What do you think about the Foundation Fundamentals 6-DVD Set designed by Mary Ellen Barry?
Clean Run: Foundation Fundamentals 6-DVD Set

Our trainer is using lures to teach my dogs to run ex) jump-tunnel-jump. Yes my dogs may get distracted and I don't know how to handle them except of popup a leash to get their attention. She gives me instructions what to do and what position I should take and when I should change the side and reward my dogs etc.
It's very important to use "target" (treats on piece of plastic) and train it at home... etc.

My dogs are OB trained but they are too excited running on equipment and sniffing other dogs on the ground.

She never mentioned flatwork... I wonder why

Before we started with our current class, we took a class that was more lure based and we went straight to equipment. As soon as we introduced a curve, it threw all the dogs off and they had no idea what to do. After every obstacle, they would slow down and look for the treat. The instructor herself I think did well in the sport, but it was not for us. In our current class, we spent nearly 2 months just on the ground, running in circles (circle work) and getting 2o2o contacts on a flat board as well as working on focus and motivation. Then we slowly introduced equipment and worked on front crosses, rear crosses, 180s, pinwheels, and front crosses with 180s and pinwheels. There has never been a hitch in the handling, because the dogs know exactly what to do and they pick up the equipment easier than the handling (and the handling picks up easier for the dogs than for us handlers...).

You are not only baking cookies for Niz The princess is teaching you agility!
That's great information you gave me. I will have a conversation with our trainer...
It's so much true....a dog will slow down looking for a treat!

Other than at contacts, which I treat to continue to build value, when I treat on the course is completely random. Also, if he did something difficult he was having problems or confusion with, I reward. That way it is a reward for hard work, not a lure, and he doesn't constantly expect it but is pleasantly surprised to get it. It doesn't distract from him, but instead motivates him to work harder. You also learn a lot of impulse control in a focus class, because some of the fields will have tons of treats laying in the dirt or woodchips that your dogs will have to ignore. Sometimes there are treats or cream cheese on our training facility indoor as well, and some dogs will run to eat it off the ground, but because Niz has such a bad nose I get lucky. But I also work on it by making sure I am more rewarding than the ground is. If the ground can reward him once, I want to reward him five times. Everything that is fun comes from me, and I can give him more of what he wants than anyone else in the class is my goal whenever I train.

That's why I don't use leash pops to train. I do most of my stuff off leash. It doesn't help me there All my training starts off leash. I only use a food/toy lure if it can be faded in 3 times or less. I find too many dogs get dependent on lures. I have no problem teaching a dog to go nose touch a target and using that target at the end. THEN rewarding with food. I also find when i shape something and make the dog figure it out, they learn it faster. Also if I leave food on a target, a dog can go to the target and get food without doing the obstacle/behavior right.

And to be honest, I'd see if there is another trainer around that can build your foundation work first. You should be able to do front, rear, blind crosses without the dog first then with the dog and no equipment THEN with equipment.

And yes it is very hard sometimes to keep a dog's attention with other dogs, object, people (good lord Vizslas LOVE people). But if you start slow and start right away teaching the foundation, it makes the end result a lot easier.

That looks like a pretty good dVD set. I haven't seen it though I do love Susan Garrett's Success with One Jump DVD. It might not teach foundation work, but would be good once you have that down.

I really like Susan Salo's jumping series - there is a puppy jumping one, and a 3-DVD foundation jumping one which is great. Greg Derrett has an okay foundation DVD out, covers the basics like waits, tugging, circle work and teaching directionals - if you're new to agility I think you'll really enjoy it.

I talked to my trainer about flatwork. She is OK to change her training schedule and show me how to do front, rear, blind crosses, etc before we continue with the equipment.
Thank you for the right direction!

I havent been doing this as long as many. But I wouldnt be doing any leash pops or corrections in general. Its suppose to be fun! I never yell "ah" or say "NO" just oh, lets try that again or uh-oh. Sometimes just a "giggle what were you doing" or "I'm sorry I pulled you off that" and off we go to the side lines. I am sure it was me who messed up not her. I agree with Adara I like to work with Kyrah off leash in everything we do. She does better offleash. The focus will come later. For me it was much later it seemed anyway. She is my first so I really dont know how long it takes in general. We did agility for about 1 1/2 yrs then took about a 4 month break. Since coming back her focus seems to have become more consistent. I like being in class with other dogs b/c it causes distractions.

