Zen (like Bella) is fascinated with the parrots and the parrots return the sentiment. Yesterday LuLu kept hanging out on low branches - she and Zen were studying each other!

OMG MA I SEEZ A BIRD I CAN HAS, I CAN HAS, IZ MINE?!

ROFLMAO!!! Actually today we had a parrot/dog training "event" and I was surprised that the Dobermans cooperated so well. My other Amazon parrot named Montie flew down to the ground at my feet and both Dobermans were there in a split second. I yelled "OFF" as they came screeching to a halt throwing up dirt - literally. Then I cued "SIT" and both Bella and Zen obeyed. I reached down to pick Montie up (she does not realize that she is not in CONTROL of the 2 dogs) and Zen broke - he jumped straight up in the air as I straightened up. Thank goodness he did not jump toward Montie. I gave the parrot a lecture on the dangers of ground landings but I don't think she believed me.

Montie deliberately "buzzes" the dogs sometimes just for her amusement. Amazons have very cocky personalities. She has landed on Bella's back before (luckily I was standing right there and Bella did not react). I was pretty proud of my Dobermans today - they followed cues in the midst of a huge distraction!

LOVE the photos of your amazon! Is she clipped? I am waaay too much a nervous nellie to let my parrot Otis outside even when he was clipped. (He's flighted now.) It took a lot of work to get my dogs (esp. Huntress Frankie) to not look at him with that intense stare. Now they just see him as a source of food! (He drops food all over the floor. You'd think that pea pods tasted like steak with F's reaction to them LOL LOL...)

My parrots are not clipped BUT I have done tons of training for their flighted recall outdoors - BTW, I don't recommend that you try to take a flighted bird outside unless you have had the opportunity to work with a freeflight trainer. I hope you will train Otis for strong recall indoors even if you never want to take him outside - you never know when an accident could happen and he's out the door. What kind of parrot is Otis?

Otis is a Maximillian Pionus. He's a hilarious little sweet clown. He's active and actually very chatty considering that pis aren't known to be talkers.

I went to a workshop one weekend about free flight but am not close to being there yet. Otis is pretty good on the recall - on the floor, around the corner, in a closet... :) He's a pretty good flier. Free flight is ideal in our minds, but it's definitely not easy and not for everyone. I am always flabbergasted at people that can have their flighted birds out side. It still gives me palpitations just to think about it...

I wish there was a club locally that had practices in a large warehouse or something... Good to practice recalls in an unfamiliar environment.

You can look on You Tube and search for 'Otis Pionus' and find some videos of him talking. I think he's pretty damn cute. :D

By the way, I'd love to see photos of your LC zon and hear what his personality is like. I am interested in that species.... But parrots are difficult to do them right. I'm not sure I want another though I've searched a lot about different species and have fantasized about many....
