The reason I'm asking is because an online friend I was talking to on this forum is considering buying a puppy from a breeder stating that the puppy is 6 weeks old... he looks more like he's about 4 weeks or less to me... I know sometimes they are eating solid foods at 4 weeks... but i don't want him to get a puppy that is much too young to be away from his mother... and he looks much different than my guy at 6 weeks... tried doing a google search but seeing many different sizes... This puppy just looks WAY too young to be leaving his mother right now... but, maybe the one I got is just a big boy? Thanks!

4-weeks is too young for a puppy to leave their dam but so is 6-weeks.

Ideal age is 8-weeks old. It's even illegal in many states to sell pups under 8-weeks old.

thanks sam&macks mom... that definitely helps a lot.. that looks more like what i was thinking... this puppy he is looking at, that the "breeder" is saying is ready to go is MUCH smaller than those puppies... Just look like they're way too young to be weaned from the mother to me... BTW, your puppies are GORGEOUS!

I couldnt agree with you more... Mine is 6 weeks... but he's not ready to come home yet... I'm really excited, can hardly wait, but hes still too young to be away from his mother... unfortunately MANY (and I do mean A LOT) think 6 weeks is fine... I had a lot of breeders during my search for a puppy tell me they let them go at 6 weeks... Usually all of them gone at least by 7 weeks...
I don't even think this puppy my friend WAS considering is even 6 weeks though... Or maybe they're really unhealthy... they look extremely small in comparison to the litter of puppies I just picked mine from- and from the pictures here... he's not considering buying the puppy anymore, though.

Only the fast buck artists, BYBs, and Puppy Millers want them gone at 6-7 weeks. The faster they are gone the sooner they have the $$$ in their pockets and they don't have to worry about things like ear cropping and such. Convenient for them, but NOT what is best for the puppy.

True... and too bad there aren't more laws/restrictions against those kinds of things.

I don't know about average. I just pulled the weight records on a litter of 9 I had in 2007 and the males weighed around 7+ lbs at 6 weeks. Then I pulled the weight records on a litter of 2 I had in 2002, and at 6 weeks both the male and the female both weighed just over 11 lbs.

Thanks! Those puppies did not look like they would be even close to 7 lbs to me... But, it was just pictures... I guess it's really hard to tell... Just looked way too young in the face... totally different from what I'm using to seeing in 6-7 week old puppies.

I saw a Dobe puppy at the vet yesterday that was 11 weeks, and she was smaller than Elke was when she was 8 weeks. Very dainty looking, I was surprised when the owner told me her age.

Elke was 14 lbs at 8 weeks.

thank you all very much for your info and pictures... (you all have beautiful puppies by the way) ...
I looked a little further on her website and according to the date she said they were born they should be just turning 5 weeks old. Hoping she is talking about another litter possibly. But he has changed his mind about purchasing a puppy from her after he checked into it more. They also do not have tails docked or dewclaws removed...

My puppy at 5 weeks seems to be a giant in front of these puppies in the post. Did I get ripped by the seller?

In most places it is illegal to sell a 5 week old puppy. I hope you don't have this puppy yet. Please start a new thread - this thread is 8 years old.
