Do you have a copy of the rules? If not, get one, and read it front to back. Make sure you know what all the signs used in your level look like, and how to properly perform them. If you still have a question, ask the judge during your walkthrough.

Remember to breathe. I know everyone says that, but seriously, it's important. If you start holding your breath, it makes things worse.

And have fun. Even if your dog does the most embarrassing thing possible (Ilka's both peed in the ring and jumped out of the ring, and Leo's tried to kiss the judge on the mouth), you still have the best dog out there, because they are yours.

Adara nice tip. Will keep an eye on what's around the exits.
Thanks Rosemary. I have the rulebook and have gone over it a few times. You are right Calla will try her best. It's me making mistakes. Should be fun and I'm sure we will learn a lot. Hoping to get it video

I would have liked to have seen a trial or attended a class. But everything seems to be far away. I've been watching videos and have been reading a few threads here. Figured we would just jump in and give it a try. Just hope we are not the first to go. Would like to watch a run or two

Calla and I got 3rd in novice 2. We did not Q in novice 1. She knocked a sign over in a call front. I had her sitting nice in front of me and couldn't remember if it was finish left or right. I took a guess lol and it was wrong. Overall good day out. Learned I need to work outside more. She was slightly distracted sometimes and I had to work to keep her focused when facing the crowd. Looking forward to our next trial

Vader earned legs 2 & 3 for his RAE - only 7 more to go! It was very hot and he wasn't loving the heat. Not sure when we will trial next - we kinda shut down here for the summer

Has anyone looked into Cyber Rally-O? Cyber Rally-O: Welcome! I'd heard about it, but hadn't looked it up before today. Wow. At the upper levels, they have some very difficult and interesting exercises. I'd say that this is definitely in Ilka's future, and likely Leo's, as well.

Vader earned leg #4 towards his RAE!

Zannah earned leg #1 towards her RN! In her very first attempt!

We only trialed on saturday - but will try for some more legs this weekend!

Hey everyone can I ask a few novice questions?

G. and I are taking our first beginners rally class (well we started last week). The instructor doesn't give much advice when it comes to training which is hard for me because I'm a very novice trainer except for sit, stay, down, shake, play dead... types of tricks.

I've been trying to work on the left turn by starting with backing, and then I move to pivoting. if she needs help I give her a little poke on the side but she's doing pretty well. I think.

She also doesn't really give much detail into the move and how to perfect it. If we are turning left is it ALWAYS a pivot? Then when turning right it's a pivot for us but not the dog is that correct?

A turn is not always a pivot, but a pivot is always a turn. In a pivot, the handler turns on the spot, and the dog adjust to the handler, actually moving backwards on a left pivot.

I wouldn't try backing up to get her to turn. (I'm having trouble visualizing that, honestly.) Backing up is actually pretty hard for a lot dogs, I think. I was ecstatic when Leo backed up two little bitty steps today. We were doing pivots to the left, and I just took a step back, and she followed me. I did the same thing to get her to take a sidestep, pivoted left, and then took a tiny step to my right, and she followed me.

This blog post Left Turns | Denise Fenzi talks about left turns. Some of it is hind-end awareness in the dog, and some of it is footwork from the handler.

Thank you so much for that link!

I've been trying to do 180 or 360 turns thinking that would help G. more but I think I like her 90 stop, 90 stop.

FDSA just finished up a really great class on teaching the foundations of heeling, which has involved pivots. Lots and lots of pivots. My girls and I have been doing pivots until we (I, at least) are dizzy, but I can see where it's starting to pay off.

This class Fenzi Dog Sports Academy - FE105: Get Focused! is coming up in the next session, and I'd recommend it to just about anyone.

Yes, GR, Fenzi is online classes. I also can really recommend them.

I also really, really like a book called Click Your Way to Rally Obedience, by Pamela Dennison. You can order it on Amazon and you'll have it before your next class It has a lot of diagrams and pictures and really explains, in great detail, all the maneuvers. It really helped me visualize everything, and I think the training advice is fantastic.

I just wanted to give a shout out to G! I am continuously impressed with her intelligence! Last week we got down the left turn, in only 2 weeks! And It was almost like she just knew right turn! I'm starting to wonder if she's a mind reader? I find it impressive because I'm working 7 days a week 12 hour days... so I'm only able to work with her for maybe 4 days a week tops! and then it's only for maybe 15-30min! I can't wait for my intense hours to be over! I can't imagine how stellar she'll be! I can only imagine how far she would be if she had an experienced trainer working with her instead of me! Sometimes I go to teach her something new and it's like she already knew how to do it or she guesses from my motion how to do it?

