Remembering Cody (2004-2014)

Just thought I would try to post up some pics of my late Cody. He came into my life in 2004 after I got engaged. My then fiance and I bought our first house together and I wanted a pup so badly that she finally gave in. Little did she know that he would become a "mommy's boy" and would be stuck to her every bit as he was stuck to me.

We visited a local breeder who had five male pups but only one was black like I wanted, so we rushed over to meet them. We sat in the yard with the pups but the black boy seemed disinterested in us. The "runt" of the litter however, kept climbing on my lap, trying to keep my attention. Still I knew that I wanted the black pup so I scooped him up and stood up. Before I could walk off I felt a tugging on my pant leg. It was the little guy again! It was settled, we were his forever.

Cody was everything to us. He was our protector, my hiking buddy, the household comedian, and our best friend. I never imagined that our lives would revolve around a dog, until we got a doberman. Its funny, between the laughter, the joy, the unconditional love of your first doberman, you start to think that it will never change, that it will last forever.........and then suddenly, forever comes.

In November of 2013 Cody was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma after taking him to the veterinarian for a limp in his front leg. After visits with a surgical specialist and oncologist, we made the heart wrenching decision to treat with palliative care only. He was such a fighter with an amazing zeal for life. He lived for six months after being diagnosed. When the disease spread to his lungs, I knew it was time to say goodbye. Cody was put to rest on May 19, 2014 in the arms of his mom and dad.

The first couple of weeks was awful. I couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, and couldn't sit still. Then my mind started playing tricks on me. I would be sitting on the couch in a house that was completely still and I would hear a thump at the other end of the house. It sounded just like Cody hopping off his bed and I would peer down the hallway almost expecting to see him. Then, sometimes when I would leave for work really early in the morning, I would hear something that was just like the noise his nails would make as he trotted down our paved walkway. It would make me spin around quickly hoping he was still there, but of course he wasn't.

Its been a year and a half since we lost our boy and we still miss him. I guess we always will. I miss the nub wiggle, the pokes, the stalking, the silliness, and the deep brown eyes that would tell a whole story by themselves. I miss the way he would watch me eat a snack, and just as I would get to the last bite, he would put his paw on my lap as if to say, "really, you're not going to share".

Maybe we'll get another pup someday. If we do, it will be because of him. It will be because of Cody. I love ya buddy........

Handsome boy! I too thought I was seeing and hearing my yorkie when he passed, it just seemed so surreal that I could go on with my life without him. I'm sure he had a good life with you guys and he'll wait for you over the bridge. Run free my friend.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and Cody-pics.
I still have a hole in my heart from each dog I have lost but would never trade the time spent with them - Dobes are such special special dogs, each one different, and despite the heartbreak I can't imagine my life without one.

"Weird things" happened around my mom's house for a week or two after my grandmother passed away. The TV turned on by itself a couple of times and my mother said a few things on her dresser were moved around. Honestly I thought she was hallucinating, but I witnessed the TV actually happen. I looked through the settings on the television expecting a timer or something to be set to turn it on but nope, no timer. It had never done that before and it hasn't done it since either.

tears..... I waited too long with my male who died 8 years ago. I am so glad you were able to make the decision before your babe suffered. I will never forget my Apollo. In fact just last night my husband called Stella Apollo. He looked at me and said "where did that come from"?

Cody was such a strong boy that it was so hard to know "when". Honestly I never saw any quit in him, ever, in his entire life. He spent ten years protecting us, I knew I had to protect him. Osteo is horrible and no pet parent should ever have to see there dog go through it.

It's obvious how important Cody was to you and your wife. You've written a wonderfully descriptive memorial that makes one feel like they knew him.

Beautiful pictures of Cody, too.

I've no doubt you're sensing him still with you. Sounds like you both provided wonderful companionship and an awesome home for him. Getting a new doberman would be an act of honoring Cody when you are ready. It is showing how great he was and how you would like another experience with another doberman.

I had some experiences after my Mom passed, also. Mainly would smell her perfume at times and a few other things. I think maybe they worry about us till they are satisfied we're okay without them and then they can move onto their next journey.

Cody always LOVED Christmas. He must have had a really good sniffer because he could always pick out his presents from under the tree. Doesn't matter if it was a chew toy, treats, or a sweater, he always knew which ones were his. When he was done opening up his gifts he was always "helpful" tearing into everyone elses.

After he was put to rest, I thought I would never want to go through the loss of another dobe. Now I know that I couldn't go the rest of my life without one. It seems like such a short time that they are with us. I always wondered if it really felt like a lifetime to him?

Your love for your Cody is evident in your beautifully written tribute.
Condolences to you and your wife on the loss of this wonderful character of a dog.

Life is so short, tomorrow is guaranteed to none of us, but having those who love us near is a comfort we would all be so lucky to have as your boy did.

Why would you not think he was with you? When my mom was dying, she was in and out of it for a day or two. She had been unresponsive for awhile. She started smiling and said "There are so many puppies here, and they are all so cute." Totally out of the blue. And later she said "I didn't know Helen Vetter passed away". Helen was my mother in law who had passed several years earlier. My mom had been told, but must have forgotten. Now that will make you sit up and smell the roses. I believe, I truly believe they (dogs and humans) visit us after they pass. It keeps me going.

Nice touching tribute, I can tell that you loved him. Man, it sucks losing a pet, that is the WORST (only) thing about having pets, esp if you have to make the decision for them. Take care.

Striving to become the most educated future Dobermann owner.
