Huckleberry, my Sweet Potato Boy has died.

My sweet boy died yesterday. I'm going to copy and paste a portion of a message I sent to MomnaL this morning when she sweetly inquired about a post. I just can write a new message right now. I'm devastated.

"Thanks for you kind thoughts. I had to have him put to sleep yesterday afternoon. He was 6.5. This came out of nowhere. I'm still in shock. I will up a thread up in a couple of days. He was fine Tuesday morning. However, that evening I could tell something was off....I thought it was his neck again....so I called the vet and get a refill of his pain/anti inflammatory meds. Wednesday morning I got up early to give him his pills and watch to see if he was okay before I went to work. He was doing okay but I decided to stay home with anyway. That was 7:30 am and he was still walking. By 9:00am he was not walking much, eating, drinking, or going to the bathroom. Off to the vet we go.....

He is examined and given a high dose of pain meds and I'm told to take him to Indy for emergency back surgery. An hour and a half later we arrive at the vet in Indy. They do an exam. No deep pain present and we are told he backside is totally paralyzed.

I was told when I left Bloomington that he would be fine in 6 weeks after surgery. The vet said I could still go through with the procedure but he would still be paralyzed for 6 to 16 weeks or there would be a large chance he would never recover. So I made the decision to put him to sleep. I talked with a family friend who is a vet in Virginia and she suggested I "let him go." After I made that decision the vet in Indy said that was the right thing to do. He would not been able to pee on his own....I would have had to mash his bladder. Well and no walking. I don't think I could put him through that. Why do I feel like I gave up on him? I miss him so much.

I have had two dobermans and neither one of them as made it to 7. God, please let Chloe make it to 10! I love the dobermans breed so much but I don't know how much more I can take.

Sorry I went on and on. I'm just at a loss. I miss my sweet potato so much."

Thanks, Robin

I'm so sorry for your loss of handsome Huck. You didn't give up on him, you did right by him because you took his pain away. You took it for him and that's very selfless.

I am so sorry for your pain. The greatest love we can give our dobies is to do the most difficult decisions sometimes. It will never be easy however we owe them that dignity and more. Please take comfort knowing that you are not alone.

I'm so sorry for your loss, and don't second-guess your decision for a moment, you did right by him by not putting him through that. The more animals that come into my life, and then their physical presence leaves me, the more I learn that it's my lot to take on a bit more suffering myself so that they don't have to.

- They are gone from our sight...but never our memory.
- Gone from our hearing...but never our hearts.
- Gone from our touch...but their presence is felt.
- And the love that they gave us, never departs.

So very sorry for Huckleberry & loving family left behind.
- some things are just not very fair, but YOU did right in taking the pain away, and restoring his dignity in the final day / did what had to be done
