Diego hits the deck when I say down, but I just looked right past it a kept walking! I went to the car and cried as he licked the tears off my face, but I had learned an important lesson and hopefully won't make that mistake again! Don't stress!

Also, don't be hard on your dog if you screw up. It isn't his fault it is YOURS. I HATE watching juniors! Some of them haven't learned this lesson and even with a score of 95 they will talk about how dumb their dog is or how badly the dog screwed up! I HATE hearing this. My trainer taught me if something goes wrong it is YOUR fault, not the dog!

HAVE FUN and GOOD LUCK!
I can tell you Ilka's first scored in Advanced with no trouble. They were Excused, Excused, Excused, and NQ. She ran around the ring like a maniac, and was trying to pick up and play with the signs. The best that could be said about her is that she stayed in the ring, and didn't soil it. After the three excusals, I gave up even thinking about a Q, and was just hoping to make it from point Start to Finish. We made it. Our score was in the 30's, but we made it.

If we had made a 95, I probably would have fainted from shock. Our highest ever score was 89 (her RE title leg), and I really think the judge was being generous.

Miranadobe, I see that congratulations are in order. A 391 out of 400 is very nice.

Rally is so much fun - way more fun than traditional Obedience. The best part is being able to talk to your dog, so don't be afraid to talk as much as you want.

I downloaded the signs off the AKC website and made flash cards with them (which is helpful in the Advanced and Excellent levels when there are some weird ones). I used the flashcards at shows after we got a copy of the course to refresh myself on the sign and any specifics about it.

I also made full-sized ones and set up courses in my driveway to practice on. Click on my signature photo for a link to our Youtube channel - there are some videos of Red and I practicing Rally, and also videos of actual shows too, which I annotated with the signs so you can tell what we are doing.

You'll want to make sure you and your dog can do the exercise on one sign before stringing a bunch together. Then work your way up to doing more and more together at a time. Practice off leash too, if you can, since you'll probably move through Novice really quick and get to Advanced when you have to be off leash.

I thought about going back for our RAE, but it just became more of a money sink at that point. We already have the RN, RA and RE so I didn't really feel like it was necessary to do the RAE - maybe if I had unlimited funds and time for shows, but sadly that's not the case!

Good luck, you will love it

I was going to do the same thing when I started Rally but ended up finding ones that were already lamenated on e-Bay for a good price. I loved Rally also but feel the same about the RAE. Its a lot of money to sink down for one title. Plus driving to the shows with gas the price that it is now. Although I have to say, I did like doing Open A. Baron loved all the exercises except the heeling. He hates heeling. If I were a better trainer and he was younger, I might have gone for his UD.

Going for an RAE is probably cheaper than going for a UDX. Too many things to NQ on in Open and Utility. You have to be as bad as Ilka and I to NQ in Rally.

Same! We started training for our CDX but Red hates heeling too. He was fine for the dumbbell, retrieve over jump, drop on recall, etc - but that damn heeling... He would totally zone out and just stand there when we stopped, like he forgot he was supposed to sit automatically.

He just wasn't enjoying it anymore and seemed stressed out in the ring during heeling, ears and tail down, like he was terrified of doing something wrong. Which is weird because its not like I ever scolded him in the ring or anything. So I let him off the hook and was just proud that we got our CD since I was a Novice A handler.

Sigh... despite showing Ilka a dozen or more times in Novice obedience, I am still eligible for Novice A with Leontine. We never did get our last leg. Even the RA and RE were hard work for us. I think it took us something like eight times in the ring to get our RA, and five times in the ring for our RE. I thought about going for an RAE with Ilka, but she is getting more reactive to people (kids especially) and has always been dog reactive. I decided it wasn't worth the risk of her being involved in an "incident".

Thank you!

I looked at myself in the mirror the night before Nationals, wearing our Nationals sweatshirt, and grinned with excitement. Then ran over to my dog to hug and thank her for being such an awesome dog! NONE of that whole experience of being at Nationals would have been possible if she hadn't been the kind of dog she is.

She was sort of "over it" by the fourth ring, but she is so reliable and consistent that I knew what to expect could unravel. I just wanted to make sure I didn't screw her up! In the last run, even when she forged ahead at a station (2pt for each out of position) and flubbed a stationary call front (which is typically the first thing to go when she is "done") it was still good enough for a 97.

I liked what someone else mentioned earlier. DO NOT get mad at your dog. If you trained and something went wrong, well, that's the pressure of competition vs training and stuff happens. If you didn't train enough and something went wrong, well, that's your fault, not the dog's. People who compete before the dog is ready and then get mad at the dog just make me feel sooo badly for the dog.

