Goodbye cute Cookie

Just wish to remember her by writing a few words and saying goodbye to my last pet, a rabbit named Cookie. We named her that because her head resembled the raisin cookie from the danish cookie brand Kjeldsens, a dark eye surrounded by golden fur, much like a raisin in that cookie dough.

She definitely had her own feisty character, always knowing what she wanted and making sure that I knew it, stomping her feet to get my attention, hurrying me so that she could get her food asap! She was also affectionate, I call her by name and she would come over like a cute doggie. I suppose that she shared some characteristics with them: unconditional love, enjoying head scratches and craving food.

Cookie was extremely healthy and still bouncy for her age, but the sudden onset of bloat made her deteriorate within the space of 1.5 day. I really hate this disease and can now unfortunately relate to owners here that have had to deal with this sickening condition. For rabbits, treatment could involve sucking out the stomach contents and/or surgery, both of which have poor survival rates and supposedly many vets just suggest PTS when dealing with bloat in rabbits to avoid pain for the animal. Given her advanced age and poor prognosis, my wife and I decided to keep her at home and spend all the time with her. One fear was that Cookie would be suffering so much that I would eventually still have to take her to the vet to PTS. As a small animal owner, I never have had to encounter this difficult decision and I really admire dog owners who can bravely face this sad reality and make the best choice for their pets. It is not easy and, fortunately, I suppose, I did not have to make this decision in the end.

We placed Cookie on our bed and just spent time with her, stroking her, talking with her. She seemed so tired and I kind of knew that the end was near because she was getting colder and more tired, although I was always hoping for a miracle that it was just a nasty gas episode. I picked her up one last time and her body felt so weak, I knew that it was coming. I immediately placed her back on the bed so that we could say our final goodbyes. She laid on her side and looked up one more time at my wife and I while I gently stroked her body. She was such a good girl and passed away at 9 years and 6 months. I don't think that she suffered because there was no teeth grinding or noises. She seemed to go peaceful, which gave us a little comfort. Still, it is hard to accept that a perfectly healthy bunny could go just like that due to a sudden onset of bloat. This was the first time I had a long time to say goodbye to a pet but it was extremely painful. The only solace was hopefully Cookie knew that her '2 big male and female monsters' were watching over her and trying to take care of her, comforting her. I hope that she knew that. Goodbye, sweet Cookie. I love you and miss you.

Striving to become the most educated future Dobermann owner.
