Male or female puppy with small dogs

Hi there

I have two female Chinese cresteds and a neutered frenchie. We want to add a Doberman puppy into the mix! Would you suggest a male or female? Which is better with the smaller dogs? I have always found that males are easier with other breeds... we had a blood hound female who was very difficult? Please advise as to what you guys have experienced with small breeds and Dobermans being added x

Personal experience.....I had an intact male and he was raised with a neutered male Lhasa Apso and later with a neutered male Shih Tzu mix. NO problems. But from day one I enforced the rule of NO FIGHT-NO BITE. Once that rule is established it becomes just a matter of it's the way it is.

Amy, we have three Chinese Cresteds (love them!) one Staffordshire Bull Terrier and and three Dobermans. Two of the Dobermans belong to my daughter, but I care for them during the day so they are here.
I don't think it matters what sex is easier with the smaller dogs, it depends on the individual character of the Dobermans. Our males are generally easy going. But then, my female feels it her duty to ever protect and watch out for the Cresteds. If your females are not spayed, I would consider a female Dobe. I think it best if they grow up together, or you get a puppy. Your Cresteds and Frenchie will always be first in pecking order. With Dobermans you have to be careful of SSA (same sex aggression), but I have never seen that with my Cresteds, even with two whole males together and a bitch in season.
My daughters first Doberman, 10 yrs ago came into a house of Cresteds and a new one just the same age as he was. Both three months old they grew together and oh the trouble those two could brew.
Up camping or in the Mountains the Cresteds keep up with the big dogs, their energy limitless and prey drive strong so they worked together. I have some great pictures - somewhere.

Amy,

I have several friends who breed (or have bred) Crested's and Dobermans (and Boxers) and as far as I've ever been able to tell the Crested's more than hold their own with Dobe's, male of female neutered, spayed or intact.

The Crested may not be as big but I think they may be even tougher than the Dobes.

I don't know about Frenchies. But they've never seemed to very intent on instigating fights--I'd go for a male myself (but then I always do) too many female Dobes really lend new meaning to the term "bitch".

You're right on Bug, Crested are very tough dogs. They don't really belong in toy class. More hound like in independent attitude. They amaze me.

I'll say they don't belong in the toy group. They are perfectly fine (if small) sight hounds--but they aren't the first breed (and probably not the last) that the AKC got in the wrong group.

Finally found a pic. OP here are our two at about the same age - 'Rainie' and 'Duggan' her partner in crime. Second pic of Rainie just for fun so you can see what she looks like when not rough housing with the big guys.

Ahhh--those pictures are just way to cute in the case of the first one with Duggan and too handsome in the cast of the second.

The first one reminded me of a lady who had got a Doberman puppy from Michelle Santana--she had a cat and wanted to know how best to deal with the puppy and the cat as far as introductions and interactions went. Michelle gave her my e-mail address saying that she had no cats--just Dobe puppies and I had cats and Dobermans.

She wrote to me several times and all was going well with the introductions and then she sent me one describing a "moment" in the life of the Dobe and the cat which their owner said just cracked her up. They had been very quiet and she got to wondering what was going on--so she tiptoed out of the living room and around a corner to see if they were in the back hall. They were there--when she arrived she said they were wrapped around each other and jumped like little kids busted at playing "doctor".

Sounded a lot like your two looked in that picture.
