No couch, no bed. He won’t be allowed upstairs at all because we have decided that is the cats safe zone!

Good morning! Catching up on posts and am so excited for you and Axel. We have cats, also (British Shorthair) and the downstairs is their safe zone. No dogs allowed anymore, even though the Cresteds
and Dobermans are fabulous with the cats, I just wanted a place for them, so no, I do not think you are cruel.

You are smart....to establish rules from the get go.......so much easier than trying to undo bad habits.
Another will be table food.........Hoss was never given any food while we were eating.......then we had some company over for dinner ......they did the bad deed .........slipped Hoss some food.......took quite some time to undo that...........outside Humans can be so bad sometimes!!!

Morning all--I've been up for awhile but have been doing morning stuff like feeding dogs, cleaning litter boxes, making bed etc--what's the time difference between Portland (left side Portland) and Utah--one hour?--mmm--I was up just before 6:00 am--someone else has to figure out who gets up earliest.

This house is a typical 50/s to 70's small ranch--one floor. My cats can be on furniture, beds chairs (not really allowed but are always there anyway--kitchen table and kitchen counters--and one of the boys likes the kitchen sink if it's really hot out). No dogs allowed any of these places.

Also there is the fact that for years, at least, the senior cat (this one is 16 years old) teaches each puppy about the rule of cat vs dog. I keep front nails clipped on all the cats (to protect furniture) and I've seen a cat who has been messed with by a rude puppy who doesn't have the house rules firmly in mind take care of the puppy for all times--cat whacks the puppy on his nosey muzzle one of those single paw slaps where the puppy gets a claws out multiple slaps in a nanosecond. The clipped front claws also protect the puppy for everlasting claw marks.

That treatment usually ends with the cat stalking off clearly offended and the puppy sitting on his fat bottom looking both amazed and chagrined.

My cats don't run (unless they've invited the dog to a game of chase the cat) and trying to chase a cat who is very likely to turn and smack you on your nose isn't much fun when they won't run.

These older ranches don't have easily segregated spaces--the cats generally get their litter box in the laundry room--gated with a baby gate--which either has a small opening only big enough for a cat to go through or is low enough for the cat to easily jump and that stays in place until the new dog has the no enter rule for that room firmly in mind--seems to take about a year--litter boxes are definitely self gratifying objects for dogs.

Sound like you've already got your house rule well set...

Let's see--it was 8 days on the 19th--so its down to 5 days now? What fun, a new puppy in the house.

Nope no table food either! Axels calorie intake will be kept a sharp eye on to maintain his health.....if there is any begging or naughty guests he will be crated for human meal times......I would rather he, and the naughty guests, just behaved as asked tbh! Lol!
I am fairly intolerant to humans who think they can do what the hell they want in my house so I actually may crate them instead *grin*

I figure no point feeding him raw if he is just going to get titbits and leftovers?!?!

Dobebug.....I’m with you all the way clearly....

Gap on the left is tried and tested just big enough for Marley to get through! Litter tray is in the downstairs toilet which will be out of bounds for Axel. Marley will be fed in there also.

It is 8 days today......although I do wish it was only 5!!!

Not to say the Dobermans don't get to play and interact with the cats, but just that coming into their downstairs domain has to be by invitation only.
This was taken yesterday. Six week old kittens being very bold in meeting the big guys.

L - This is just me thinking out loud here - But you might want to put something up in front of that big window - So that Axel can pick it up - Don't want to see him run full steam head on in to it . I have seen that done before - not ours . I did put up a small fence to replant some grass one time - Let Kadin out one night - dark and he forgot it was there and ran into it full bore - He didn't get hurt = but such did scare us .

Like it!- "Axel's Garden and House Extension" (The Doberman Wing?)

Good plan- Crate Axel at dinner or train him to sit on his place or just outside dining area (my BIL does this with his Great Danes).

This is important when Axel gets to full size because, remember.....

1. Dobes Are Natural Mooches (Especially Males)

2. Full Grown Dobe Heads Fit Perfectly Atop Euro Dining Tables
(Danish Table in Pic)

I have been trying to convince DW to get a Counter High (latest US fad) Dining table to prevent easy Dobe access...

OMG ...I was lied to.........that frig is just fine.

Now here my next question........my dentist told me people in the UK never get their teeth cleaned by dentists because they drink tea all the time.
She also said people in the UK think Americans are foolish for getting their teeth cleaned because we will just get our teeth stained again with our coffee.........

Your teeth do not look stained from tea.......they are quite white actually............so .......do you get yearly teeth cleaning or was I lied to again ???

Lol! My teeth are cleaned once a year when I visit the dentist......I also had braces as a teenager and whiten my teeth using Crest Whitestrips which I buy online from the US lolol!
I am just ruining everything you have been told!

Anything other myths I can try to dispel?
