E-G , Me & ER

This was my view at 2:30 Saturday Morning

It all started out some what normal here Friday - I'm am cleaning out he bean bin and hauled 2 loads in to Bunge , It was 2 p.m. and it was getting hot and I was running out of gas - So I locked up and came home , EG had ate around 12 - I let her out for a business run , I laid down on Kadins bed and her by my side , after about 10 minutes I told her I needed to go get cleaned up , she hopped off the bed and threw up part of her lunch , I thought what's that all about ? I tried to get it cleaned up before she ate it again which didn't work out so well .

I got cleaned up wife told me when I came in the living room that she had threw up again - I was really getting worried by now , she came out and got her a drink and she then acted just fine , played with her ball , everything . Well , maybe she had upset tummy .

It was now getting around 5:30 0r so , She was out here in the office with me and she threw up the water she had just drank ! It was now 7:30 , left her out , she threw up water 3 more times , Action time was now here , I called my Aunt Bug in Portland at 7:42 - We both thought this is close to a emergency , She then settled down - till around 9 , threw up again , Called Cindy - Like Bug and I had talked - could it be a blockage ? I thought No way it could and told Cindy , I just can't believe it could , she then told me about a client that had a puppy eat a sports bra ! I then knew it could not be a blockage - I don't have a sports bra

Cindy said , see if she will take some water and keep it down - So I did , we went to bed at 11:30 - 3 hours past our bed time ! I had her laying right next to me , then at 12:30 , she hopped up and threw up the water , I went in and got dressed - woke wife up and told her we were headed to the VCA in Fishers . I had the Tahoe already loaded up and ready , as I pulled out of the drive I was talking to the VCA and told them I will be there in a hour .

I was worried about 2 things - Blockage and dehydration . We pulled in at 1:40 , let them know we were there , Tech came out and did a parvo test - takes 10 minutes - she called at 2:20 - 40 minutes after telling me it would be 10 minutes - lol

Got a call from the Vet at 3 am . We went over everything and then her plan - X-rays to check for blockage first on the list , then if it was clean - then would give her a shot of anti nausea meds and fluids under the skin , We agreed on everything and she said it would take around 2 hours - I though crap ! that will be 5 am , we had got up at 5 am on Friday - I was running on fumes - so laid the seat back - grabbed my jacket for a pillow and some way -- I fell to sleep , Woke up at 4:40 and had only been up for a minute or so and the phone rang ! I was sick at my stomach - fear ! Thinking the worse !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I answered the Doc asked Ken ? Speaking -- GOOD NEWS she said ! NO Blockage - I was wanting to jump up and down and yell thank you Lord ! Doc said she had to eat something like a bug , a spider bite , something did not agree with her .

I will admit this trip rates at the top of tough things I have did - It was a year on Aug 9th I were last there with Ali - and Doc gave me the News that Ali was in her short rows - I remembered it so clear as I sat there wonder if I would get that same news on EG . Yes - I had a talk with the big guy asking not to take her yet - He had Kasia and Ali - give us some time with this little girl and yes I sat in the Tahoe and had a good cry , Not again !

It was a little before 5 am and got the call from the tech she was bring out EG - I told her to give me a second to open up the rear and for her just to put her in and lock the crate - I would stand back and clear for her and my safety ( Indy and Fisher area are HOT Spots ) Here they both came out - Tech had her on a slip lead and EG looked like a little show dog ! carrying herself so proud - head up , looking left then right along with Dober Gant - What a pretty site !

I pulled back in the drive at 6 am . Got girl out and wiped her all down several times and cleaned her paws , laid her down in bed and I was right behind her , LOL We got up at 8:30 , no sleeping in - I had to got to New Pal Vet to pick up a few cans of ID for her to mix with here kibble .

We all talk about socializing our new puppies - I never , ever , dreamed her first trip out , would be to a ER .

Sitting in a parking lot in the middle of the night - a person has lots of time to think - What did I miss ? Should I have got here sooner ? What could she have gotten into ? What , What ,What ? + a few Whys ?

