Beaumont67, I just lost my sweet Greta last Saturday. She was 10 years and 10 weeks old. I got her when she was 6 weeks and one day old and we never spent a night apart in all that time.

This morning at the half hour of her death last week, I brought her tin of ashes and her collar into bed with me and cried and cried and cried. In fact, I'm crying again now and have cried off and on all day long since she died, even sitting at my desk at work. The best feeling I've felt in the past week is numbness. Numbness is the new happy feeling in my life.

This morning I was remembering things about her. She also slept in my bed, and one time she laid her head on top of my head and it was so comfortable to me that I just went to sleep that way. She was the love and the light of my life and I don't know what I'm going to do. But I have her half sister Doberman, Hannah, and like my husband said, Hannah needs me. So I'll go on for Hannah.

I thank you for your posts and your remembrances because they have comforted me in knowing that I'm not crazy for loving a dog as much as I have loved, and will always love, my Greta.

Thank you, Beaumont67.

hannah6 ^^^^ So very sorry for you, Greta your heart-girly had the most wonderful time on this earth, and this she truly knew...feeling fully loved and always cared for, right up to the very end.
- like you & Gerta, our Amy was never away from home or family, in her entire life.
- twice this Dad traveled with our son in billiard competitions (to Japan for the World Juniors & Halifax, NS for the Canadians championships) and Mom stayed with our girl, to hold the fort down
- girls probably watched old movies, sharing a bowl of popcorn...boys on holidays and FM's had "ladies night"...(he-he)
Yes, there is something special, being with a dog for 365 days/year over its entire life span and the normal routine is their comfort zone.

I don’t know how to ease your heart felt pain hannah6 other than saying, it’s quite normal for many...you are not alone.
First 2 weeks are tough as hell, and 2 months down the road is better (think of like quit smoking, time helps heal).
My turning point came when my tears didn't come with the "why now anger" that she was gone but replaced with "JOY" that our family life was forever enriched sharing it with the unique Doberman to our needs.
- like marriage, it’s a legal contract may couples enter into...and getting a puppy, is like entering into a forever contract as well (with a twist)
- and one real difference, marriage should be for spouses life time while buying a puppy is like getting a used car that will be worn out in +/- 10 years
- sadly unlike our children, many of our dogs aren't suppose to out live us...and I had to put this canine fact into perspective
My wife retired Amy’s pillow on the corner of the leather love seat as it contained her living scent...I was happy we had her ashes saved along with her collar and I made a brick accented memorial wall in our retirement home renovation, complete with antique phone and her fav. teddy bear.

As we are only a 1 dobe family, crawling out of bed in the morning was too quiet, driving home and entering the side door, and no happy face/tail wagger to greet me, learning how to try and sleep at night, without a warm dog back pressed up against my side.
Gone was her exciting dog bark/happy vocals when she talked to me...the silence was killing me and maybe the worst/early part to accept.

Now I want to share one more touching Vet. story, with you Gerta’s mom:
Our Vet with 35 years experience told me once, he sees a very special dog once/week (in his practice) that has to be put down, and it’s the hardest part of his job and has never grown use to it..the sick/good ones, still makes him cry.
- the old dogs that are more humanized know their time has finally come...and while in pain, they do their best to still comfort their beloved owner(s)
- like lifting up a paw, for mommy or daddy's arm, even when mobility is gone
- he said, even in some dogs eyes and last mannerisms, before the fatal dose, the canine is trying to console their care-giver feelings
- maybe wishing their humans, less pain somehow/sadness & suggesting keep strong my best friend...until we meet again (I’ll be waiting)
Truly a miracle to witness when it happens, Vet said...."don't be sad for me" is the message, "I was blessed to live a great dogs life" !!

------------Kelly & (Amy - RIP @ 11.7 y/o)

Beaumont67, I have been on the forum since March and have read your many posts about Amy and Kelly and I admire you so much. You are the best owner a dog could ever have. You have my sympathy, adjusting to Amy's passing and my hopes for a long wonderful life with Kelly. Thank you for your words of wisdom on this forum and for the love you have for your dogs. If only every dog could have someone like you for their owner...

