My Doberman Passed Away

This past weekend my beautiful girl Valdez passed away. She was hiking up on Burke Mountain, collapsed and then died. I have no idea what she died from...could be heart, stroke, ....I don't know. She was only 7 years old and from what I know she was healthy. We are completely devastated and in a state of shock. I will miss her dearly as she was the best dog ever. I decided not to get an autoposy, but not knowing what happened and why is bothering me terribly. Has anyone heard of this before or gone through this?

I'm terribly sorry.

From how you describe it, is was likely from DCM.

So sorry to hear about your sweet girl. At least she was doing something she loves and was with someone she loves. Sounds like it could have been DCM? Was she holtered or echo'd?

It's so hard to tell though without an autopsy. A friend lost her dog recently, they were out running and playing one day and he died that night. Everyone thought it was DCM, but the autopsy revealed it was cancer. It was all over his body, these dogs are so stoic it's amazing what they go through without showing even a wince of pain.

So sorry to hear about your girl. It sounds like DCM to me. I've had 6 dobermans in the past 5 died from DCM. One died suddenly. Sometimes it is the best way in terms of least amount of suffering. I know it is devastating for you. Please accept my condolences. RIP Valdez...

Thank you for your reply. I never had even heard of DCM....pretty scary. I cannot believe you have had 6 dobermans in the past and 5 died from DCM. WOW!!! Honestly I don't know if I will get another Doberman....it sounds like DCM is a pretty high risk factor in this breed.

Sadly, DCM in the number one cause of death in Dobermans (roughly 50%). It can cause sudden death or it can lead to congestive heart failure.

Just lost a post explaining DCM.

I'm so sorry you lost your girl so suddenly. Losing your best friend unexpectedly is such a shock no matter why.

It does sound like the arrhythmia type of DCM which causes sudden death. The other type is congestive heart failure and much worse imo.

You can research doberman and DCM on Google and probably find multiple sources for information.

DCM is always a risk with owning a doberman as it kills approximately 50%. There are no lines of dobermans without DCM, so any breeder claiming DCM free or clear lines is ignorant and shouldn't be breeding dobermans or lying...period.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your girl.

It does sound like DCM to me also. Our oldest died in exactly the same fashion about a a year and a half ago. Energetic one moment, down the next. However, since he had been diagnosed several years before, we were certain as to the cause.

As with our dog Butcher, it sounds as though Valdez passed quickly without suffering. Although it is very little consolation right now, it is in a way, a small blessing.

My thoughts are with you,

John

So sorry for your loss

Not uncommon in Dobermans - I lost a 9 year old to sudden death - most likely a fatal arrhythmia - almost 4 years ago. She had had several cardiac ultrasounds (the last one a year before she died) with very good results but had not had a 24 hour holter monitor (EKG). I suspect that a 24 hour EKG would have shown that she was throwing PVC's.

So very sorry for your loss. Run Wild and Free.
Sounds like DCM Sudden Death.
Unfortunately the first sings of DCM in 30% of
Dobermanns is Sudden Death. They show no other symptoms. It's a terrible disease.