Well it all worked out and so happy it did for a change , but it is driving the wife and I crazy and to what caused it - And something we most likely ever figure out .

Oh , One more thing - when she got up this morning , I thin she was trying to make up for a lost day of playing DoberShark !!!!!!!!!!! She on an a mission , lol

Everybody have a great Sunday and give your Dober a BIG hug

Happy that everything turned out fine! They sure can scare us at times though.

Jeez Kenny! You got me so worried that part way through your post I had to jump to the end to make sure everything was OK. It was great that you had knowledgable folks to reach out to.

I am so glad that all seems well. Things like this have always made me nervous ever since the time a rush visit to the vets had The Sheriff on the operating table in less than a half hour.

Best to you and yours

John

Whew!

That'll drive you to gray hair if you aren't already. My hair is practically white these days—something about dobermans does that.

I'm so glad to hear her spunk is back.

Good morning everybody ! Faln- OH yeah - We do to !

I knew yesterday when I wrote this thread - I would forget something and I sure did - it was part of my problem to make the decision to go or not .

On the morning of Friday - I only had half of what EG needed for her breakfast - no problem - opened up a " NEW " bag ( same food ) to finish it off , then at noon - it was total out of the new bag ! I never was sold it was a blockage , but it could have happened ! I thought food poisonings ! We had that happen one time ( got a spoiled bag ) many , many years ago . But she was not showing the same signs as we had seen before with food poisoning . I smelled the new bag - took out a few hand fulls looking for mold - smelled OK and looked OK . But she is a little puppy - and it would not take much to up-set her . I told the Doc about the new bag of food , she really did not think it was a player .

As I said , I was on the phone with Cindy ( Thank you ! ) After I filled her in on what was going on , She asked if she had a temperature ? I failed here ! I told her we did not have a thermometer ! , then asked me if I did a Capillary refill ? No I had not ! I then did it and it was instance = good news . Then she said to warm up some Organic Bone Broth - Again - we didn't have any ! She then said for us to give her some Pedialyte - Again - We had none ! I failed terrible !

Our Pedialyte was way out dated - we got rid of the thermometer we used on Ali AND never replaced it ! And the organic bone broth is to help coat the tummy and add hydration ! The only thing we had was the big type of syringe - one like you use on a horse - we had them to feed Ali in her last days and you have to be careful doing that - as NOT to asperate them , I learned this first hand - and there is a trick to it , or a sweet spot they will take it .

One last thing - after all the puppies we have raised here - we had never , ever , seen a puppy this sick at her tummy - never ! It was a real learning experience for us both . I will be honest - I was at a lose .

Now I do real I did some things right .

1. I had all phone numbers I needed loaded in the phone .

2. I had already been on the phone with Indy Vet in Beach Grove and the VCA to check on staff on hand and how long the wait time was - Both had been hammered with emergencies and after to expect a 2 hour wait time on arrival .

3. That the Tahoe loaded up and ready - I-pad , ALSO ! Don't forget to take chargers with you ! I had them loaded as well , Crate locked down , all paper work that would be needed on her .

4. Use the resources at hand - Aunt Bug and Cindy - you have them - you use them , Thank you 2 so , so much !

5. Now where you are going ! We had already been to both places .

6. And in this new time - Have your masks - gloves , ! Hand sanitizers too ! And wipes made for your dog ! I wiped her paws down 3 times and also her body - to get rid of any cooties !

7. Plain on sitting or sleeping in your truck for up-teen hours .

8. Payment plan ? credit cards work the best at this time - we always pay by check , but not this time - to lower any contact , as both Hospitals are in a Indy Hot spot .

9. take something to eat and drink ! LOL - I had plenty that I take in the tractor or combine

10. It best to have everything you need on hand - Not like us ! Be prepared for the worse and you most likely will never need them - don't have them , like us and you will !

A big thank you to all the well wishes E-G has received !

And one last thing -- Ken wasn't worth a hoot yesterday

Ken thank you for that important information. I have a dog thermometer would not think to use that along with the capillary test. Need to get bone broth.
