Okay, obedience people, I'm having some trouble with Leo's stand stay. She's pretty much figured out what "stay" means when she's sitting or in a down, but in a stand it's another kettle of fish. She goes into the stand easily enough, but as soon as I move, she moves, too. I know that she needs to learn that "stay" applies to standing also, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to convince her of that. I've tried holding her collar, putting a hand to her chest, shoveling in treats, and probably a couple of other things that I can't remember off hand. As soon as I even start to step in front of her, she moves.

Hmmm.... come to think of it, she doesn't really hold a stand when I'm right next to her. Maybe I should work more on that, before I try stepping away. Guess that means I've answered my own question. Just typing it out made me think about that pertinent fact. Thanks, guys.

Okay, I'm posting in the tracking and rally threads also...

I was playing around on the interwebs today, and finally located the AKC event statistics for 2012. Because I have a mutt, and a GSD, I checked out those statistics, as well as Dobes. Well, Dobes are rather under-represented in obedience, at least as far as titles go.

Dobes had 129 CDs, 35 CDXs, 8 UDs 3 UDXs, and no OTCH. There were some UDX+ and OM and OM+ titles, but not a whole lot. In the optional classes, there were 83 BNs, 11 GNs, 4 GOs, and 2 VERs.

In contrast, GSD had 220 CDs, 76 CDXs, 41 UDs, and several UDX+ and OM and OM+ dogs. In optional classes, there were 157 BNs, 26 GNs, 11 GOs, and 10 VERs.

All American Dogs had 176 CDs, 19 CDXs, 1 UD, 1 UDX and a smattering of UDX+ and OM and OM+ titles. Optional titles include 212 BNs, 12 GNs, 3 GO, and 4 VERs.

They're pretty under represented here too - I think there's been 1 OBCh Doberman in NZ (ever), AFAIK there has never been a WTCh, or an AGCh Doberman.

as i sarcastically mentioned in the other thread - look at how much emphasis we put on producing the exaggerated caricature that has become the doberman, and how little is cared about working abilities. don't forget the years it takes most dobermans to get to the top level - when most dogs are just entering the prime of their career, half of the doberman owners out there are rushing to finish a title because they work on a time limit due to health problems. many competitors that COULD do it with a doberman, opt not to put themselves through it - because of the time, heartache, and money it takes to get there, only to not be able to do it not because the dog CANT, but because you ran out of time.

That is what happened to Baron and I. If we would have had a little more time, we might have gone for Utility. But, for me, because it would take me a lot longer to get to a point where I would feel comfortable entering Utility, Baron would be going on 8 and with his DCM always in the back of my mind, I really would just rather play with him. He will be 7 in November and now we just play with the Utility exercises. Plus for me, there are not enough shows close to the area where we moved so again you have the time thing.

Not just in dobes, giant schnauzer too... They are so goddamm slow to mature, who wants a working dog that you can't start any serious training with til its 3? Think police departments want to spend that long waiting for a dog to mature before doing any training, only to find it has a service life of 3 years after? And people wonder why malinois dominate the police force now...

Utility Articles

Didn't want to start a new thread but hoping someone will read this and help. I most likely will not be advancing to Utility with Baron but am training some of the exercises just for fun. I might do a class in the fall just for fun also. Anyway, for those of you who have gone on to Utility, what size Articles did you purchase. I went ahead and ordered my articles from J&J Dog Supplies before doing my research and ordered the wrong ones. They will, of course, be going back but want to replace them with the right ones. I had measured his dumbbell and ordered the 2 1/2" bit which obviously was wrong as I ended up with mini Articles. Thanks in advance.

From what I understand, you need wider scent articles than dumbbell, because most dumbbells have tapered ends, while (most) articles don't. Take a pencil or dowel, measure his mouth like you did to get the bit size for the dumbbell, and then add at least 1/2 inch to the measurement. Don't forget to take end measurement into account, either. Get ends that are the same size as his dumbbell ends.

