Doberman Allergic to tape

Hello i don’t really know where to post this but my 4 month old puppy is having bad allergic reactions to the tape we are using. At least the vet told us it was an allergy. We have tried several different tapes and i’m not sure what else to try. A little piece of his ear fell off and it’s really dry now. we have not been posting and have left his ears down for 3 days already. I’m a little stressed and feel like we are running out of time. The last time we posted it smelled really bad and the outside of his ear was covered in gooey yellow smelly stuff so was the inside tips but the actual ear canal doesn’t seem to have an infection PLEASE HELP!!!

Latex allergy in dogs, as in humans, is real. It is relatively uncommon, as in humans, but it can cause severe reactions.

Use a tape which is latex free.

They are around. For example: https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&ke...l_9954oou7xg_e

Some folks (and dogs) have a moderate reaction to latex. Yet it can be severe. If your vet has determined that this is a latex allergic problem you must deal with it.

Best to you and your pup.

I can't really comment on the allergic reaction part.....but if his ears are smelly and oozing goop, sounds like he has an infection now, too. Is he getting antibiotics?

And latex-free tape may do the trick for you....but his ears need to heal completely first.

Could you list the types of tape you've tried?

If you really need to find a hypoallergetic tape. You probably need a non latex type as several people have mentioned--latex allergies are not terribly common in dogs but you do see them occasionally.

Ask the pharmacist at a large pharmacy what they have in stock in hypoallergetic tape. Three M makes at least three of them. And they will be clearly label hypoallergetic and if they don't have latex adhesive they'll say that on the label somewhere too.

I really hate the hypoallergetic tapes because as far as I've ever found they are all paper backed and do not conform to cropped ear shapes nearly as well as the low tack, breathable latex adhesive tapes like Johnson & Johnson Zonas or Johnson & Johnson Sports Tape (used to be marketed as J & J Coach Athletic Tape.

Please tell us how you are posting and for how long--what you re describing really doesn't sound entirely like a an adhesive allergy.

We had this problem where one of our dogs had a bad reaction to many types of tape early in his cropping and posting. I wouldnt say it was an allergy but it caused fur loss , horrid smells and secondary infections. Your vet can scrub the head and ears with powerful antibacterial wash. We then had him in a cone until the tissue healed. This delayed the posting and made it more difficult. We did some padding under the tape in spots and carried the sticking points. It was alot of extra work and took longer, but his ears are perfect and his sensitivity to tapes are either gone or undetectable now. Mostly treat secondary infections as they arise, keep any more ear necrosis from occurring. Posting may be delayed and prolonged. Just concentrate on his health. You'll love him no matter how his ears turn out 🙂

I have a puppy currently that is sensitive to tape, even Zonus, which is what I generally use. I have switched to 3M Medipore Hypoallergenic cloth tape and it is working very well. Nice and sticky, holds well and no issues thus far with sensitivity. https://www.amazon.com/3M-Medipore-C...=medipore+tape

I forgot about that one--I was posting for some people who had purchased an entire box of the Medipore tape--so I used it--I don't like the very sticky tapes but at least it was cloth and worked far better than the paper backed 3M tapes. I powdered that puppy's ears when posting which took care of the stickieness.

This is just an FYI--you don't need incredibly sticky tape to work well when posting--it is actually more a matter of HOW you are using the tape than how sticky it is.

Thanks for the reminder about the Micropore tape Shelian Dobe.

I also powder the ears regardless of the tape I use, just dip an old makeup brush in gold bond and brush on outside of ear. What I like most about this tape, is you just have to dab it with of baby oil, alcohol, or adhesive remover and it just kind of falls off. What I don't like about it, is that is isn't as sturdy as say Zonas.

YW dobebug, I keep it on hand because I do occasionally have one that is bothered by the Zonas.
