Ha ha!!! "Um, Mom, you want to get this off of me?".

Looks good. I'd probably encourage a slightly less extreme indication, though.

Ya think? He is maybe just a tad dramatic sometimes.

And thanks I feel like we came pretty far in 6 weeks.

The cat thinks it's hilarious to tease and distract Silas the entire time we're working. Sometimes he'll hide behind things and leap out at Silas, when he hits on a scent, or he'll bop Silas' nose nonstop while Silas is on a box. Hilarious

Third class tonight and the instructor paired birch with treats. Indy did well so we will practice at home with the scent. Really enjoy this!

My puppy is three months old. We (parents and puppy) are still learning basic commands and behavior. He has SO much energy but learns quickly. When should we try to begin training in nose work?

If you want to wait a bit, the FDSA will be offering their Intro to Nosework class in their April session. Fenzi Dog Sports Academy - NW101: Introduction to Nosework

You can start teaching a lot of things pretty young, though. This blog post talks about the beginnings of training the obedience scent discrimination exercise. Lyra – 13.5 weeks scent discrimination | Denise Fenzi

Thank you so much! I am excited about trying something new. We have always had dogs but never decided to go beyond basic training. I hope we can find something he will enjoy.

Indy is doing well in class, we have 3 left. Tonight, was scent only and he found it every time. He reminds me of a Great White shark, slow and methodical. There is a German Shorthaired Pointer in class that I nicknamed the Mako shark, the fastest shark. She runs through the course and all of sudden catches the scent lol. It's fun to see how each dog has their own way of finding the scent.

There is a c-wags event March 1st. Has anyone heard of this organization? The trainer told us that they allow for a mulligan if the dog doesn't find the scent the first time through.

Next week, he plans to introduce a second scent.

C-WAGS uses birch and clove, like NACSW and UKC, but their other two scents are cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) and Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus). C-WAGS

They do all have their own searching styles, don't they?

Richter is going to be back in Nosework class again, and we've been doing fun "sniffing field trips" with a local group of Nosework people, too. I'm hoping to enter him in the next local NW1 trial - we think there may be one in the summer or fall here. Even though we took quite a few months off he's still doing great; it's not a skill they forget, it seems! I'm really hoping to be trial-ready by the next trial opportunity, and that means lots of practice in lots of places. It's extra hard to get in those exterior and vehicle searches in the cold MN winter! We just did an exterior search on Sunday that was on a brick exterior wall (haven't done an exterior in months, and they were hard hides) and Richter found them SO FAST...I think he was saying "it's crazy cold out here, we gotta get back in the car!"

The trainer introduced cypress tonight and all the dogs found it right away. I'm amazed at how fast they caught on to a new scent. I have some to practice with at home along with birch.

Should I alternate the scents in the same training session or separate sessions with each scent? I didn't think to ask in class.

If he's good on all the scents, I'd go ahead and mix them up. Ilka and Leo have been introduced to birch, clove, and anise, and I'll use all three in a search.

We finished our last class tonight and we are signed up for intermediate which starts in a couple of weeks.

The head trainer at our center is going to try to host a C-WAGS trial the end of May so we should be ready to try out for Novice by then. There is a trial this weekend but it's an hour away and Indy gets stressed on long drives so hosting a trial close by would be great.

Still loving this!

Found out that there will be a local trial. I'm super excited. It is for end May so we have lots of time to dust off.
We broke out the scent tins the other day and as soon as he caught the scent he was pumped. Once we lose a bit more snow I'll start doing vehicle searches.
Yaaaay!

Our training center is holding a trial in May as well. It will be through C-WAGS and we can possibly get two legs towards novice. Our intermediate class is still on birch and cypress. Can't wait!

We have a NACSW trial coming up in July. We'll try for our NW1 title...don't know if we'll be ready, but we'll try to get a space in the trial and then give it a go!

Wish we had C-WAGS down here. (Wish we had a lot of things here, for that matter...) We have UKC, though. South Texas Nosework Dogs is in Houston, so they are what I'd consider "local", as it's only a couple of hours drive.

Indy has a C-WAGS registration number now so there is no turning back, lol. The competition is on May 31st so hoping we will be ready. It's only two legs towards novice but it's a start. I'm glad C-WAGS gives a second chance, we ran a mock trial in class last night and I needed it. I'm having trouble reading Indy's cues. Sometimes he puts his nose on the box, sometimes sits and other times just stands there and stares at me. Maybe we just had an "off" night. I've been practicing at home without boxes but will start using them so I can better catch his cues. He knows what to do, it's me.

Woo hoooo
We're in for the trial here at the end of May

Saturday we're doing a container and interior fun trial.

Right time right place!
The day before the trial they're doing a workshop with the judge (all three elements) and I signed us up for that too!

I've known no deeper love, than that from my beloved Doberman

We did a fun mock ORT for a fundraiser last weekend on anise and clove. Richter raced to the box on anise super fast, was bouncing up and down on it, and the volunteers were just laughing at me because I waited to call it. Richter sometimes fakes me out on boxes, so I was waiting just a little while, and I called it at about 20 seconds He was a hoot! It was so obvious, but then again, he's sometimes been nearly as insistent on non-odor boxes before! He was almost as fast on the clove box, too. Too bad it wasn't a real ORT - we would have gotten those out of the way! It was a super fun time with some local Nosework folks and a great fundraiser. Beautiful day out, too...had a TON of fun.
