First off, he's need to be registered with whichever organization you want to compete in. I'm assuming you've already registered him with the AKC? If so, it's easy enough to register him with the UKC. United Kennel Club: Application For Single Registration

For either one, he has to be at least 12 months old to compete. However, if you can find a club within a decent distance of you, you can see if the offer "fun runs" or "puppy runs" for training (although a lot of dogs don't really need much encouragement) for dogs that are younger than 12 months. Then, once they are old enough, it's just a matter of finding events. Both the AKC and UKC list upcoming events on their websites.

With any luck, I'll be going to this one. Just depends on when I need to be in Georgia for a somewhat related, dreamsicle-colored reason.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try and go watch one of those days. I think this is something LeeLoo would enjoy.

Why watch? Participate!
We will be at this one. If all goes according to plan, my Koa will earn his CAX. Also, if all goes according to plan, Siri won't drag me down into the dirt again. LOL
I'm hoping they might allow puppy runs so Hottie can have a try. She will be 16 days shy of the one year old requirement to run at the time of the event so a puppy straight run would be a nice thing for her to try.

I'm tempted because I don't know when there will be another one close by. I can't really travel too far because of the horses, cows, and chickens. I have to be able to be home at night for chores and in the morning for chores. I would like to bring the chiweenier with too if they do small dog. He's small and old but I think he would love it too. I'll have to think about it. I don't like bringing them into situations I haven't analyzed first. I might come out on my own on Sat. to see what it's all about and bring them on Sunday if that's allowed. The ins and outs, protocol, procedures I'm not sure of. If you see a star struck blonde with a 6'2" guy without a dog that will be hubby and I. I'm getting excited to come watch.

Dog under 12" run 300 yards, and veteran dogs (over 7 years) can run 3/4 the length, so a veteran dog over 12" would run 400 yards, and a veteran dog under 12" would run 200 yards.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to measure him. He's 9 and has a fairly high prey drive. With our luck he'll be 12.25" tall and have to run the big course. DH and I figure it will go one of two ways, he'll take to it like a duck to water or he'll just roll over on to his back because he's confused.

I plan on being at the Magnolia one tomorrow. Hopefully they allow spectators. Hubby is staying home with the dogs to work on his honey do list. We may all come on Sunday though. I'm excited to check it out.

As long as you don't freeze various body parts off (supposed to warmer than today, I think) you'll have fun. Dobiwankenobi will be there with her crew. I'm broke and have out of shape dogs, so I won't.

Where do you buy your coursing collar, quick release collars? I bought a slip lead but it didn't give me much control when I held it like reins to make it quick release. She almost ducked her head out early on her second run. I saw a bunch of nice big D-ring collars with the lead through them. Mine was a rope style from Petco that gave me a rope burn periodically when she got excited.

She certainly looks like she was having fun. I love seeing a natural dog.

Colorful Collars makes lure slips. Colorful Collars Home

So does Fuzzy Wumpets. Home

Hogan Leather makes leather slip leads. Custom Leather Dog Collars ? Custom Leather Dog Leashes ? Custom Leather Dog Martingales ? Custom Leather Dog Leads ? Custom Leather Dog Harness | Hogan Custom Leather (I believe that's the slip that Dobiwan uses)

There's a few other places you can find them, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Yes. Mine are from Hogan Leather. Nylon is a no-go for me. Burns me bad!

We were there, AuraDobes was there...many many others. Just in our little group there were at least 11 Dobes.

My Koa earned his CAX and Siri ran legs 29-32 towards her CAX2. Sadly Hottie was 16 days shy of the age requirement and after multiple equipment failures there was no time for a puppy run.

I will say some of the club members were the rudest I've ever encountered. It would take a lot to make me enter an event with them again.

To be fair, a club member told me they expected no more than HALF the entries they received on each day. There were 135 just for the very first runs. So, hopefully in the future they'll consider an entry limit.

Thanks for the info Rosemary. That's exactly what I was looking for.

I'll start with the nylon and when we stick with it I'll be able to convince DH to let me kick it up to the next level on cost. Maybe a couple of rope burns that render me unable to cook or do dishes will get me a leather one sooner.

I learned my lesson and will sign up early next time. I'm glad I didn't run the first day and waited to run on Sunday for the first time. There were still a lot of people though.

Was the little girl that ran Orca in your group? At least I think she ran her, I know she was holding her at some point. LeeLoo loved her. LeeLoo was sleeping at my feet and got up to lay in front of her feet. She was also giving her lots of dober-kisses.

The only thing I forgot to bring with me was sunscreen. I am a lobster today.

You can't out stubborn me. I had a Shetland pony as a child.

Yes. Ashleigh had Orca.

You missed the Orca jail break on Saturday. She somehow backed out of her coursing slip, hit the field during the middle of a Shepherd's run and slammed into the Shepherd full speed. She did not brake. She did not swerve. It was brutal. Thankfully no one was hurt but Ashleigh was punished. We were all on Whippet Security the next day to make sure there was not another incident.

Ashleigh has quite a way with the dogs. Mine just love her.

I really want to try coursing with my Dobe and whippet! Does anyone know how to sign up for Sierra Slopes Ibizan Hound's CAT on 2/28 in Sloughhouse, CA? I found the event on InfoDog, but for some reason I can't figure out how to sign up.

Looks like they don't have a website.... Checking on the AKC Events Calendar, it says to contact the Event Secretary Ms. Janet Milam, at [email protected] for more information, so you need to email her, and ask for a premium list.
