Rally trials - how did you know you were ready?

I've been taking Maiya to APDT Rally classes for a very short time. She does well (not great) at home and during class. Biggest problem is distractions. We've also taken a couple of tradition obedience classes. (She does better at Rally).

Found out that next month there is a Rally trial nearby and I'm thinking of entering Maiya in puppy level. The trials around here seem to fill up quickly and some trials do not offer puppy level so I have to decide soon whether to enter.

So, for those of you who entered any trials even though you might not have been quite ready - is it worth going just for the experience? Or did you wait until you were sure your dog was ready?

I'm wondering if I should just keep training and look for fun matches for the time being. I'm told that with the setup of this facility, there will be minimum distractions so that's a plus.

No expert here but my opinion.........any ring time is good time. Whatever mistakes she makes or you make will help you know what to work a little extra on. Good luck and remember to breathe.

I did classes for about a year but was taking her to shows to get use to the enviroment of the shows. I didnt want to put her in the ring and throw away money. She now has her RN placing 1st once and 2nd twice. Now we have another show in a week for her RA. I feel when the dog is having more spot on days then off or distracted days your ready.

If it's a smaller show with a cheap entrance fee I would enter, if it is a bit expensive I would still bring her along anyway, get her used to the show environment

I agree with VZ, And Disco

I don't do Rally, But I just did Jonesy's first agility trial... And We have only been doing it for about 5-6 months...

We only did Jumpers course, but just the ring time in general was nice to see what we needed to work on...

It was also a cheaper show then some of the others around

I'm sure if things work the same in America, but in NZ we have two main types of shows, ribbons trials and champ shows. Champ shows are NZKC events and have cash prizes and are worth points towards titles, they are bigger (people travel from all over for them) and more expensive to enter, ribbons trials are just put on by clubs and have ribbons as prizes... entry tends to be about $5 and usually it is just locals at the events and they are very relaxed.

Any ring experience is good experience. Listen to the critiques the judges offer you afterwards. (Be sure and ask, they will go over your score sheets). You will not get yourself or your dog used to the ring unless you are actually in it. Fun matches are great but it seems like they are few & far between. Good luck to you!

I agree that any ring time is good time, It's difficult to realize how over prepared you want to be when you get into the ring. The ring is a totally different environment than practicing at home or with a club particularly when the nerves set in. But most important have fun and remember to breathe.

Thanks for the encouragement and tips. The advice to get ring experience makes sense so I just took the next step by obtaining my temporary APDT Rally registration number.

breathe... breathe... breathe...

If your dog and you can do all of the exercises, you are ready to compete in AKC Rally Obedience. I believe APDT is more difficult than AKC.

I trialed Avril onced when she was a puppy, it didn't go well. (It was just at a specialty, so atleast not too many people saw) I waited for almost a year before trialing her again. The first trial, I saw what we needed to work on and I saw how she would be in the ring. She got her RN in 3 straight trials after that. So I think if you just want to see how she does and for fun, if you know the signs, go for it. If you want her to win/qualify I would wait until you are 100% sure she is ready.

ETA: Just realized this is 2 months old. Did you show her there?

We did go to the trial and had 4 qualifying runs that weekend. Maiya now has her RLP title. And I just signed up for a CWAGS trial that will be held this month.

I really appreciate the responses and encouragement from all of you. It gave me the little push that I needed to enter.

I would go for it! We just did our first match and I know we arent ready. I try to bring her to as many trials as possible to get her used to all the noise & distractions. I dont believe there are many matches and lucked up on them. Undoubtly I was just as nervous in the first run even tho I really didnt know till I was done. When I was finished my heart was beating a hundred miles an hour and kinda had the shakes. It was really strange to b/c when I was in the ring I didnt think of or even see anyone outside the ring. It was like it was just her and I. Me trying to keep her attention, running and playing.

What would I do without them?

I agree with everyone else. Any ring time is good time. We never have any matches close by in my area so we had to go the regular trial route for Obedience and Rally. Just remember to breath and have fun.