Are you getting single, double, or triple bar articles? I've heard that dogs with longer noses can benefit from having two or three bar articles, as opposed to single bar articles. The bar is higher off of the ground, and can be easier for them to pick up.

I've been SO BAD at training obedience lately, why did no one tell me that competing in a million different sports is so time-consuming?! LOL.

Have an obedience training day for working trials coming up in a few weeks, so we'll get to gauge where I'm at with Elsie and figure out exactly what we need to work on, and I'll get some advice on how to do that (I'm willing to bet money it'll be sendaways and heelwork!).

Some good obedience news though, I have found someone to train with! She is an obedience judge at the highest level, has had a number of OBCh. dogs and is all about training dogs to have fun, flashy performance in the ring and have a big grin on their face at all times when working. Just my kinda gal

It just takes time, time and more time for the confidence to come. How long has he had the Utility skills nailed down? I spent 6 extra months proofing, getting the kinks out of the routine and it only helped in the long run- still had NQ's but happy NQ with a mistake here and there.
I found that once I got something fixed, such as signals, moving stand- then the heeling took a dive, then that improved, etc. There is a lot of pressure in the Utility exercises, so hang in there and good luck!

We did our first sendaway to NO MARKER today! Elsie did great! We have been spending months working with getting sendaways and redirects really solid with cones, then today set up 2 cones and a blank spot, did a few sendaways and recall between the cones and recalls from the blank spot... Then did a full sendaway set up on a bare field and said go... and off she went, no looking back, just ran out in a straight line looking forward until I told her to stop and drop! SO COOL!!! Had an audience too, of some regular park goers that have been watching our daily training haha

Well, I had a mild panic attack today. I dropped an envelope in the mailbox. With the entry for Leo's first obedience and rally trials. I seriously considered diving in after it to pull it back out, but I figured I'd get in trouble for "tampering with the mail". I still have until the close of entries to tell them I've changed my mind. Right?

Someone on Facebook posted this handy link to help figure out what class to enter in at each level (A, B, or C*). Tools | ShowEntries.Info

There is also this nifty little chart that compares the different AKC obedience classes. http://showentries.info/wp-content/u...s-Guide-v2.pdf

Okay, we'll try this again.

This is from this past week. Leo training 2-25-14 002 - YouTube

This is from almost a year ago. Leo training 4-5-13 004 - YouTube

I'll admit to not being diligent and training every day, but I'd like to have seen some improvement. Sigh... I'm not sure which it is, me being a lousy trainer, her not being the brightest bulb on the tree, or a combination of the two. I'm almost to the point of completely giving up on obedience and rally, which is sad, because I really do enjoy showing.

Rosemary have you thought about saving up and taking a bronze course on the Denise fenzi academy? I'm doing OB200 Precision heeling at the moment and am loving it, its really helping me with some trouble areas.

I'm planning on doing a beginning nosework class this upcoming session. Guess I'd better look to see if they have a heeling class starting in April, too. It's just kind of discouraging to look at two videos so far apart, and not see any real difference.

Precision heeling and my rally class really helped break things down for me. Both of them do a lot of finding heel in various set ups and 1-2 steps before doing longer walks.

In the 4 weeks we've had the precision heeling class videos, we've made some huge strides. Denise has some of the basics on one of her blogs. It's towards the end of January and called precision heeling. They key for Envy and I was a TON of pivot work into heel and finding heel - tiny step to the right, tiny step forward, bigger step to the right. Each "session" is about 1 minute and then we play. I do about 5 mini sessions and then we are done and I do 3 of them about 5 times a day.

I didn't realize you were doing precision heeling too! We should be sharing videos!!

Are you going to sign up for heeling games?

YES! I saw a post that said there would be lot of games to choose from. I'm stuck at circles and stair steps, not getting a lot in straight movement BUT I'm happy with our progress so far. And we are pretty reliant on pocket hand at the moment
