Boonís freestyle thread

Boon is just the most creative, elegant, ebullient partner so he gets his own thread. I’m so lucky. We do freestyle that is built on natural movement the dogs come up with combined with required technical work like pace changes, level changes, lateral movement, etc. We don’t ask our dogs to ever do things repeatedly that are potentially very harmful to their bodies, such as hopping around on hind legs/like a kangaroo.

This freestyle is all about a team moving as one. Movement is supposed to show off the natural grace and athleticism of the dog, much like dressage does for a horse. Music is chosen to the rhythm of the dog’s gait at a dynamic trot and gets more complex as you move up the levels. We don’t use any music that people might be tempted to sing along with because we never want to take the focus off of the dog. It’s all about the dog.

This video is improv play. Improv is where the dog has a chance to create brand new freestyle movement vocabulary, things the human just wouldn’t have thought of. Ever! Sorry about the goofy beginning but I wanted to show the way we always begin improv, with silly stuff and play. A lot of the time I don’t know what Boon is going to do - he came up with a new cool turn, a moving backward lateral thingy and that pretty jump.

How to recreate? That’s why we video - we can’t see ourselves so we need that help to set it up again and hopefully capture it. Luckily, dogs tend to repeat play movements.

Always Playiní!

After reading ECINís Mr. Business story regarding Mr. Businessís recent turtle encounters ....I think Mr. Business could be a natural at this Freestyle sport.
