The sudden death of my 10 year old dobie a week ago to DCM brought me to this forum. Thank you for the article. It's good to know I'm not the only one struggling with the guilt that her death may be harder than some of my relatives passing. I also had the daunting task of explains to my 3.5 year old where savannah went. Has anyone read "Up In heaven"? It's a good book about a dog who sent his little boy dreams of her to make him feel better. Couldn't get through reading it to my daughter without bawling.

If you have a dog, you will most likely outlive it; to get a dog is to open yourself to profound joy and, prospectively, to equally profound sadness.

I think Rudyard Kipling summed it up a hundred years ago with "The Power of the Dog."

So hard to lose your best friend and companion...

Will miss her so much. When do the tears stop? When does the grieving end?

Welcome. Please consider sharing your girl with us, and your grief. There are so many here that understand your loss, and it may help.

Excellent article. Writing does so much to help heal, and he does it very well. I, too, think he should be invited to DT.

Lexus - Blue Lady of Love

I had to have Lexus my 12 year old Blue put to sleep on Christmas Eve, it has been hard for me as well as my 2 year old Laila. Laila is looking for Lexus and whimpering. The tears will eventually stop by not the remembrance. A whole was just snatched into my heart.

They literally take a piece of your heart with them when they leave.

Thank you for the article. Our Maximus died of DCM at the age of 5 a little over 3 months ago. It was TOTALLY unexpected, his just dropped dead in front of me and my daughter as we were playing with him outside. I still cry even though we got a new pup couple weeks ago. She is a sweetheart, but it doesnt take away the pain of losing Max...
