Cypress is 6-months old!

Cypress is officially 6-months old today and Dempsey turned 5 on Monday, so I tried to get some pics of them.

Its still nearly impossible to get pictures of them together - squirrels can be overwhelming for Dempsey and Cypress, well, she just likes to jump around a lot.

Cy finished her puppy class and earned her AKC STAR certification. She's signed up for nose work next while I wait on the spring session of foundation agility with our trainer, and for her to grow some more. And Dempsey and I are entered in our first obedience trial in December. He's my Novice A dog, so I'm a little nervous but mostly really excited. Whatever happens - it will be fun!

Anyway, a few pictures of my super cuddly, sweet, silly girl (she's starting to lose that little baby dog face ) and the world's best Rattie boy!

It's amazing how fast they grow; Cy almost looks ready to turn into a lady. And Dempsey looks like a tough guy in that last shot. Ratties are classic terrier personalities, aren't they?? He looks like he could be.

Mostly, he's a super cuddly, sweet, loving boy with big ears that work but...he definitely has his moments!

THAT'S why I thought of Sypha when I saw those pictures! I thought maybe it was because of their shared good looks. They look a little similar, dontcha think? Are they related?

Yes! Sypha is Cypress' half-aunt...?

If that's a thing...maybe just in dogs...not people though, right? hahaha

Cypress' mom is Cessna who is Sypha's half-sister through grandma Siri.

I thought I understood how they were related until I read that.

And of course you have to take all of the baby daddies into the equation too.

Thanks!

I started her with zip ties but she became an expert at popping them. So I switched her to backer rod posts. That was working well until they started rubbing the inside of the base of her ear. Then she started popping those, too.

So, just this week, I've switched her to zip tie half posts. So far so good, as she's totally unconcerned with them. I'll take them down tomorrow. If I don't like the shape, I might switch her back to backer rods for a bit and just use half posts to give her ears a break every so often.

Helo was popping the full posts out too. I may look into the half zip ties. It seems like the tips need more support than the backer rod gives. They are still floppy after they are down for a bit but he does have a long crop, so I know I’ll be posting for a while.

Yeah, it seems like the backer rod method gives really nice support for firming up the base but its not great for finishing off the tips. I think it might be due to the backer rod having a slight curve and maybe the tips don't set quite as well as when they're allowed to lay flat. So, I like to start with backer rode because it gives a good, supportive shape to the base of the ear, but then I try to move to something else to finish the tips. Although, you still get variable results with different ears, so...it always seems to change with the individual pup.

And I think breathe rights still allow too much wobble to really set the tips. But the zip tie half posts seem to be a nice balance between being sturdy and light. The ear tips are able to lay flat against the zip tie post and the post is light enough so as not to weigh down the top of the ear or risk weakening the base.

Also, I don't have to use a bridge with the zip tie half posts to keep her ears in position. When I've tried backer rod half posts, they've been just heavy enough on narrow show crops that I've had to use a bridge.

Here she is after 4-days in zip tie half posts. Her right ear is basically done, I think. It hasn't show any weakness for a couple months now. But I keep posting it since the other one still needs it.

Yeah, it seems like the backer rod method gives really nice support for firming up the base but its not great for finishing off the tips

Cindy showed me this when We picked up Mr. B - I use a craft stick to keep the backer straight and firm - I had to cut the stick to fit - rounding off any sharp edges then use tape to hold the backer to the stick - then put on a another round of tape - sticky side out to help it hold to the ear - Its been 4 years since I posted any ears and had to get out my supplies and make one - lol It will keep tips standing strong

I got these at Rural King - They are smaller than a popsicle stick and easy to use

Thanks, but I'd rather not use that type of support. I like the heavy duty zip ties; they still offer really nice support for tips without being completely inflexible like sticks.

When I do post with backer rods, I've been able to use duct tape to wrap them 2-3 times and that makes them rigid enough.