Okay, a bored mind is a terrible thing to use. I was surfing the web, and found the AKC event statistics for 2012. Um... well, Dobes don't seem to be doing a whole lot in rally, overall. Miranadobe and Gracie are obviously exempt from that statement. Anyway, there were 143 RNs, 61 RAs, 42 REs, 10 RAEs, and 4 RAE2s. GSD had 251 RNs, 130 RAs, 26 REs, 26 RAEs, 1 RAE2, and three other RAE+ titles. All Americans had 397 RNs, 164 RAs, 94 REs (yay, Ilka! ), 13 RAE, and 1 RAE2.

Funny you should say that - I had a surprising number of people from across the country approach me while in Oklahoma saying "you just never see Dobes out in obedience anymore." In fact, if memory serves, there literally was only one Dobe in the Obed competition there, and just 3-4 of us in Rally. I hope that by being out there it encourages others to try. I *loved* having her in the line-up of top 4.

Around here I only see a handful of Dobes - and I can often name them all when I see them at shows. There should be so many new faces that naming them all isn't possible! Dobes are naturals in obedience and Rally!

In all the Rally and Obedience competition I entered with Baron, there were only a few Dobermans here and there except for the ones run by a Doberman club. In fact, when Baron got his final leg in Novice A with a 1st place, the judge came over to me and said he was so glad to see a Doberman out there competing. He said it was refreshing to see a Doberman win and not the same old ones; i.e., Goldens, Labs, etc. It was a nice statement.

think about it. most breeders don't care about working abilities when they breed a dog. who cares about drive, biddability, tenacity, etc when you are hoping to get darker rust?

LOL everyday I work whether it be tracking, obedience, or bitework, I know I am always sitting there going man..... I wish his rust were darker, or wow wouldn't it be great if his ears were cropped different and his croup wasn't so round?

And by "always" I mean never.....

Elsie got her RN this weekend!
Her scores were 96/100 (about a year ago we got that leg), 96/100 and 100/100! All 3 were first place scores too, and to top it off she won top rally dog in the weekend

Just thought I'd bump this thread up, seeing as how it's been a while since anyone's posted.

How is everyone doing? I know that Leo and I have a loooong way to go before we are ready to trial.

Envy and I are in our first trial Thursday. This is the first time I've "said it out loud" and I'm already having nightmares I've been watching RN videos like crazy. I have the world's worst performance anxiety. At class last week in a walk through Envy fell apart. Actually I DID. I walked like we were in the park...the good news was once I put my hands in the right spots she did it fine. But will I REMEMBER that? UGH.

Good luck Adara! Do some creative visualization of a successful run before you compete. And have lots of fun!!

Envy RN Leg #1 and first place score of 92. We had a lot of fun other than it running an hour late, totally conflicting with breed where Havoc was entered and a bit of chaos on that end. I didn't totally panic. I did start off and halt so quickly Envy was too far forward and crooked. We restarted and did pretty good for our first run. our holes are where I thought they'd be which is good. 14 signs. I usually do 4 at class without a reward but with our National in April I wanted to get in the ring a few times before then. Very proud of my girlie.

I am attending a day seminar locally for Rally this Saturday. Two judges will be there and it's a seven hour day. I'm sticking both boys in the car and hope to do Novice run thrus with them . I have to leave early from the seminar and hope we get through RA and RE signs at least. I think it depends who actually has working slots just how fast we get through the levels.

Planning on RN with Jules and Wally soon- maybe May/ June. Wally is a very deliberate dog so I can't spring it on him like I did with Cheers. I got coached over the phone and did 2 legs of her RN one weekend last year! She got injured soon afterward so did not complete the title. It's actually a bit confusing for a Utility dog to start rally trials- why am I talking, why is the leash on, where's the judge and why aren't they following us?!

Day 2 we felt like a team. 96 but 3rd this time. Very HAPPY with how Envy did especially with her age! We had a difficult maneuver near a ring exit with people watching. Left about turn and I almost lost her to visit but she came back whew!

We don't have anyone teaching Rally in my area but last year they had some classes about an hour's drive away. Kris was too young but I took one of my Shih Tzu x Maltese even though she had not really had much straight obedience training as I was doing Agility with her. I wanted to see what it was like so I could do it with Kris later on.

I really enjoyed it as you can talk to your dog and Lucy actually did really well. We just did different courses every week till we had done all the signs. I am going to see where they have some trials later in the summer. Around here the only Rally is CARO which probably is quite similar to AKC and CKC.

Excited and very nervous. Calla and I have our first Rallyo trial this weekend. Hope I do ok and don't stress her out to much. She is very sensitive and can pick on any changes in me. Hoping to watch a few people go before I have to. Have not had any classes. Just Ob training and watching lots of videos.
Any comments or things to look out for would be appreciated. This is a CARO trial.

Not sure if you have a dog that loves people/visit but one thing I didn't notice until in the trial was we had the left about turn right in front of the ring exit and a few people watching. EEK. Envy saw the before I did and I almost lost her. So next time I'm going to pay more attention to what is near exits etc.
