Puppy names, please help!

Ok, so I'm adding a red male to my family early next year. I've found a wonderful breeder thanks to a DT member! The litter is expected in mid-november, so I have a while to think about this, but I need help picking out a name! I am hoping to get a red boy. My significant other (Justin) and I had agreed on Toby, who happens to be our favorite youtube personality. However, Justin didn't realize how common Toby was as a dog name and wanted something more original and creative. To give you an idea, we have a big male cat named Jables after the comedian Jack Black, and a stripey girl cat named Samus after a character on a video game that Justin used to play. We thought about Link, from the Legend of Zelda, but I'm not entirely sold on it... had we named our girl cat Zelda (like I wanted) then it would be a different story. Any suggestions on picking out names, for example where to find inspiration? Thanks a bunch!

We were Gona name our boy Troy. It's so masculine and strong I think it's perfect for a dobe. Unfortunately my husband Vito-ed It because he has a friend with a dog named troy but I still love it. We ended up with Kane which we love too. Other names we had on our list; chiaro, coby, creed, capone, Zeus ..

Baby name books are awesome for this too!

Our only child, born in the early 1980's...we named him Andrew.
- nothing to do with the prince from England...we just liked the name
- only name my wife & I agreed on, at 7 months term
His name, maybe common in some EYES...very special in OUR's:
- and he has always liked his name...translated, it reflects strength (& very true, if you ever met my son)

Toby is a great boy's name, 2 syllables and ends in a "e" sound...I like it.
^^^^ When I name my puppy....those are my rules...makes training easier.

------------Kelly & (Amy - RIP @ 11.7 y/o)

Does your breeder have the litter theme picked out yet? Often that can help get the creative juices flowing.

I didnt even think of that... I know one of my coworkers bred Great Danes and she had a patriotic theme for her puppies that were born the week of July 4th... that's a really good question! Is it customary to keep the names given by the breeder? I know the registered name is final, I had a quarter horse registered as "Brokers Money Clip" and I couldnt come up with a good name for him, so I just called him Broker... which was really ironic cuz that's exactly what he made my dad ; )

I always liked Ronin for a boy name. Its not common and it was an amazing Robert dinero movie! Though not knowing what was in that case drove me absolutely bonkers!!

Prime was named "Tico" by the breeder. I immediately changed his name to Optimus Prime! His litter theme is famous horse jumpers and his registered name is Idle Dice, but I was dead set on naming him Optimus Prime and didn't care if his call name didn't match his registered name.

Sometimes the breeder will pick a theme and let you choose the registered name. Your call name can be anything, it doesn't necessarily have to go with the registered name.

For example, my Remy came from a repeat breeding so the breeders theme was "Encore". She allowed me to choose her registered name, as long as it began with the breeder same "Sunking". So I chose "Sunking's second Time's a Charm". Obviously Remy has nothing to do with the registered name in this case, but if your stumped a theme may help get your brain thinking....

I like the name Remy because it's Gambit's real name Remy Lebeau.

Yes, I will be getting a Sho-Me puppy if things go according to plan : ) I am incredibly excited! Haven't put down a deposit yet but hope to fairly soon. Even if there aren't any red males in this litter, I'll wait. Good things come to those who wait after all If he is from his litter, his dad is King and his mom is Kenya... sounds like a Lion King theme to me... lol

Let's face it, we're probably all going to resort to "[email protected]" on occasion.

Why not try looking through either name books or encyclopedias of whatever it is that interests you? I'm sure there are books about video games, and there are lots of books about mythology.

I wound up going through three (count 'em, three) different baby name books to get Ilka's name. When I first rescued her, I just called her Blaze (because of her markings), but once we decided to keep her, I wanted something better, but couldn't think of anything. I really wanted either a Celtic or German name, but she wound up with a Hungarian name, instead.