Still miss our most beautiful Amy, she was so smart, kind, sweet & true protector of loved ones.
- her close family was her entire world, all that mattered / closing up on 2 years gone, in 3 months time
- your loss feels like a parents hard grief, that has to bury their child / just hard to ever accept

Mom found this fitting poem, and your big brother (our son) helped Dad load the image tonight.
- w/LOVE, family xoxoxo best girly

Last week we moved to our country property (on 1.13 acres), into the 1960's brick bungalow that's been under extensive renovation (off & on) over the last 3 years.

As a nice surprise for Mom, I designed a "memorial Doberman wall" for our former girls.
Tanya (born 1977) and Amy - features include:
- Tanya's obedience trophy (1st place in class, after 18 weeks of daily training)
- two dog tags, from both former dogs
- Amy's favorite teddy, one of her babies
- Amy's special toy, a rubber moose (purchased at TSC)...and always hid from son's little dog Trevor
- Amy's urn/ashes & cast paw print
- Amy's last construction piece of scrap wood, for good chewing fun
- and finally a Doberman beanie baby, to complete the tribute

Incidentally, the vintage big ben alarm clock, was from my granny's egg house, on their farm...I've saved it for 50 years.
The old Northern Electric long snout telephone, was purchased at a rural garage sale 20 years ago.
- stored in my garage, until I could properly display the old antique (guessing from the 1920's)
Mantle top ledge is from a black walnut board, that was dried & planed 50 years ago...affixed to the hallway with a cut-off of white oak.
This saw milled oak plank was 60 years old, from the family farm & ends cut to length with Dads 1968 Pioneer chainsaw (w/visible burn marks)...power washed old grime off & small hardwood piece dipped in urethane (to keep the dried out bark intact).
Brick work is stacked slate (stone veneer) and PL glued in place.

This one construction project was a labor of love, and an honor to incorporate our fond doggy memories, into our newer living quarters...at the end of the hallway, right beside the master bedroom.

That's lovely Beaumont.

I too have a memorial area for my 3 angels where I keep their ashes, collars & a picture of each of them as well as a trophy that my Eddie won for best rescue at a local dog show. It brings me a great deal of comfort to know that they are still nearby. I hope your memorial wall brings you the same comfort.

Hugs to you, your wife & son as the anniversary of Amy's passing approaches.

Yes angles, that's a great name for them...me likes.
- just going to bed last night, I had a big smile on my face remembering the pair, rounding the bedroom corner
Amy's will be gone 2 full years now on month end...how the time flies.

We have lived in the same house, past 32 years and just moved last week.
In our first home, Tanya lived half of her adult live there & Amy's entire time there.
While Amy also enjoyed her last senior year, at the renovation job site most days.
- in essence, the fixer up project was Amy's second home / she never really left, the place...it was part of her makeup

Fond memories with Amy at the newer place, in her final year:
- like the day she escaped the house and waited contently for her Dad on the front cement porch, while I was off with the carpenter having a quick lunch for half an hour / we drive up the drive way, and there she is laying outside
(almost made me question, why I locked her behind the front door, in the first place)
- or the time she let one particular man (of questionable ethics) out of his car in the drive way but stopped him dead in his tracks, so he couldn't get to the front door...until I called her off & praised her for protecting me from potential business evils...

Amy looked for and found an escape route (back left door open), because a sheet of plywood covered the front window.
- and she couldn't monitor the place or properly watch for her good buddy Dad, while I was briefly gone for lunch

I ran across a 2010 photo of our senior girl, at 9.5 y/o.
- laying on the leather love seat, while I'm on the forum, late at night
- my buddy, waiting for me to take her to bed (whenever Dad was ready, fine with her)
Dear Amy - always happy when I was near by you, (we were inseparable) / photo brought me smiles & good memories, miss you sweet-pee!!

Thanks pgh dobelady, Sherryh, Hooligan, JobeyV, Maria1 & PortersMama - for your in-kind thoughts, to dear old Amy's final thread.
- still miss her charm, each & every day...always in tune with her family members, so surreal & intelligent

Mom found an interesting KARMA picture...funny, we always called Amy our "little angel" since puppy hood.
- decades from now, we are bound to meet again, and see her facial excitement & nub wagging off
- I know someone plus Tanya (first girl from Mrs England), that won't turn their loving Dad away...enjoy the message, my friends
BTW - one of my favorite photos of former Amy is a paw print, in the wet snow...a fingerprint in time, unique only to our girl.

