I don't have an excuse to skip the runs in Denton, so I will probably be there.

Dallas Air Dogs in Midlothian, TX, hosted UKC Coursing Aptitude tests this weekend. Someone came home with a fistful of pretty orange ribbons, and a lovely green rosette. And it's probably not who you are thinking. As soon as I get her certificate, Leo will be formally known as CA Leontine Von Washateria.

Ilka Qd (barely) in the first run, wouldn't run at all in the second run, and I pulled her from both of today's runs. She's going to visit the vet for a check-up and blood work. My lure coursing fool of a dog didn't even want to run.

Leo was much happier winning her loot than wearing it.

And Flickr has changed! ARGH!!! Why do they have to do stuff like that to me? It took me long enough to figure out the old version.

Richter went lure coursing in Des Moines this weekend. He earned one leg towards the next title (CAA). Unfortunately, with the horrible heavy rain I decided to pull him from Sunday's run so we only ran once on Saturday. Disappointing, but I decided it was too risky for us on Sunday. We had a really good time, though, and got to see many friends!

Plus, pictures

Silly question...
Is this like any type of nose work where there is only one dog going at a time?
Looks like a lot of fun.

Yes, only one dog runs the course at a time, but there might be many dogs out and about, and most of them are going nuts if they've coursed before and know what's up. Richter, for example, is howling and moaning like a maniac when it's almost his turn.

Hanover, PA - June

Anyone going to the CAT in Hanover, PA, in June? I'm thinking I might make this Ivan's birthday present. Ivan probably wouldn't be a good candidate for any play dates, but it might be nice to hang out with some fellow Dobe owners.

Yes, Richter had almost no prey drive before coursing...now he's a maniac. Be warned Thanks - I didn't take the photos, of course, but thanks to Aryn (NoodleRubyAllie here on DT).

Leo did one run last year as a 15 month old puppy, and was like "Oh, okay, I can chase it? This is kind of fun.". This year, as a more mature (*snort, giggle*) 26 month old, she was like "IT'S A LURE!!!! LET ME AT IT!!!!!". I'd never heard her scream like that before. It's amazing some of the vocalizations some of the dogs make.

One word of advice is to make sure your dog's slip lead isn't too big. Leo was so frantic to get the lure that she managed to back out of the too large slip I was using. *Note to self, use the black slip on her, not the burgundy one.

Kaylee picked up CAX leg #15 in Wichita...

This past weekend she got #16 and #17. Sunday was 40 degrees, 20mph winds, with rain so heavy that it felt like hail.

Stark got a puppy straight run in as well. He's going to be a lure coursing machine when he's old enough!

It sure came as a shock to me to hear Leo screaming like that at our last lure coursing, since she hadn't been like that the first time. She also managed to back out of the slip I was using for her, and took off before I was ready to let her loose. Oops.

Interested in trying out coursing near Houston/Austin

I'm interested in bringing my girl to a coursing trial. Anybody know of events around Houston/Austin/SanAntonio this fall?

Thanks.

Question:

Can any dog earn a title in this sport? Or do you have to be CKC/AKC reg.?

The next events coming up are in the Magnolia area (just a bit northwest of Houston) on Jan 24/25, 2015.

For the AKC titles, dogs must either be AKC/PAL registered or registered through Canine Pet Partners. At all the events we have been to, you can register with CPP on site when you sign up for a CAT.

It looks like the CKC is considering an all-breed/mixed breed coursing event, but I can't tell if it's been implemented yet. CKC Seeks Feedback and Volunteers Re: New Chase Ability Program | CKC

Right now, the only two organizations I know of that are offering titles in for all breeds and mixes are the AKC and the UKC.

For AKC eligibility:
"Section 3. Eligibility to Enter. Coursing Ability Tests are open to all dogs at least 12 months of age that
are individually registered with the AKC, recorded in the Foundation Stock Service (FSS) program,
individually registered with a foreign or domestic registry organization whose pedigrees are acceptable for
AKC registration, dogs granted a Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) number, dogs with AKC Limited or
Conditional Registration, or dogs enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners program. Dogs with breed
disqualifications and monorchid/cryptorchid dogs are eligible to participate. Females in season may not
enter. A dog may enter only once per event. (An event is defined by an event number.)"

For UKC eligibility:
"VII. Entering a UKC Event. Dogs must be Permanently Registered, have a Limited Privilege number (performance events, companion events & Junior Showmanship), or have a valid Temporary Listing number."

The Limited Privilege number is now called a "Performance Listing Number". I do know that there are some UKC events in Canada, but I can't say if any of the UKC clubs there offer lure coursing.

OMG our boys can't even be near the course! They go crazy just looking at it. They LOVE it! When we take them into the area I have to hold them by their buckle collar. Because they walk on their hind leggs! LOL

The UKC has updated their Lure Coursing rules for 2015, and have added a new Coursing Aptitude title. http://res.ukcdogs.com/pdf/2015LureCoursingRules.pdf The CA is still 3 passes, and the CAX is still 12 passes, but they've added a Coursing Aptitude Supreme (CAS), which is an additional 15 passes (a total of 27 passes). For every additional 15 passes, they add a number (CAS2, CAS3, etc.).
