Zippy and Agility

I went to my first class in Agility with Zippy, and Wow! I feel like we've found a whole new world, I am hooked and Zippy had a great time. Rally is doing wonderfully with her Obedience too, so now we will be in all three rings, obedience, conformation and agility!! I can't wait to compete, what a thrill!

I am very lucky to have one of the most awesome instructors. She took all the time in the world with Zippy when she didn't want to go through the tunnel. She taught us both and didn't rush a thing! Now Zippy LOVES the tunnel and I mean she Really loves it! She jumped through the tire with no hesitation, we did the waiting table and the unstable table to get them used to the teetor totter. Excuse me if I don't know all the correct terms yet, I am so brand new to agility. All I know is that it's a blast! Any helpful hints to get a beginner started I would love to hear.

Sounds like a blast! I couldn't offer any agility tips, since I've never even gone to a single class but it looks super fun.

When do you think is Rally's OB competition, by the way?

something clever goes here.

I am so glad you are having such a good time.
Agility is a wonderful sport and the dogs do love it. If we are in a facility that is doing more than one thing and they see the agility course they look at it like can we go and do that--they just love it.

Can`t wait to hear of your progress.

My advice is find a good insturctor which I think you have and take your time, don`t rush anything. Have fun!

I always wanted to do agility with Niko, I think he would be quite good at it.

I am glad you are having fun!

I'm so happy to hear that Zippy is enjoying agility! I just knew she'd take to it like a duck to water. I can't wait to see pictures of her in action once you both start competing.

I'll still be doing both but I can definitely see dropping conformation like a hot potato once you get into agility. I feel so uncoordinated right now though, I think it will be easier when I don't have to use the leash anymore....lol But it is so much fun!! And it's such a fun and positive experience for the dogs, and I think that Zippy has the absolute perfect agility name!

Thanks Reds!! I can't wait to start competing! It's such a long way off though, I wish I could fast forward to it, but the training is fun. Maybe you'll do this with Journey, she will love it!

Yes, it is much easier without the leash. I'm fortunate my classes have all started without a leash. I'm uncoordinated and it's one less thing for me to worry about. Plus when most dogs get off leash, then you have to retrain it all anyway. This is NOT to knock your instructor, but comment on my lack of coordination

Agility really is a fun sport, the dogs absolutely love it. They love going to class, and they love going to trials. Delta recognizes the building we train in, and all of the local trail sites. She just can't wait to get inside. I am glad to hear another dobe person has joined the agility crowd.

Great instructors can make a world of difference. As you start learning more and more about the sport you will find there are many good books and articles out there which focus on handling skills, course memorization, teaching obstacles, teaching crosses, motivation, control, and much more. Clean Run is the Premier agility resource for books, gear, and other things.

I love nothing more than the joy of watching the dogs doing something they love. The expression on a new dogs face when they first learn an obstacle is priceless. It's like a little kid saying "Look what I can do!" They feel so special.

I have never understood why more breeders and owners don't get their dogs involved in obedience and/or agility. While I love going and showing at conformation shows and will always be involved in handling, I find the joy I get from a run at an agility trial often exceeds that of which I get in the conformation ring.

You are going to have a blast with Zippy!!!

Yes, agility is a blast! We are new to it also. I find it quite humorus when I call the obstacle by the wrong name.

What would I do without them?

That's awesome you and Zippy are having so much fun! Its a blast, for sure.

Fiona and I just started our first agility class a few weeks ago - we're both hooked, too! I already can't wait to get Tali going in agility but we're still building with some obedience classes for now. By this summer we'll all 3 be training in agility though.

I completely agree. Tyson just started his first agility class over the weekend and I've never seen him happier when he gets through an obstacle especially when he made it through the tunnel. He refused to do it at first but with some diligence, he finally went through and now he loves it.
