I take my puppy Jax (Ajax) to work in the mornings. Today I took him out in the hall to meet the guards and several other office folk. He met the baliffs and the judge too. Plus my friends had a great time with him. That is all fine but the comments were like this: "He isn't full blooded (love the full blooded) cuz his nose isn't pointy" (HUH? I thought the ears would get comments but no his nose isn't pointy WTF. ). "Oh I knew a doberman type once but he was one of the tiny ones you know, about so big" (obviously a min pin description). "He can't be a doberman, they are really thick and well built, he is thin and has nobby knees" (Jax is 10 weeks old for God's sake). I'm serious these are actual comments that were made to me today. It doesn't seem to matter how educated people are (these are educated people okay) they still know nothing about dogs. The most surprising was "I thought dobermans were red" That one shocked me, the person has known one dobe, it was a red so there you go. Come on how about TV, how about movies, Magum PI???? Do they live in a vacuum. One comment on the ears, "oh he doesn't have the mean looking ears." Hahahahahahaha.

Maybe it is just me, I know dog breeds, I live and breathe dogs so to not recognize a dog for what it is, shocking. My neighor behind me (love these neighbors) says, "oh you got a doberman puppy, nice looking boy, when can we meet him, they are great dogs." WHEW at least someone knows their dogs but here at work, people are just clueless. I was thinking I quiz my hubby on breeds, he is pretty good now. LOL. My sons yup they know all the breeds too. I just thought people knew dobermans for goodness sake. Whatever...*rolling my eyes* At least Jax is a hit, big time, people were taking him all over the place, saying "my turn, come on let me walk him, let me hold him" I didn't even have to take him out to potty, two of my friends did that. Great for socialization and of course safe cuz we are out and about but not around other dogs. He is passed out in the crate now. Very tiring morning.

get used to it...

I am surprised about the red comment too, we get comments everywhere we go about Lexx's colour. Normally oooOoooh what a nice colour! I thought that they were black?

people just aren't educated beyond their own personal experience... and with dobermans, thats normally from the media, and not a positive thing.

You have only touched the tip of the iceberg. I know there is alot of things I don't know... and with me, if I don't have an immediate interest in something... I don't really care about it. If I do however find something interesting I will research it to the end of time. I just make sure I keep my comments to myself if it comes to things I know nothing about. (at least then people don't think I'm an idiot! hahahaha) Some people unfortunately don't have that trait - they comment on everything!

At least you don't get called cruel taking your pup places for the ears cropped. Or comments such as "What color is that?" (This is Mysti I'm talking about/Nox when he was little) I got told a million times that cropping ears probably hurts, and what not. Its so annoying to hear it over and over. But I got one comment on how it was good to take my dobe out into the public, and thanks for letting me pet him. lol You'll get tons of comments. Oh ya... I got asked if Mysti was a Miniature Pinscher........ :lame: A Miniature Pinscher doesn't stand over 13" I don't think... And doesn't have a long snout. It will get better as Ajax grows up. :) But people are still stupid.

Or - he can't be full Doberman, because his ears aren't standing up - he must be part lab or wee-mer-iner. (They'd probably say Visla, since Willie's red, except they never heard of it) Or with Rocky - maybe he's part coonhound or Rockwyler.

Or - "Are they all this gentle?" or "He's so big, ...so small, ...so smooth,...so ..........

The most common comment I hear is regarding the red color. A few people ask if he is pure-bred, but most people know he's a Doberman but have never seen a red one before.

I was informed last fall at a park I go walking at that I had a "rare chocolate doverman". I just smiled and nodded.
I also was asked if I had a "special kind" of Doberman because Reggie is "thick" and apparently they "don't usually come like that". Like I unwrapped him out of a package and got a different kind. Hmm

Sorry, but I do have to have my little rant here.

Every other country, not only accepts but demands natural dobes. (England, Sweden, Italy and Australia).

ignorant people haven't a clue. Lori, I thought you may get a little slack for this, but not to the point of ignorance.

