Unhappy Good Night Sweet Kodiak

My brother in law dropped his dog off at my mother in laws house for the next 2 weeks. Kodiak fell down a couple of steps and then fell outside while going potty. Susan (MIL) called Chris (BIL) and asked if we could have her put to sleep. Kodiak was very old, she was almost 13 years old. She should have only lived to be 7 to 9 years old. She was in constant pain due to age and other medical problems. This was not a spur of the moment idea by no means. This has been talked about for the last few months. She couldn't even sit or lay down without being in pain and discomfort. She has had 4 hip surgerys over the last 13 years. The vet also told us that she was in constant pain and her quality of life was no longer there.

She was the best dog I have ever met. She is the reason I have a dog today. The first time I met her, I got out of my boyfriend now husbands truck, started walking towards the house when I seen this massive dog running towards me with her tail wagging. I ran back to the truck jumped in rolled up the windows and locked the doors. Hubby asked me if I was going to get out, and I told him that I wasn't because I was afraid of Kodiak. He told me she was harmless and kept her away from me. He got up from the couch to go do something and Kodiak came up to me nudging my hand to pet her. She then rolled over on her back and started to cry because I wouldn't pet her belly. She won me over in just 3 hours of being around her.

She was very loyal to all of us but mainly to Chris. She has gone head to head with a few deers and has never backed down. She has caught more birds than I care to count. This dog would steal chocolate off the counter and out of the cupboards. She has had more chocolate in her 13 years than most of us would ever eat in a life time. Chocolate has never effected her in the way it does in most dogs. So the night before we all put her to sleep my MIL went to the store and got her 9 chocolate bars. She ate 8 1/2, she got chocolate chip cookies, burger, hotdogs and just lived like a queen.

She loved everyone she came in contact with, she was great with children big and small. She adored other dogs no matter what age. She didn't have a mean bone in her body at all. She was the perfect dog in a sense. She was a mixed breed, and was huge. Her highest weight was 140 which was when I first met her. If she was to stand up on her back legs she was taller than I am. I am not very tall by no means. This dog has had almost no training at all. All she knew was sit and lay down. She was never trained to walk on a leash because no matter what she stayed by your side, leash or no leash. I took her for a walk one time and hubby took her leash off to show me that we didn't need one. A few birds flew right above her head she didn't move except to look up at me. We also had a chipmonk run under some trees again she just looked up at me and kept on walking.

She was just amazing no matter what. She will be in my heart, my mind, and my thoughts forever!

That is a great story of her GM. She is in a place where the pain in no longer an issue for her. But she will always remain close to the ones that she touched and loved the most.

awww Im so sorry GM Kodiak sounds like a great dog. It is hard every time we lose a dog but there is something about that "first" dog that when they go makes us realizes how wonderful dogs are and how much to cherish your time with them.

"She couldn't even sit or lay down without being in pain and discomfort. She has had 4 hip surgerys over the last 13 years. The vet also told us that she was in constant pain and her quality of life was no longer there."

That's the second toughest thing to witness, a previously vibrant, active dog who can no longer do the things that not only make the dog happy but also define who it is.

"She has gone head to head with a few deers and has never backed down. She ate 8 1/2, she got chocolate chip cookies, burger, hotdogs and just lived like a queen."

Reading that brings tears to my eyes this morning. Niki was the terror of deer in three counties and could literally smell them out. Rabbits, rats, mice and moles virtually disappeared from our area.

And she also loved chocolate as well. On Valentines Day the first year we had her, my wife left for work early in the morning and left me a couple of the large Hershey's kisses on the coffee table. When I got up, I noticed little bits of aluminum foil on the carpet and wondered where it came from. It was only after talking with her that I found out what happened. Needless to say, her turds reflected brightly in the sun for a day or two.

On Niki's last night, we got her a little pizza that was just for her, as that was her second favorite food. Her first favorite was McDonald's cheesburgers. When I would take garbage to the dump, Niki would always ride with me in the cab. I got in the habit of going to McDonalds after the dump and I would share whatever I got with her. Soon, this was not enough so I started getting a Happy Meal just for her. Then I started noticing pickles on the floorboard after we came home. Needless to say, I started ordering her Happy Meal with no pickles. It got to the point where every time we just drove by a McDonalds, even in our car, she'd start drooling and if we passed it by, she'd start whining. Her last food was a Happy Meal with a chocolate kiss dessert.

"She was just amazing no matter what. She will be in my heart, my mind, and my thoughts forever!"

Love never, ever dies.

My heart goes out to you and your family.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Please know that Kodiak will be happy, pain free with the rest of our beloved dogs that we have lost along the years at the rainbow bridge. I lost my Cooper a year ago in April-senior rescue male pom who although I only had for a year, was the best year of his life and we gave him everything possible to help him with his medical problems until the end. ((((((hugs))))) You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Leigha

Thank you everyone. I have been serching for the last "good" pictures I took of her. I have been looking on my photo storage places. Maybe I will find them today.

It is also nice to know there are others out there that understand the pain and heart ache. Not to many people in my area understand it. So thank you all again.

I'm so sorry to hear about you and your families loss. It sounds like she had a full life and made an impact on everyone. Thats the toughest thing to decide. When quality of life is not there anymore.
