Your grand total must be 50pts to Q. You must also be under the sct for the course.

You have the option of staying in the ring and getting as many pts as you can until the buzzer sounds or (what Bacchus and I do) get your required pts and get the hell out!!! I've seen many NQ because they stayed too long trying to get a couple of extra pts for that 1st place ribbon and get caught far away from the finish and lose a bunch of points trying to make it to the finish line.

It works to your advantage if you have a plan for running the course. As you move up in class it becomes a necessity. This is a game of planning. I try to get the send bonus done right away. If there is a fault then I use the rest of the course for training. I also try to have a "flow" to my plan. I try to send Bacchus in to that first obstacle as smoothly as possible and adjust my position outside the tape to maintain his flow. I miss fast class......it was my favorite.
I learned so much at this trial. I had a plan and am not ready yet to just run amuck around the course. If I dont have a set way to go I am pretty much lost. Thanks I was wondering what sct meant. That means she did really awesome on her first run b/c the sct was 43.00 and we did 26.81. I was very pleased they emailed me her results. I wasnt expecting that.

Why dont they have fast for you anymore?

What would I do without them?

Sct is the standard course time. If I remember correctly it is 32 seconds in Excellent Fast class. If you go over the sct you get 1 point deducted for every second you are over. Successful fast class teams have plans on how to proceed around the course with the least amount of ground covered, the high point value obstacles taken and a smooth entry into the send bonus. The teams that run it helter skelter have problems Qing.

We don't run fast class anymore because Bacchus has his Master Fast title. If memory serves me one of Bacchus' Novice Fast runs was 14+ seconds. Like I said we get our points and get out!!!!

Last weekend Atlas got his last Open Leg in JWW.
He is now in Excellent A for Standard and Jumpers. We are still working on a lot of things, but the focus is there. (well most of the time )

We’ve been practicing blind crosses at class. I find I do them better than front crosses! With the front cross, Flirt ticked bar 5 and landed hard. With the blind, NO tick, very smooth! There is more space in between the jumps than appears. I SUCK at drawing courses.

For A, we had to do the blind cross in between 5 and 6 and stay inside. Then we ran it with a front cross there. For B we had to the blind again between 5 and 6 and stay OUTSIDE. Then for the red course, there was no blind, but we had to RUN to get into place and then push on the dog’s line between 6 and 7. I learned when I have to RUN to get into place, I forget my collection cue and Flirt doesn’t slow down. That’s what I did with the front and with the red course. I really liked this drill though.

Blind crosses are fun! But they are also a leap of faith because you do lose site of your dog and hope they are reading you and you are in the right spot.
Nothing like getting decked from behind if you are not in the right spot.

THAT is my fear. Getting decked by a large female Doberman from behind is NOT my idea of fun. The way this course was set up if you could send to the tunnels then you had more time to get in place to safely do the blind. I'm not sure how often I'd see that in a real trial to risk my knees or lower back!

Vader got a Q in jumpers today! DOCNA. If we Q tomorrow he'll have his first agility title. My friend videoed it so I will post it when I get it. He did awesome. If it wasn't for handler error he would have been even faster. I pushed him around the 10th jump. If I would have left my arm down he would have been fine. Oh well we had a blast. We also ran gamblers. He was good but got the zoomies and was wild. I think he enjoys having an audience. Lol.

We started agility private lessons. Asha and Gino learned quickly how to jump a tire, run through tunnel and walk on V-wall on the first class. Then we learned jump-tunnel-jump and chute, dog walk and V-wall with a target. There were no other dogs but they were distracted with horses walking nearby and doggy smells on the ground. I had to use a leash to keep their focus.

It seems agility is a great fun for both dogs and they have no fears to jump high and run up/down hill on agility equipment.

I am planning to buy a tunnel and make my own jumps.

Please tell me if private lessons and some training at home is a good start. Thanks.

I would worry less about teaching equipment and think more about foundation behaviours - gear is the easy bit! make sure your trainer is well versed in training a good foundation and has an understanding of the new agility training techniques and isn't just throwing your dogs at gear and using lures for everything....

Private lessons are a good start. Make sure the one giving lessons is trialing and has the knowledge to go with it. Classes also will help with distractions.
If you have some equipment at home you can practice what you learned. Keep it short, dobermans hate repetition for long period of times. Lots of play in between for giving good effort. Have Fun!

Our trainer is one of the best in the area. We are using lures to teach agility gears. I guess that's the only way for dogs to learn at this point.

I don't know what is "foundation behaviours" in agility. Can you recommend me a good book or online reading?

We will take classes when my dogs learn basics. What do you mean "trialing"? Sorry I am a total newbie

Foundation is sometimes also called Flat work. It's the work hyou do BEFORE doing anything (jumps, tunnels, equipment, etc.) And a lot of work should be done first. Dog Toys, Dog Treats, Dog Agility Supplies, Dog Training Supplies probably had a good book on foundation. The equipment is reltively easy copared to the "dance" of getting them around the course or from a to b to c to d, etc.

We literally spend MONTHS doing flat work, no obstacles before going to build value with a jump which is just a shaping exercise with an upright. Invaluable though! Then we shape 180s and then 270s. Then we go on to tunnels, sending, finding the back of a tunnel. We do this without lures, but with shaping.

Vader wasn't on equipment until he had been through I want to say 3 maybe 4 sessions of foundation classes (session equals 8 weeks). We still do lots of flat work. When you watch people run you can tell who has spent the time and who was not.

When I run my 3 dogs, I can tell who has done "build value with a jump" even and who has not andthat's just ONE exercise of foundation work. My oldest dog started with my current trainer at 3 and the others started as puppies. HUGE difference. it's the ongoing joke at class. I run all 3 often at the same class and you can really tell a difference.
