Picking Up Puppy

Good Afternoon All,
When we pick up our puppy next week from the breeder, what should we expect to receive as far as paperwork regarding the testing and immunizations?

Cmich , Just wondering what your protocol for picking up your new bundle will be ? Masks ? Having the breeder put the pup in a pin and walk away , then you go pick it up and leave ? Just curious how it will be handled

Thanks and Make sure YOU ! Post up puppy pictures

When I picked up my boston terrier a year ago, i received a breeder contract and all shots the puppy got and a schedule of future shots. It helped a lot! Good luck and let us know how it went! I pick my boy on June 6!

Both of my dogs arrived as puppies with HUGE binders. Their pedigree, a copy of their contract that I signed, EXTENSIVE health testing on both parents, instructions on what they were eating and tips for how to care for them, histories on their parents, copies of the vet care they'd already received....

Every breeder works a little differently.
However at the very bare bones minimum, you should expect to sign a sales agreement/contract (if you didn't already prior) and get one copy to keep and one copy for the breeder. Both copies should be signed by both parties.

The more diligent breeders, like MC's will also provide photocopies of health testing certificates and reports from both parents, photocopies of the registration papers and the pedigrees.
In Canada you do not typically get the reg papers of the puppy right away as the buyer will asked to be signed a non-breeding agreement form which has to be completed at time of purchase/pickup and which the breeder then sends to the CKC and eventually will forward the reg papers. Some breeders will also have it stated in their contract that they will hang on to the reg papers until they get proof the pup has been spayed/neutered.
The transfer of ownership, registration, associated costs etc. is all the breeder's responsibility in CKC.
My understanding is that with AKC the breeder is not obligated to complete that form, and the breeder should be providing it to the new owner if they aren't doing it themselves.

Personally per my contract I will always provide my puppy owners with:
- signed contract
- copies of the parents health test results and certificates
- copies of the parents titles
- copies of the parents pedigrees
- the puppy's individual health booklet with vaccination and deworming info along with proof and date of microchip implanting
- non-breeding agreement form

In addition to this I will also provide
- puppy care sheet
- Embark test results if they arrive on time (if not they will be forwarded by email)
- information on health insurance (all pups will be on a complimentary short term health insurance that the owners can choose to activate and pursue or not).
- Ian Dunbar's Before and After getting your puppy
- Sophia Yin's Perfect Puppy in 7 days
- a puppy package with a bag of food, toys, a leash, collar, a tug for training, blanket... maybe some clickers or anything else I can think of.

And that's what I can think of, off the top of my head.

Ken I wouldn't over think it really. Just bring YOUR mask and wear it and if they do not then no problem really. You will probably be outside for the exchange, just my guess. Take some hand sanitizer with you to have before you touch your steering wheel and be on your way. Don't shake hands obviously. Really just do what you have been doing when you go out. Unless the breeder is coughing or sneezing you really should be fine. Congratulations again.

Thank so much everyone! We have been to see the puppies and we all wore masks and stayed within 6 feet of each other. We are extremely careful 1) because my son has an immune deficiency and 2) because we live on Long Island in NY where numbers are astronomical! We aren’t nervous for pick up since our breeder has been practicing social distancing for as long as we have.

More nervous that I will forget something!

We've also learned over the last couple months how much safer it is to be outside than inside, so if you're practicing all the rest (masks, handwashing, no face touching) I wouldn't worry about getting inside the 6' range for 30 seconds. Good on you for taking care!

I would think you and the breeder would have already gone through all this, along with what testing has occurred on the sire and dam, what to feed the pup, simple training ideas, a contract that the breeder will take the pup back, no matter what age the dog is, etc, etc......... When you pick up the pup, don't get all excited and forget to ask questions. Write your questions down now, and have them in your hand to ask the breeder. Don't get distracted in all the excitement.
