Getting Back into Training Classes

Finally getting back into training classes since back in 2012. My plan when I adopted Drogo was to get him into classes in the spring. Probably start with a private to see what class the trainer would put him in and then get started. Goals for him are a CGC, do Rally, Trick Dog, and nosework. If I could find any lure coarsing events near me, would love to do that with him because he is so fast and athletic. Well, COVID-19 had other plans. Now that PA is starting to open up (who knows for how long), I signed Drogo up for some private classes as she doesn't have group classes started yet as she has to complete the classes that were canceled in the spring. Well we had our first class yesterday and I have to say I am very proud of my boy. She said just working with him she would put him in at attention and handling class to start. She gave us some exercises to work on and we did some of the CGC exercises and she said he, most likely, would not have trouble passing it. He did very well when the trainer brought her 6 Boarder Collies in and put them in their crates in her office. No reactions at all. We did the side by side walk by with one of her dogs and he did very well even with the little Boarder Collie did the staring thing at him. Next private in two weeks.

Drogo came to me with basics and I have been fine tuning him since sheltering in place. The only problem is not being able to get him out and about. He has been to the groomer twice and that has helped and I might see if on my next visit, she will help a bit with the CGC exercises. Roxanne is a very reputable Doberman breeder near me. Muehller Dobermans. I have been training in different places in the house. Upstairs, downstairs, in the fenced in yard, and outside in the field but not the same as going out to a pet store or Home Depot. We have been taking him with us when we do go out to the supermarket, etc. because only one of us goes in at a time. His only issue is he is reactive in the car when we pass horse and buggies and people on bikes but we are working on that and he is getting a bit better. Also, we had 2 incidents when we did curbside pickup and the person came up to the car to talk to us, he reacted. So the trainer gave me some pointers but again the problem is having someone to help. The trainer said at our next private if it is not too hot, we could work on it the last 15 minutes of our class.

So, we are excited about getting back in the swing and the good thing is Drogo loves learning and is so so treat motivated!

This is awesome, Lois! He sounds like a really promising dog and I'm sure you'll be a successful team together.

How lucky for him that he landed in your home where he'll get to learn and explore and show what he's capable of. And of course lucky for you to find another awesome Doberman partner. <3
