Puppy - Crate size for airline

Can anyone tell me if a medium Sky Kennel (dimensions 28 x 20.5 x 21.5 inches) would be adequate for airline transport of a 10 week old puppy? The next size up is intermediate (32 x 22.5 x 24 inches). Intermediate seems like it would be overkill to me, but it's been a hot minute since I've handled a small puppy, so I may be under-estimating their size.

Is the puppy a Doberman? If so, the intermediate.

Yes doberman puppy. Sorry, should have specified that in the original post. I was hoping to get away with the medium since it will mean far less airfare. But need to make sure that she is comfortable for the trip too. I have heard that GSD breeders are able to ship with the medium size but don't know how a GSD pup that age compares to a doberman.

Yes, I know what you mean about $$$. We had 'Kiri' shipped from Pa. to Ut and I felt the #200 would be adequate and save money. I didn't want the crate so big she couldn't get leverage and maybe slip around and feel insecure. But, the breeder said it had to be the #300 and I went with it. So, glad I did.
Now I've got to know - where is your puppy coming from?

Thanks - I was able to call Chewy and get it changed to the larger one. You're right, I'd so much rather get one that's too large and KNOW she will make it here, than to get her to the airport, find out it's too small, and then have to start all over.

"Kiri" is cute! Ours will be Kira or Keira, haven't decided on a spelling yet.

She is coming to us from Michigan. We can't wait!

We got ours from Chewy, also! Had it shipped directly to the breeder.
Will this be your 3rd Doberman? If so, I am very envious.
Mi to Co will be a shorter flight than Pa to Ut, I am sure.
Joan (Cha-rish) drove to N.J. so it would be a direct flight.

Yes that's what I did, too! I sent it directly to her along with the little airline kit that comes with the zip ties and metal fasteners and all that. We are aiming for a direct flight as well. I'll start calling the airlines once I'm officially home from work for the holidays and have a lot of time to sit down and do it.

This will be our fourth doberman- crazy! We've had two rescues who have passed on. We have our girl Sadie who we got as a puppy who is now 10 years old. I wanted to have a new one in the house while we still have Sadie. I don't want to be without one. I am so excited. It has been so long since I've had a puppy!

How long ago did you have yours flown to you? What airline did you use?

What's funny is the medium size crate was like $46. The Intermediate was $75. And the Large was $60. Hahaha.

It will be two years this coming April that we shipped her.
We used Delta. SLC is the second largest hub for Delta so most places you can ship directly. I have never shipped or recieved a pet that had to change planes. Too chancy.
I am happy and excited for you. What color is she?

Yeah we are making the (short) drive to Denver in hopes of getting her on a direct flight to there.

She is black and rust. We actually don't know which exact girl is ours yet. They're 6 weeks old now and have yet to be graded. But we do know we are getting a black and rust from this litter.

Be sure to check with the airline she will be shipped on--those regulations change frequently and some require crate size computed by weight and others do it by height of dog.

Personally I've always felt that the airlines required crate sizes so big that a rough flight can end up with a dog banging around in a crate--but I'm not the one who regulates crate size vs dog size for the airlines.

I thought the same thing! I called United yesterday and they weren't very helpful. The representatives just ask for the weight and go strictly off of that. They do not consider the height of the dog and the requirement about the top of the crate being a certain distance above the ear. They also have other requirements such as metal fasteners and zip ties. If I remember correctly, those requirements are buried in some checklist and not openly listed on their site. Thankfully I am well-versed in the requirements after just having had my mom's dog flown to me earlier this year.