I still have the time frame to get him cropped, but really, I know how you feel about it....fight for it. Your pup is perfect the way he is.

I really dont know what to say but ...wankers...comes to mind.

please keep ajax's ears.

hmmm, Monique - I didn't get that sense from this thread - seemed more like what was being said is just that people have the most convoluted and misinformed notions about what a Dobe is supposed to look like, act like, come across as... and that almost every one of the bits of feedback from "outsiders" is not only wrong, but almost comical in its distortion.

I will say that had I been the one to come into contact with an Akita owner while walking my Dobe puppy, I would have crossed the street, or asked the person to please keep a tight hold on their dog. Have known too many badly bred, badly raised Akitas, including one who chewed the face off a 5 year old girl back in the town we lived in in New York - a little girl he knew well. There are certain breeds I will never trust, and they aren't the regular suspects. lois

Ugh! Why do misinformed/uninformed people insist on going out of their way to talk about your dog?? I have a pretty good withering stare, but it's getting a major workout from people commenting on Liesei's cropped ears. I tried being nice and explanatory at first, "Yes, it's partially cosmetic, but it also helps their hearing and I want her to be a working dog; No, it didn't hurt her, she was put under; etc." Now, I'm over it. Do I walk around telling people the choices they makes in their lives, with their kids for example, are inhumane? Asking if they plan on circumsizing their child (which has less of a purpose, but frankly, is none of my business!!)

Sorry. Sore spot.

We took Molly out for a walk at the weekend to a park where we normally go. A lady with a Boxer came up to us and couldn't get enough of Molly lovin, letting her lick her face and generally having big cuddles, saying things like "OMG shes soooo cute, I love her shes gorgeous, I'd like one of these, What is she?" So we told her she was a Doberman.

As soon as she found out Molly was a doberman she PUSHED HER AWAY and said "I hate dobermans, they're vicious"

My dad piped up, well all dogs that are mistreated can be vicous but I don't tar your dog with that brush because I can see he's well behaved, and neither should you with Molly.

STUPID WOMAN! Makes me so god damn mad!!!! GRRR

Wow that would highly piss me off too!! I think anytime of prejuduce is ignorant, Saying u hate Dobermans because of the BS streotype is like saying you hate people for their color, or You hate people because some men rape women.. One individual wether it is a dog or a Human is different... As Jeff Foxworthy would say to her " here is your sign"

#23 ·
Exactly! It was just the way she pushed my poor baby away, who had done NOTHING wrong.

We asked the woman if she had had a bad experiance with a Doberman and if this was why she felt that way, and she said no. She also mentioned that she only gave Molly a cuddle was because she didn't 'look like a dobe' meaning shes Brown and not Black.

People are extremley stupid lol, When we bring Koko are natrual ear female girl to the dog park, people think she is a hound lol. Then you tell them,"no she is a doberman", and you get the best line ever. Ohh is she agressive? lol people seem to still amaze me. All the silly myths about this great breed.

Yes, people are STUPID!!! I work for a Humane Society and I get all kinds of comments about how cruel I am for torturing Tango by cropping his ears and tail.... How can I keep him intact, why did I buy a purebred ect. ect. ect. No one takes into consideration that he is the first non rescue I have ever had. I wonder if Tango Knows he's a poor tortured pup?

I am sure u do torture him.. by giving him lots of love and attention.. They are knocked out for the crop.. I saw the docking on youtube and felt bad but i dont guess its any worse then someone getting their baby boys(human lol) circumsized... unless the put babies under too but i dont know so I may be wrong

It's not important what people say or think. Never take comments seriously, your socializing your pup and thats whats important.

Oh I don't take their comments seriously. I was just amazed at the ignorance really. I think bringing him to work in the mornings is the VERY best thing in the world. He is being socialized while also learning to be civilized! LOL. He is here today and comes everyday. In the afternoon he is dropped off at home in his large pen to learn to be alone too. I can't wait for the weather to get nice so I can take him to the lake and the forest at lunch.