I'm sure you all have similar experiences? Do they start reading your body language better or something?

Anyways we are having so much fun with this class! I only wish the course was bigger!

Yes, they learn to read your body language. All I have to do now is remember that I can't obviously cue a left turn with my shoulder in the obedience ring....

I'm debating over how to use treats when we're doing rally. Do you use them even when they already know the move? Do you switch it up? Sometimes a treat, sometimes praise... I don't want her to think she's always going to get treats bc I won't be able to do that in a ring.

As they are learning, they get treats/rewards often. Eventually, you start phasing out the treats, and doing longer sequences before they get their treat/reward.

Just purchased this DVD "AKC Rally The Complete Guide - Second Edition" and think it is a good resource for practicing. I mentioned this in the "2015 Training List" but I starting training Baron in Rally again to work on his RAE. Main goal is to enter him at the DPCA National in Lancaster in the fall. Hopefully, we will get back in the ring late spring. I have found a good trainer in our new area but haven't been able to connect with a Rally class during the day and the weather has been so awful did not want to sign up for anything in the evening. Also, the Rally classes offered combined regular obedience so I would have had to do a few private classes. When we were working on his other Rally titles, we didn't do any Rally classes. Just worked on our own from my books and an older DVD so I thought we can do it this way again! I have all the signs and the new ones and we have a large garage now so when the weather does get a little warmer, I can set up some courses in there. Right now we are practicing in our lower level. Excited about getting back in the ring. And, of course all this depends upon his health!

I just found another place to compete via video. It's called Wag It Games, and they have several different types of sports/games, two of which you can submit videos for titling. "Shadow Skills" is what they call their rally, and "Dog Ball" is what they call their treiball.

Oopsie, almost forgot the link. http://www.wagitgames.com/home.html

I have a few questions if you don't mind. There are some matches coming up in May, do you think that's too early for us to compete if we started class in January? Also, what's the difference between Novice A & B? A means you've earned a title before right? And B is me because I've never competed? Lastly, There's a match on May 2nd that's All Breed competitive and a match May 16th for the Doberman's club that's just a fun class with a competitive class on the 17th. I would REALLY love to do the one on May 2nd but do you think it would be better to sit tight and do a fun match first to get experience under my belt? (I probably know the answer to this I just don't want to hear it) Thanks everyone for your help, some of your advice took us a long way very quickly!

Matches range from causal to formal. A fun match or show and go is relaxed and informal. You pay for "X" amount of ring time, and can do pretty much your own thing. A more formal match is run just like a trial, with ribbons and placements, the only difference being that they don't count towards titles. If it's a fun match, and you think ya'll are capable of doing everything, and not falling apart, I would at least try it.

Also, what's the difference between Novice A & B? A means you've earned a title before right? And B is me because I've never competed?
Actually, you have that backwards. A is for dogs and handlers who have never won a title. B is for people who have titled dogs and/or dogs with obedience titles. This is a handy tool to help determine which class you need to be if for AKC and UKC rally and obedience. https://showentries.info/tools/

Lastly, There's a match on May 2nd that's All Breed competitive and a match May 16th for the Doberman's club that's just a fun class with a competitive class on the 17th. Given the choice, I'd wait, and just do the fun match on the 16th. Doesn't mean you can't go see what it's like, though, especially if it's a formal match. I jumped into trialing waaaaayyy too soon with both Ilka and Leo. Ilka managed to get some titles, but she really hated showing. Leo went to one trial when she was about 18 months, and she fell completely apart.

Thanks Rosemary! How will I know if she likes it? She likes the class, I think. What makes competing different? I'm mostly afraid of the sensory overload.

You should be able to tell by her demeanor whether or not she's enjoying herself. If you don't have a copy of the book "On Talking Terms With Dogs; Calming Signals" by Turid Ruugas, I'd suggest you get a copy.

Trialing can involve a lot of stress. They are in a new place, with a bunch of other dogs and people they don't know. They are being asked to do things with some strange person following them around. The fact that YOU are probably nervous and keyed up also signals to them that "something" is different.

We've been working VERY hard and still have a ways to go but I thought I'd give an update and ask for input. I just started G. on a martingale which is what we will use in competition and I got the competition leash a few weeks ago. This video is round 2 of 3. 1st round I used some treats (working on eliminating them), 2nd round I used 2 or 3 (she gave me really good sits and deserved them) 3rd round zero treats (until after). I know I need to get faster, I know I need to get her attn. on me more (should have used more treats on round 1 I think) and I know I need to work on my hand placement but I'm getting better. Our fun match is May 16 and the real deal is May 17.
