Thank you all for sharing my grief. I think losing Toad has been harder because for the last 25 years, even though I've lost dogs (and cats) they weren't the only dog (or cat) in the household.

While I sort of have Toad's son, Burma--he spends most of his time with my friend (and the one who has taken most of my Dobes in the various performance rings to get the titles they hold--I may have a part in the training but while the conformation ring never bothered me the obedience ring generally caused me to hold my breath and be pretty rigid with fear) so effectively Burma is with her most of the time.

And poor Clark (the junior cat) is still looking for Toadie to come in the door with me any time I return from running errands.

Sigh...

Awwww Bug - I am so sorry that Toad is gone, even knowing that he had a VERY long life for a Doberman. I think the worst part for me would be coming home to a dogless house.... I have not had to do that since I got our first Doberman in January of 1993...... and I know it has been a heck of a lot longer than that for you!! Hugs to you - I'm truly in tears.

Dobebug... I am incredibly sorry to hear about your loss. He was a very special man, to you first and foremost but he was loved by many other people - just Sunday I pulled up a picture of him for someone who had never seen a fawn doberman.

It doesn't get any easier, no matter how many there were before them or how long we had them for. Whenever I talk about imagining the day I will lose Nadia, hopefully after a long full life, 14 is the amount of years I secretly imagine.

His life is too be celebrated. But that can come later... no doubt in my mind he not only went where the good dogs go, he has I'm sure, a very special place reserved for him there.

A farewell to the Toad who was more handsome than any Prince I know.

So sorry for your loss. 14 years is a good long life for a Doberman. I just lost my DJ about a month ago, and she was just 3 weeks shy of her 8th birthday. I know how you feel when you say it's strange to walk into the house without your dobe beside you. It hurts. It leaves an unrealistic hollow spot inside. I truly believe that when we get to Heaven, our beloved dogs will be there waiting. The Bible may not specifically mention canines, but it does mention horses, lions, lambs etc in Heaven, so there definitely will be animals there. If there are animals in Heaven, then Dobermans should be at the top of the list.

I'm just checking in on here for the first time in a while and I generally avoid this section altogether but I was just thinking of Toad recently.

Bug, I hope you are still hanging in there. It never gets easier no matter how many leave us. I'm glad that boy gave you a great 14 years- and you to him!

Hi Howl,

This was definitely a dog who was loved by people he didn't even know. I learned very early on (from his first dog show) that he knew a lot more people than I did. He attracted attention because of his color (fawn) and his charm and through his long life he got e-mail from people he had met (at out of the area dog shows) who had met himand wanted to know how he was doing.

I've had Dobermans for a long, long time but he was one in a million--and it turned out between his cat, Clark, looking for him to come back every time I left and returned it took only days to convince me that I clearly wasn't going to remain Dobermanless (which I'd thought I would do) and a friend kindly lent me a Toad grandson to keep me and the cat, Clark happy.

Clark still is trying to train, Joey, the loaner who tries to be a good dog and not make the cats run--but he just turned a year old recently and evidently finds it hard to believe that he shouldn't chase the cats.

My friends and I always thought that Toad's ability to meet and attract people was amazing but it seems that that continues even after his demise.

I'm just sorry you didn't meet him in person. He was one heck of a dog...

Ah Howl,

Don't cry over the Toadlette--he wouldn't want you to do that. He was among other things one of the happiest dogs I've ever had the good fortune to own.

So dry your tears and think about him doing play bows to his cats to get them to play the chase game with him (that's where the dog chases the cat down the hall all the way to the bedroom but when they come back the cat gets to chase the dog. My old cat (who is now 17 taught that game to Toad when Toad was 6 months old.)

Ah John,

That gift from the DT/CT gang and my friend Nancy to the Doberman Health Foundation Memorial made me cry the first time I read it and it made me cry again--he had the best friends--most of whom never had met him in person.

Thank you John for looking it up and posting it again.
