Puppy vs Rescue - health, cat-friendliness, other concerns?

Hi all! I'm in the research and planning phase of adding a Doberman to my life as a companion/family dog, and have been debating whether it would be better to get a puppy or to try to find a rescue based on my circumstances.

These are the main concerns I am weighing:

1. My household has cats, so I need to be sure that they will be safe with the dog around. With a puppy, it would be socialized with cats and trained to be gentle from the start. With a rescue or older dog, this is both trickier to find and less reliable, because I have no idea what "✅ Cats" means to whoever put up a particular adoption listing. I can ask for more info, of course, but it does give me pause.

2. Health. Because there are so many potential (and life-threatening) health issues with the breed, a puppy is appealing because I would be able to research the longevity and health of its pedigree when purchasing from a responsible breeder. This is a total blind spot for a rescue. Would a Doberman mix (much more common to see in any given rescue, in my experience) be less prone to breed-typical health problems? (This is probably a whole topic unto itself.)

In general, I'm very pro-rescue, and if I weren't worried about #1 and #2 it wouldn't even be a question of whether or not to go with a rescue. I love puppies and do have the time to care for one, but I don't want to get a puppy just for the sake of getting a puppy.

I'm just looking for other perspectives. Would you be concerned about adding an adult Dobie to a home with cats? Would you balk at adopting one whose genetic makeup was a total black box? Are there other aspects that stand out to you that I should consider when deciding which way to go?
