Well my tickets came last week for Westminster and they are so pretty! I'm heading to New York February 6th and returning to Toronto Feb 11th. I'm staying at Broadway/Times Square area and I'm looking forward to my trip.
I've never been to NY so if anyone has some must see, must eat at, must go to comments, please let me know as it's my first time ever in the Big Apple.
The dog shows are not until Monday & Tuesday, so we'll have Friday night, Saturday & Sunday to explore the city.
Does anyone know how I go about getting a list of dobermans that are entered? Also are there venders there like at most dog shows?
I'm so excited to be going and I promise I'll take a lot of pictures!

No one will know what dobermans are entered until the show begins, you'll have to buy a catalog there. Okay-here's a spoiler-I do know that Ch. Cambria's The Captain will be there, since I'm good friends with his family.
I'm sure you'll see far more vendors there than at any dog show you've ever been to before.
I hate, hate, hate NYC so I'm the last one to be giving advice about what to do there..I avoid it like the plague. But have a good time at the show!
I'll be arriving Monday evening after work I don't have any dobes entered but am hoping to watch! One of my Italian Greyhounds is being shown. If you have a chance to catch Italian Greyhounds, my dog is catalog #7 (CH Raindance Like The Wind) and will be benched with breed I think IGs are on around 2pm on the Tuesday.
NYC is great to visit. I used to live there and didnt enjoy that very much.
You must go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. One of the top museums in the world... one of my faves....
See all the freaks in Times Square... China town is meh... but some people just have to go see it. The statue of liberty is reopening its crown and if you have never been you really should... Central Park and all those beautiful homes that line it is always worth a nice stroll.. (though you will need to bundle up!)
Go ice skating in Rockafeller Center for a touristy way to spend the afternoon... there is the Empire State and Chrysler Bulidings....
I personally am a foodie and you can find some great Cuban / Puerto Rican food if you head up to the Bronx.
Oh my gosh...how FUN!!!!!!!! Uhm, can you call me while you are there, tell me about the vendors and I will give you my order???? LOL!
HAVE A GREAT TIME!!! That is so exciting. I will be at the SE Regionals in South Carolina....whooohoooo (not) NOTHING like where your going, that is so cool.

How COOL is that!!!!! the closest I ever got to Westminster was house and DOg sitting for someone whose dog was entered!! lol... Have tons of fun. Can't wait to see all your photos!
I'm a bit jealous too! I can't even watch Westminster on TV because I don't have cable... maybe I will find out when it's being aired, make sure I have the time off work, and go watch it at my mom's or something. Maybe sneak Thakoon up the back stairs :biggthump (she doesn't mind, but the building managers probably would).
I'm sure you'll have a great time! I've always wanted to go to NYC, but to be honest, NYC SCARES me a little. It's just so big, and so different from "my island."
We used to hold Westminister parties!!!! For those of us that couldn't go, lol. we had a blast. We always taped it too, so we could watch it over and over again.

Oh wow! Westminster dog show! Have a great time!
Sounds fun Kristin! I've never been to the big apple. Does anyone know when it will air and what station is broadcasting it? The breed judging usually gets posted on the wkc website a few days after the actual show

Although I could never see myself living in a big city, I do love to visit them. The fast pace really gets you moving! Cities are also a great place to people watch too!
One thing to do that was a must for me {used to work up there a lot but we were confined to where we were staying pretty much, working 12-14hr days in a telecom center} is check out the Diamond District
Even if your like me & not much a jewelry person there's not much like walking down an entire street & just being blinded by hundreds of millions of dollars of high end diamond jewelry. Doesnt hurt to try on a million dollar necklace here & there just for fun either! LOL
so jealous too, work just doesn't allow me to go, top of the things to do when I retire list. Have a great time, and so you know, there are other shows going on there on the weekend, I know there are some big toy dog specialties, close to the gardens. Maybe someone knows of others that weekend too.
I haven't had more than a day off here or there in 2 years, and over 5 years before that, so I'm due for some time off. It will only be 4 work days off as my time spans the weekend.
Toy breed owners don't take offence, but the toys are my least favorite group. Sorry.
I did think of one thing I really enjoyed the last time I was forced to be in NYC: the Cloisters. This is a branch of the Met, their collection from medieval Europe. It's a bit out of the way, but I think well worth it if you have the time.

If you have decent weather - or big time cold weather gear with you, take the bus tour of the city in one of the double decker buses and sit up top for spectacular views - Greyline is a good company for this. It is a great way to get a glimpse of Manhatten beyond just midtown. Give yourself a whole day for the tour as you can get off and then get back on another bus after walking around some.
Do 5th ave and even if you are not Catholic, take a quick tour of St. Patricks Cathedral - as someone else metioned, the Diamond district is very cool - but Saturdays are not a good day for it as most of the stores are owned by Orthodox Jews and they are closed on Saturday for the Sabbath - actually a weekday is best for this. Macy's is also really neat for shopping as is just has EVERYTHING. The store itself is a little grungy IMHO - but you can't beat it for how much merchindise there is.
Great food is every where, but my personal favorite is just a slice of pizza at one of the many pizza shops - there is a good one right across from the main entrance of Macy's. If you like nuts, the nut vendors cook up really good coated nuts & peanuts - a very yummy snack.
I love NYC, but only get there about 2x a year for some shopping and occasionally a Broadway show - LOVE a good show!! I've actually never been to Westminster - maybe someday with one of my own dogs... I hear that it is not a great venue for the people showing. I know that owners often hire guards to sit with the dogs and guard them.

Reds- You are sooooo lucky! I can't wait to hear all about it. If you are allowed to take pics please please share!
We went to NYC for Thanks Giving one year. We had so much fun. You could take a tour of the Empire State Bldg its cool. Among other things the tour takes you up to the top of the building. You can go outside and look out over the city.
What ever you do, do not eat at Broadway Joe's IT WAS TERRIBLE It was dirty, our waiter was drunk he dropped a glass of water on me it shattered, and he thought it was funny. We did not stay for dinner.
Little Italy was fun we ate at La Luna.

AH - I envy you. Manhattan is my home town. I miss it SO much... you wouldn't have time to do 1/100th of the things you'd love to do. I think the Cloisters, where I spent hundreds of hours of my youth, is a hidden treasure, but for the most impact, the Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planetarium, which are contiguous to each other, are the ultimate in world-class museums (the Planetarium is all redone, and VERY state of the art), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and/or the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Guggenheim, if you are a modern art lover. The Empire State Building is very breath-taking, and lots of people still love to go to Radio City Music Hall to see the Rockettes... it's all in what interests you. This (imho) is the wrong time of year for the wonderful Circle Line boat ride around the island, and I wouldn't do the double-decker bus, but that's just me - I can't think like a visitor. Some people just want to go to Central Park West, to see the Dakota, the building John and Yoko lived in, and Lauren Bacall and other famous people...
Whatever you do, please blow my city a kiss for me! Lois
I will send NYC your kisses while I'm there! I will be looking forward to the dog shows for many reasons, but I think sitting still for a few hours will be a bonus! I'm gonna be walking my butt off Saturday & Sunday!
I will make sure to do that! Good luck and I look forward to cheering you on!
