The Barn Hunt Thread

Okay, I figured since we have "official" threads for just about every other sport, how about one for Barn Hunt? We can ask questions and brag about our dogs' accomplishments. For those of you scratching your heads and going "Huh? What in the heck is Barn Hunt?" here is the link to the Barn Hunt Association's website for more information and official rules. Barn Hunt Association LLC | The sport for vermin hunting dogs of all sizes

Leo and I are going to a Fun Test this weekend, the first in the area. If she seems interested, we will be going to the first sanctioned Barn Hunt Trial in the area, coming up in May.

Speaking of accomplishments, hey, Ricky Bobby's mom, don't you have something to brag about? :D

Wow, I'd have been happy with just two hours away. There is one group in the Dallas area, and another in the Austin area. Both of them are like a 5 to 6 hour drive. This one is less than half an hour away. Happy, happy. :)

I hope they decide to keep it up, and hold more events.

falnfenix 04-23-2014 03:15 PM

well, the only way to ensure it is to get people to go. i hope, for your sake, that they continue to hold events at that location. :)

Ricky Bobby and I had our first Barn Hunt trial this past weekend ! We were going back and forth between Barn Hunt and UKC Conformation so we missed one of his 6 runs. He earned his RATI in just under 6 seconds. He earned his RATN and two legs towards his RATO. One of his RATN runs he found the rat and did the tunnel in 3 seconds but it took me another 33 seconds to get him to stop looking for the rat long enough to do a climb LOL. I wish we hadn't missed that 6th run because he may have finished his RATO, oh well! Here are the videos from his two Open Runs. He says Barn Hunt is the BEST EVER!

Well, Leo and i went to a fun run today, and I think we like Barn Hunt. :)

Our first run, Leo wouldn't go through the tunnel or climb on the bales, and acted scared of the rat when we showed her where and what it was.

Second run, we "helped" her through the tunnel and to climb, and she was more interested in the rat.

Our third run, she went through the tunnel with no trouble, but still had to be "helped" to climb. She found the rat, though. She was acting VERY interested in one particular area, so I called it, and was disappointed when they said it was wrong. :( But, when they picked up the tube, he was in it. They thought they had stashed him on the other side, so she was right, after all. :P

On the fourth run, she tunneled, climbed and found the rat all on her own.

I'm kind of proud of the little bushy butt. :D

The first trial in the area is coming up next month. I'm looking forward to it.

Going to our first introduction of barn hunt this weekend. Soo excited. Never had one even close to us before. Calla has a strong pray drive so a little worried about how to get her off the target.

Jonesy'sMom 06-09-2014 01:07 PM

Jones and Jett went to there first fun match this last weekend....

In the Instinct test both found the rat very quickly. Jones had to say hi to the Judge first before pointing out the rat, but he got 4th and Jett came in 10th because I wasn't sure on her "mark" so I made her check the other tube a second time...

In the Novice fun course neither found the rat in the amount of time... Jett treated it more like tracking and I couldn't get her nose off the ground to check things that were higher... Jones I actually pulled him off the rat, the judge made sure to inform me of that... bad mom...

If my local club host them I will be entering them!!!!

Rosemary, they are having a barn hunt trial in Kenner, LA on Nov 8th and 9th. I know its still a drive for you.

Kyrah and Dexter loved it! They both earned their RATI, RATIN and one leg towards RATIO.

Rosemary 10-02-2014 10:10 AM

Shoot. I'm already planning on taking Leo to an American Temperament Test Society TT on the 8th. :(

We did a barn hunt practice as a club, just for fun! Gretchen loved it! She was a natural and apparently a pointer!

Butcher (RIP) was a true pointer. My daughter in law and I would take him on back country wilderness hikes. His ability to gently stalk and point out both small and large game was amazing for a doberman. Deer, elk, game birds, porcupine, even a black bear a time or two. He was never trained and never used for hunting, but his natural ability was amazing.

We were having lunch one afternoon deep in the Salmon-Huckleberry wilderness. Butcher wandered off. Generally, he never wandered off from us, especially during lunch! LOL. I found him up the trail in full point about 10 yards from a gorgeous buck in velvet. Loanda (my DIL), Butcher and I just sat and watched until that big boy finally decided to meander off. It was so cool...

Just registered for our first official trial! 4 trials in 2 days but we are only doing 3. I thought doing instinct on both days would be a good idea. Does everyone else do instinct or no? Or just as novice?

scorning 01-25-2016 01:33 PM

Hannah just earned her first novice leg! My Great Dane was only 6 seconds off, which was really good for him, the courses aren't really built for giant dogs.

Gretchen Red - I usually don't sign up for instinct, but the next trial I am going to has a special that includes all the novice runs and instinct for a set price, so I'll probably do it then. Otherwise, I don't think it is worth it.

Thank you for the advice. Someone suggested I do it since we've only trialed for practice once (3x in one day but it was 4mo. ago). I hope to get a practice class in at least one more time before the trial. In the future I probably won't do the instinct then.

Well we did 2 more practices and with 3 trials we got our RATN! Placing 3rd in our final trial. Gretchen finds the rat quickly but I get a bit nervous to call it until I'm sure!

StrykersPerson 02-15-2016 08:25 PM

I have heard of this and seen it on TV. Looks like a lot of fun. Not for the rat so much?:)

Gretchen_Red 02-15-2016 08:30 PM

The rat can sometimes get a bit shaken up but everyone tries to respect that it is an animal and should be treated with care.

Dobes seem to be so good at it, and a pitty is the one who set the record time!

StrykersPerson 02-15-2016 08:48 PM

Gretchen_Red,

I believe what you say regarding, "Dobes seem to be so good at it". Ktrin, one of my Dobes, could out-scent an old Beaus' failed hunting dogs when the Beau was trying to Train/Test his dogs when hiding pheasant/quail leftovers.

Did that even make any sense? LOL

Gretchen_Red 02-15-2016 08:58 PM

Yes, it did lol.

Rat safety is actually very important in the BHA, and any report of abuse and/or mistreatment of rats is promptly investigated, and any club found guilty of such is immediately and permanently banned from the organization.

The rats are generally owned by either the judge or rat wrangler, and are used to being handled, and the tubes are designed to be as safe as possible for both rats and dogs.
