Late intro: meet Ulrike!

As Meadowcat so kindly reminded me, I've turned up again mentioning another dog without doing you the service of an introduction!

Blu J's Ulrike was born May 5 2018, so just a day shy of being a Star Wars puppy! We got her in July about a week after Elka passed. I'm thinking of maybe doing agility with her (and should really start with some non-jumping activities), and when I talked to her breeder on the phone the first time, Judy said "Oh, she'd be perfect for agility! She's a climber!" and well that was terrifying but also we really needed a puppy.

We mostly call her Rika (which I spell like that, and my husband spells Rike, for consistency's sake) and she's certainly been a challenge in some ways but also amazing in other ways. She came to us crate trained, which was a magical change. We went to puppy playtimes at Petco (which didn't exist when Elka was a puppy) and has a puppy bff that we meet with once a week (Weather and health permitting) so that they can run around at our local "dog park" (i.e., hardly used fenced area at a vet's office). She is relentlessly energetic and very busy in a way that I don't remember from other puppyhood, but thanks to crating and our vigilance and a million toys, the only things she's destroyed were her own (and a couple of corners of cardboard boxes. Though of course not like, empty soda boxes that we would happily give her to tear up. She doesn't care about those at all)

She's very good at the pretzel dog technique (and watches the TV sometimes when we're watching things):

She's very comfortable just chilling out on her back, on the couch or in the crate:

and I'll share more pictures (And pictures of her as more of a baby) at some point, but I do have an Instagram that is mostly puppy pictures and some self promotion as a scifi and fantasy author (I'm an Associate member of the SFWA now!): AuthorizedMusings on Instagram (like, photobucket was never a GOOD service but at least it WAS free.....evidently no more. Shows how long it's been for me!)

It's nice to BE back, thank you everybody!

it's occurred to me that I might be able to link to pictures I tweeted.

we've used the clicker to shape getting into the HUGE Chewy box and then sit

The library closed for construction but the staff still worked! So we had a helper one day

And here is her bestest dog friend, Nova. Nova is an Aussie-Border Collie mix, and everything you imagine when you think of those two breeds meeting. Also, Rika is now bigger and faster than Nova (she was smaller when they first met!) but she holds herself back when they're playing chase because Nova gets ticked off and makes gremlin noises if she isn't running out front

(these pictures might end up huge and I'm sorry)

She is a little doll, though, and super smart and also VERY much into testing where the limits are. I started right away on her with the clicker, so every day we do several small training sessions to keep that little brain engaged (especially right now when she's in heat, because we're not having playdates/going on walks). She's got sit, and down, and "go to your bed" (that one she'll do to the French cue as well), a bow that doesn't have a vocal cue yet, spin, high five, and paw (but only her right paw so far).

Thank you! When she was smaller, there was definitely a time where I wondered if she was a little more than we could handle, but we've gotten a good routine with an okay amount of exercise (disrupted by this pesky uterus thing) and she's matured a bit and has more of a brain. We may have stopped a little early with her ears (her left one is a teensy bit wonky) but I'm very happy with them! I'm not sure how I'd describe her crop style, it's not a super long show crop, but it's longer than we were used to and suits her head well.

At least the outweighs the bag of food now! She's 60+ pounds (haven't weighed her lately) and about 24 1/2 inches (she doesn't realllly stay still to be measured). I know she's going to stop getting bigger soon and just work on filling out (her parents are within standard, unlike Elka's) but I'm not really sure when that's going to be exactly