Went to our first seminar last night. It was for beginners that had to be atleast running sequences. I have to say that I LOVED it! I wish I had gone to one sooner. I cant recall where or who said they didnt feel they were ready to go to one. I would say if you have the opportunity I would go. She was able to tell me so many things she saw with me and what she saw/felt Kyrah liked/didnt like. One in general is that when I started agility I was told to sit Kyrah at the start line and for various reasons it should be a sit not anything else. I have always fought her so to say. She just didnt care for it and it was a constant battle of saying it more than once and then she would look off into space. Auditor noticed this immediately and asked does this happen everytime? She said there are some battles best left unfought and that I was frustrated before I ever left the start line. She suggested we try some different positions. So we tried a stand/wait and then a down. She was very pleased with the down. Kyrah does that immediately and she said when I walked away Kyrah watched me the whole time. I could go on and on of all the great advise and tips that were given. Mom needs lots of work! Kyrah not so much! hehe

Growing Pains (Agility) I thought it would be fun to show a video of what I call growing pains.

Even with these growing pains Atlas is now running in Excellent B JWW and Excellent A Standard .

Atlas green dog making progress--whom I am so proud of.

Ring has 2 sides that are walls--front and back is plastic orange fencing. (Atlas has never worked a ring with orange plastic fencing) it is also his first time at this place.
Keep an eye on the dogwalk and his jump (plastic fencing) after the dogwalk.

Here is a Jumpers run-- Atlas JWW 5-05-2112 - YouTube

Thought I would put one in for Ms. Tamora

So time for an update on Elsie agility I think!

Foundation training is all going well, we are finally getting the hang of circle work at speed (prior to now speed in circle work = get too excited and bite lol), starting to get figure of 8's happening. Working on crosses is next on the flatwork agenda.

Elsie loves playing with any gear and takes any opportunity to show off - she especially loves the wobble boards! She is my demo dog for the intro agility course that I teach, and loves showing off her ladder work, wobble board skills and shaping to the class.

I am trying to avoid too much sequencing with her, she's so clever I'm sure I could have her doing full courses now, but I want to wait until we have all the foundation well and truely sorted (waiting is sooooo hard!). We have done most of susan salo's puppy/foundation jumping grids, and have done a couple of very simple sequences with tunnels and hurdles with jump bumps and elsie looooves it!

Our first trial will be April 13 & 14 2013.. counting down the days.....

Thought I posted this yesterday but apparently it didn't work...

We've been playing 2o2o on the step between the laundry and kitchen at home (just there) for fun... Unsure of how I am going to train contacts at the moment... Well Elsie seems to have taken matters into her own paws and is giving me 2o2o on everything she can... am not rewarding for it, but it's soo cute! We were in the clubhouse training and she runs over to the end of the seesaw on the ground and 2o2o, then tries on the flyball box (lol) and on one of the old agility tables (they are not used in agility here anymore).

Vader ran usdaa last saturday. . . Gamblers was a few jumps an af and lots of zoomies. New place - in a mall were they can see the mall people walking around (fencing & glass). Snookers started out fantastic and then he dropped a bar on a red jump - game over. Then his jumpers run. HE did super good in the opening - then got a wee bit distracted by his fans - then got right back to work for a great closing! He is starting to figure this whole trial thing. We are having a blast!!!

Jonesy's Awesome Weekend!!!!!!!!!

This weekend we ran in an ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club) Trial

We had 13 Agility runs he placed in 9 of them
8 First Places
1 Second Place (missed his weave entrance)
and he received HIT (High in Trial on Friday)

He earned 2 new titles (Jumpers Elite and Gamblers Novice) Gamblers is like Fast in AKC minor differences. And is now half a leg from his Reg Std Open title
(should have got it but time fault sigh... <-That was the 2nd place)

Our best run of the weekend was actually his first run of the weekend!

And this run I thought was funny, typically I expect him to be a tunnel sucker not an AF sucker...
"Come here"... No I think I will take the AF
"Go Tunnel".... No I think I will take the AF
"Walk it"... You want me to go tunnel?

I think we need more pics of the handsome man with his loot.
I actually like this picture better (From the first 2 days) Overall picture quality I think is better

I didn't take nearly as many pictures as I normally do

Speaking of tunnel sucks, here is a new definition. I apparently did not realize there were monster eating Vizslas inside that particular tunnel. I also think I could have gone and had lunch and come back and he'd still be weaving I'm THRILLED he weaved, that's his hard side, but goodnes gracious can we go a tiny bit faster. It was 95 out, but really that is painful!

Well I am glad Havoc made it safely out of the tunnel without any monsters hurting him (I've got to say I've never seen that before)

Poor Havoc and 95 degree weather. It was horrible here too, and I am sure being in Cali the Humidity is horrid too...

Which brings me to my next question anyone have any cordless fans they love and would recommend

Jonsey's mom - Awesome job! Loved the vids. So he was having a little fun with you! LOL

Adara. - I can tell you what I would have been told in class about his slow weaves...you were not moving!! He was going as slow as you. LOL Enjoyed the vids as always.

What would I do without them?

Aha! Yes, but that's also the problem. I get myself in a bind where can't go faster because I run out of space and run into the next obstacle. It's like a Catch 22. I need to try to take smaller steps and move faster. Thanks for the input!!!!
