Newton's First Show!

Newton and I competed in our first show this last weekend. I was really nervous on Saturday and didn't handle well, but I was proud of how well Newton did with all the excitement. Thankfully the judge was super nice (Mr Edd Bivin), which helped calm the nerves quite a bit. I think I did much better on Sunday, knowing what to expect and Newton seemed more relaxed too! Since we were the only dog in our class both days we got to try for Winner's Dog. No points, but I'm happy with how everything turned out. It was a great learning experience and I've already entered two more shows in September!

Even though he was the only dog, he's still proud of his blue ribbons!

That's a fairly nice gate and a well timed shot. It also looks like you're stepping well with him. The only thing I might add is to try to get him a step in front of you or so and look straight ahead unless he does something funky. You look ahead, you go straight, he goes straight and you look straighter to the judge. You look down at him and you chance mistepping or not running as straight causing or making him look like he's not running straight. I try to pretend like I'm running towards the judge's shoulder and that's where I look so that he's going more straight on to the judge. Looks like he has nice focus. Is he aware of his rear end yet? Mav isn't lol. He couldn't stack his back legs if his life depended on it but we are working on it and he's getting better.

I love getting Edd Bivin as the first show judge for a puppy. He is really nice with puppies, has soft hands--doesn't scare them to death. And, as a bonus he is also nice to nervous handlers.

Lucky you and Newton for his first show.

That picture of us moving is from the first day and I was so nervous, I pretty much forgot all my training. lol The judge had me try it again, because I was almost sprinting! He said, "Relax, it's not a race. Go ahead and try it again." I was grateful that he was so kind!

As far as Newton's hind end - no, he is not aware at all! He likes them all splayed out for some reason. The woman I've been working with said not to worry about it yet. With puppies we want to get their front perfect first, then we'll worry about the back.

It really is addicting and equally frustrating. At least in the pix you look great! Can't even tell you're nervous. I puked my first couple of times do you're ahead of me!

you can do both. You can rescue and still have a show quality. Don't have to breed but can enjoy them all.

"He couldn't stack his back legs if his life depended on it but we are working on it and he's getting better."

He will quicker then you think. Its all about the repetition. We work with ours stacking and running around the yard on lead with a dog in front and a dog behind for practice. We do this at least once a day and when we have time we will do it multiple times a day. No more then 10 minutes a time. Stacking maybe four or five times a day, for just a couple of minutes each time.

Every time you go into a ring, you will get more confidence unless you have a d**K for a judge. And they are out there. But the judges that help calm novices can do so much for the event. You have a bad experience and you are less likely to come back. With declining numbers, you'd think a judge would bend over backwards, but they don't. Kudos to the judges that calm. Whether confirmation, obedience, rally, agility or schutzhund. You look great and so does your dog! Congratulations!

Were you in Marshfield, Nox!?

His next show is on the 24th in Sheboygan. I think that may be it for awhile, not a lot going on around here in the next few months.
