A week since the worst day of our lives

Our sweet baby girl died a week ago today. Capri loved and played hard for the 23 months she was on this earth. She was spayed 2/9, in recovery she arrested our vet did everything he could to save her. But it was not to be. Will I ever be able to forgive myself?

Our memorial to Capri

I'm so sorry for your loss.

She is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are her life, her love, her leader.
She will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of her heart. You owe it to her to be worthy of such devotion.

Such a touching tribute to her--she looks well loved. I’m sure she has left a huge hole in your heart, but you don’t need to kick yourself for what happened. A majority of dobermans these days carry a tendency to have heart problems; your pup may been developing that problem already before her surgery. I know your vet did the best he could do.

From the looks of your pictures you gave her a very happy life. They’re never with us long enough, but it’s especially hard to lose one so young. RIP, Capri.

We've lost older fur kids ( Dobes and Wheims) after a certain age every day is a gift. This happy, healthy, hard loving, hard working, hard playing, always on and on point ..."little" girl.. Has just left the biggest gaping hole in our hearts ..and the silence is dealing.

Thank you to each of you for taking the time to help us through ...

I'm so sorry for your loss of Capri. You gave her a good life and tried to make sure she remained healthy.

Please don't blame yourself. You must understand there is a risk with any surgery and there are also risks with not spaying a female dog. Actually, I believe there are more risks to a female's health by not spaying. You made the right decision to spay.

There are blood tests (CBC & vWd) that should be done before surgery and I hope your vet informed you. Whether the tests would have helped, if not done, will never be known.

She came from an extremely reputable breeder who always test for every possible health issue. All testing was done in her pre surgery screening as well. She was completely healthy. .15% of surgeries end in this manner, which means 99.85% don't, but that doesn't make it any easier.

I made the decision to have her spayed, which is why I blame myself. It wasn't necessary, it was a choice.....mine

Every choice we make has consequences--sometimes good, sometimes bad. All you can do is to know you made the best choice you could with the information you had. Sometimes stuff happens that you just can’t prevent or foresee.

In the case of heart failure due to a sudden arrhythmia, there may be no warning and no way of detecting the possibility exists.

An arrhythmia like that can cause a heart attack even if a dog is in the middle of playing. It may have just been her time to go.

I'm so truly sorry for your loss. 😢 You shouldn't blame yourself though, the decision you made to spay was done in her best interest. As a former vet tech, I can say that some dogs (not just Dobes) occasionally have adverse reactions to the anesthesia, and no amount of pre-op testing can determine how a particular animal's system will react. It wasn't your fault.... you did what you felt was right at that time. Spaying/neutering is the best choice one can make for their dog, if they don't intend to ever show or breed them. I know losing a furbaby is devastating, many of us here have felt that pain before. I'll keep you and ur baby in my prayers, God bless

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. You have my deepest sympathy. As others have said try not to beat yourself up, you were making the best decision you could to give your girl the best possible life.

Try and keep your head up. As difficult as it is to lose a beloved family member I hope you can take some solace knowing you provided Capri with a loving home and that's so much more than many dogs get.

Alida, I know exactly what you are feeling. Many years ago now, I had a bitch taken in for routine spaying. She never made it through and died on the operating table. I trusted the vet and even after these 30 yrs he is still my vet, but I took the blame and felt I took her to her death by my choice. It was an awful burden. I cried for weeks as if I had killed her.
I don't know what to tell you other than what the others have said, but, it wasn't your fault. If we could just know these things ahead, but we can't. We're human and we are always trying to do the best for our dogs, no matter the cost. That is what you were trying to do. She knew how much you loved her. I am just so sorry for you right now.

I picked up Capri's ashes today...ugh, bringing her home and watching my husband fall apart while holding her was almost to much.

I really appreciate being able to come here and just "talk" things out.

Thank you all again for your words of wisdom and condolences.
