Shadow....

New addition to rainbow bridge A little background info, Shadow was an 11 year old Rottie, my cousin's dog. My cousin was 10 years older than me, as is my sister, and his sister was about my age. I spent a lot of time at my aunt's house, so we all kinda grew up together until I hit my early teens. Then my sister went away to collage, and my cousin Brian went into the military. Brian had developed severe depression and had returned home to live with my aunt and uncle for the last 10 years. Shadow was his constant companion.

Last year Brian was killed in a car accident. Shadow had stayed home with my aunt and uncle, but never acted the same. He moped around the house and just did his best to keep the two of them in sight.

About two week ago, he started acting very listless so my aunt took him to the vet. Heart issues, he wasn't given long to live. He was set up with a nice fluffy bed in the kitchen and was given the best of meals everyday and didn't really move from there after a while. He tried to get up about a week ago to go to the door ask to go out, but collapsed at the door. My aunt didn't care if he pottied in the house at that point, she just took care of him and cleaned him up. He was what she had left of Brian.

A few days ago, Shadow struggled to his feet and walked into the bedroom where my Uncle was napping, after getting a scratch on the head from him he came back in to the kitchen and leaned on my aunt and got a scratching from her. Then he went to his bed and collapsed for the final time and it was over.

Sorry about the novel and the sad story, just wanted to share....

It's strange how dogs seem to know when its their time, the first dog we had has a couple was a collie cross, on his last day he hung on to life till i got home from work and he died in my arms

Ths is a very sweet but sad story. I'm glad you decided to share this with the forum. When its the time for them to move on, I would prefer for them to decide its the time, and not my decision. It really goes to show you they are aware of what is going on....My first dog I owned after leaving home, a rescue, lasted 10 years, He was 13 when I had to make the difficult choice because the quality of his life was not there anymore. That was a very hard decision. BY passing away at home is probably the best way for them to move on comfortably, with their family around.....Thanks for sharing.

Yeah it was very sad. I was only around Shadow a little bit because they live a ways away, it was hard to get out to visit. But he was a friendly big bear of a dog when I was there. But I really feel for them, they had so many family issues going on in the span of a year, it was a hard hit for my aunt and uncle to take with Shadow passing.