3 years ago today, we lost our beautiful old girl Amy.
Early this morning, I accidentally called Kelly, AMY twice / when I was getting ready to go outside for dog potty.
Wife said to me, "do you know what day it is"?
I knew then, while still half asleep / pulled out my cell phone & viewed today's date...Aug. 31st / how ironic.
- so today Dad has a big Hi & Kisses, for his former girls, Amy & Tanya in heaven

Photo below - Probably our earliest picture of our loving baby, Amy with her cute milk belly & all..
- she played & rested on that LLBean dog bed for only a week or two
- but the leather couch, was more to Amy's liking, so after a month, the unused dog bed was packed away
- wee smart Amy had locked claims on her family - Mom & Dad & Boy (son) and we all went along, for the fun ride in her life's journey
Bless You my dear Girl, you turned out to be far more than we could have ever hoped for !!

------------Kelly & (Amy - RIP @ 11.7 y/o)

It doesn't matter how long they've been gone, we never forget them.
My 3 angels have been gone for 6,4 & 3 years now & there's not a day go by that I don't think of them.

Hugs to you Beaumont & to your wife & son too on this bittersweet day for your family.

Quotes, I just read - that reminded me of our dear Amy:

- "Dog" is merely "God" spelled backwards, nothing less.

- Dogs proceed us into heaven, so that there will be voices speaking well of us upon our own arrival.

Sorry for the photo size, taken +5 years ago when I bought a vintage John Deere 318 garden tractor, for snow removal.
- Amy napped beside trailer (parked in our driveway), to guard it on a warm summer afternoon / Dad thought, "she never stops to amaze me"

And an early picture - the $150 LLBean dog bed, was in only use during the first puppy month / and finally packed away.
- the human furniture, was more to Amy's liking

Every Heart Dog is different - but I'll take a stab at defining it:

That's how I define it, "a gift of a dog, just runs your inseparable world".
Congrats you two.

We got former Amy, when our son was still in high school / I said, "she is your dog - till you leave home"...

^^ I know what you mean - we were doberless for 14 years, after 1st girl passed.
Our only son was in grade12 and Dad needs a puppy again / to fill the future void.
================================================== ============

We got Amy and after a few days, I knew there was something special in this 10 week old puppy.
- I am an equal / nothing more & desire to please you (my master & family)
- show me with kindness, if digging holes in the flower beds is against family wishes / and I will stop
- show me that counter surfacing is against family rules / and I will gladly obey
- at 3 months old, went into a forest off leash / Amy puppy played close by / not off running after a squirrel
- at 5 months old, she mastered off leash sidewalk walking / and stopping automatically, at paved road intersections

In time she wisely learned "cause & effect" reasoning & many times I asked her questions, in full sentences.
- she never took her eyes off Dad, and always knew my exact whereabouts throughout life
- she was content to be on a job renovation site, and rest & wait nearby
- with age, she kept on learning / in senior years, she often read my mind
(read my front lobe thoughts, viewing the picture in my brain / something like that, no other explanation)

Amy was a fast learner & loved to please / she became as close to humanized, as a dog can ever get.
- most language intelligent, everything came easy to her

We were figuratively, joined at the hip.
- she showed me how to love a dog, just as much as ones very own child
- she liked family member kisses, right before bed time
- I'd joke with Amy / saying "you'd think Dad had peanut butter, on his lips"...LOL
- as she grew old, I started to sleep with my hand on her belly / her heart beat comforted me, until we fell asleep
- and woke up the next morning, to start the next day together

I will always miss my big sweet baby girl, her honest companionship & love for life !!
- a 4 legged gift from heaven, back in the year 2000
MomnaL and squeedobie like this.

Frank, I'm thrilled for you and your boy! Advances in stem cell treatments for a whole array of problems are really exciting to me. The more repairs that can be made by utilizing the bodies own means the better off we'll all be.

Thk you ABtheHun / from the bottom of our heart...my heart-dog Amy will be gone 6 years (end of August).
- when Amy went Paralyzed from the neck down, one night @ 11.7 years old
- sleeping with dad on a makeshift bed (living room futon)
- 2 Vets saw her in the morning / while her heart was still beating strong
- recovery was impossible & true reason uncertain
- and we assumed, maybe a series of 3-4 strokes...debilitated her

Now Degenerative Myelopathy, seems like a major cause to her deteriorated senior health // in last few years.
- still miss our special sweet-pea / knowing more, does help bring an ounce of closure
