for a Dog".

Also, along with the books (How to Raise a Champion is a particularly good one, I think) and brochures one of the best ways to learn about showing in the conformation ring is to find a handling class to go to. There is a Chapter Club in Florida--DPC of Florida. http:wwwdpcfl.org/

I'd contact them and see if they have any suggestions for someone offering conformation classes in the Tallahassee area. Learning about conformation showing (after you've done some reading so you know what classes are and what would be an appropriate one for your dog and whether or not to owner handle) (for the record I was an owner handler back in the last century when there were even fewer of us than there are now and showed my own first dog and put his AKC and Canadian Championships on him--so don't let people tell you it can't be done).

Good luck...

Wasn't there a great video about judging Dobermans that was put together a year or two ago using footage from the National? Is it on Youtube?

Thanks! I've been interested in conformation and would definitely not be opposed to doing so with my next dog with his/her breeder's blessing. More than anything, developing strong working relationship with my dog is a primary goal.

There are some really great articles on the dpca to read through as well as the illustrated standard. Are you planning to have a puppy in the near future? There are some good breeder handlers in Florida who you may want to consider purchasing from so you can get 1 on 1 handling and grooming lessons and mentorship.

I've been on the fence between a puppy vs young adult in a ~2 year timeframe. It's going to depend on what residency I decide upon (I'm a medical student) as some specialties are pretty laidback with respect to schedules. Regardless, I'm hoping to join the Florida chapter of the DPCA to learn, volunteer, develop my eye, and think more about my longterm dog-related goals.

I didn't even notice that you lived in Tallahassee - FSU class of 1984 here (College of Business)!!
I currently live near Philadelphia now, but am from St. Petersburg. I drove down to Tallahassee with my Mabel last February for some shows, and then went on to visit family. You can check Infodog for when those shows come around again - It should be the end of February. There are also 2 weeks of BIG shows in Brooksville in January every year. There are big entries and lots of dogs from all over - not just the South Eastern states.

Alright! FSU is a gorgeous campus. I loved walking Penelope (and now my foster) there.

I'll 100% be at the Feb North FL Classic Cluster since it's about 10m from my place. Rotating in Daytona next summer so, thankfully, it will be less of a drive to attend more events once my rotation schedule is hashed out. Dog sports in general seem more active a tad further south here in FL.

I go for a variety of sources so I can try various things and see what works. For books I have:

- An Eye for a Dog - Robert W. Cole
- New Secrets of Successful Show Dog Handling - Peter Green & Mario Migliorini
- Building Blocks of Performance - Bobbie Anderson & Tracy Libby
- Structure in Action - Pat Hastings
- Another Piece of the Puzzle - Pat Hastings
- Tricks of the Trade - Pat Hastings

I also have several rally, obedience, agility, IPO/IGP books. I find different perspectives help with figuring out how to handle YOUR dog instead of just the kind of dogs each author is used to.

I also have several rally, obedience, agility, IPO/IGP books. I find different perspectives help with figuring out how to handle YOUR dog instead of just the kind of dogs each author is used to.
Good point. Penelope was an enthusiastic student who had an instinct for learning/teamwork so I ended up sticking to what worked for us (CogDog radio and Fenzi). The more I know, the better a teacher I can be to dog #2.

I love that this text is about as long as one of my pathology books but 1/8th the price.

Bigger population in the southern half of Florida for sure! Brooksville is a popular spot for both dogs shows and horse shows. I don't know the east coast that well, and moved away from Florida before I got into showing dogs. .... so don't know the venues well.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to pop down there at the right time. The furthest we've gone is Morriston (for barn hunt) but it will be nice to keep tabs on infodog, see what lines, and make the experience a pleasure. So much to learn and enjoy!

Just wanted to add a last thank you for everyone's suggestions. Conformation comes across as both art and a battle of determination (with a dash of luck). Certainly something I'd like to experience firsthand.

Waiting for the right time and breeder is tough but it's a journey to be savoured.
