Just wanted to give a quick shout-out thank you to everyone who had great suggestions earlier this year on training at home. Looking forward to working toward NW3 Elite come Spring. Y'all on this thread are super supportive and have some great advice. You rock.

Hoss continues Nosework classes now at intermediate level...so new instructor along with it being a 8PM class.
The later class is good as its a lot quieter in our training center. Most of the classes are done for bathe night.
Also a new instructor and I notice a big difference in Hoss.
He has not smashed a box since I started working with her.
No blind hides so far.....I always know where the scent is and she really stresses to let out the lead and give Hoss room to roam.
So far she always pairs the scent with a treat on top of the tin.
Last night we were focusing on how dogs may always skip on checking the first container or the last so off Hoss goes and he finds the scent in the first box..........then he continues checking each container.........then on two occasions last night as she was having me watch his body language closely.......he skims over the second scent.......then boom....his snout kinda scooped up then swerved back and a turn around the the box he just passed.....then this real quick look up at me. Dang it happened so fast .......but I saw it......when he did that a second time later in the class .....I was so excited.....I think the Human is finally getting it.
Hoss is really improving.......he takes in everything , then will stop for just a moment then makes his move and goes right to the source .........HE IS THINKING!!!!Hoss is working. So much fun and making a lot of new friends.

I have some Questions for you Nosework Geeks....

Eva is our smeller of our two Dobes. She LIVES to sniff, in house and especially on daily walks, even at recent awards ceremony (smelled up school superintendent presenting on stage!) However she can be a stubborn Dobe and less biddable. Spock on the other hand, is more high energy, playful and biddable, but not totally obssessed with smelling. When we play "find the treats" in the house, where I hide kibble pieces and let both Dobes in the room to find, Spock is the most enthusiast, finding the treats faster than Eva, who is a slow, but methodical sniffer.

I also play "Three Cup Shell Game" with both of them, placing a piece of kibble under one of three cups and then shuffling around. Spock loves this game usually finds the kibble cup by knocking over with his nose or giving the trademark "Dobe Paw Smack" to the cup! Eva is not so enthusiastic about the game. Spock is also much more prone to obiedience commands than Eva, who sometimes must think about things a bit...

Question 1- Is it ever too late to get into Nosework with Dobes? Both Spock and Eva are turning 10 y/o this year.

Question 2- Which Dobe would be more suited for Nosework, the Sniffer Eva or the Enthusiast, Biddable Spock? Which trait is more important for NW?

Thanks in Advance...

I don't think so. I started with my Zeus when he was 10. It was mainly for fun since I was doing it with my other two and didn't want to leave him out. He's now 13 and I have been entering him in a few akc trials here and there since I take him along with the other two. He has q'd every search and has a few legs in different elements! Maybe you can hook up with an instructor or class in your area.

I agree that it's not too late, and I think both dogs would appreciate the sport - it's really about letting the dog lead the search and learn how to use their nose, and you learning about their individual searching style and how to read them, and about the teamwork you build together.

Yep, it's never too late! Brandy and I started when she was seven. We trialed up until she was almost 12.
As far as which dog to take, what are your goals? Do you want to gain some titles or just go out and have fun? Drive is a great thing in nose work and being able to work independently from their handler. I've seen dogs get frustrated during a tough search and revert back to obedience (if they were trained in that). They want to please their handler somehow, darn it!

It's not too late. And do it with both of them.

You can either look for a trainer in your area or else learn online with FDSA. Registration is open now, and classes start on the 1st. This is the intro to Nosework class. https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.co.../courses/13342

Question Tips for a beginner?

Hi so I just made the decision to start jazz in nose work. I got turned onto it by my nephew and his Doberman Jake. I went with him to Jake’s first trial and oh my goodness I fell in love. Due to my physical limitations and disabilities there are a few things that jazz and I can enjoy together but I definitely think this is going to be one of them. So far I have only hidden treats in the rock wall along our driveway and throughout the house and when I tell him find it he is very determined and doesn’t stop until he’s found everything. So I just ordered my essential oils and metal tins can’t wait to get started. However I’m very nervous there are so many different suggestions on how to start teaching your dog to identify the scents what do you guys do? Very first steps.....

I love the online classes at Fenzi Dog Sports Academy. You just missed the enrollment deadline for this session, though. The next session starts on April 1st, with enrollment opening on March 22nd. This is the class that will be running then. https://www.fenzidogsportsacademy.co.../courses/14305

I just started a nosework class through Fenzi.....Bronze.......LOVE IT.....I am able to view the homework/videos being presented by the gold and silver members.
Then the instructor will critique and give ideas to those individual members.
So I learn through their success and mistakes.
As a bronze member I cannot interact with the instructor like gold and silver but Hoss and I have found a great path of knowledge through Fenzi.
The training center I am going to now for nosework is good for practice BUT was allowing me to unknowingly develop some bad techniques.
Plus in my training center it gets so loud so I cannot hear the detailed instructions many times.
So real glad I picked up with Fenzi.....I can review again and again through the course homework and lectures.
So now I follow Fenzi .....and then use those learned techniques at my training school.
Nosework is so much fun and it is the only thing that exhausts my dog Hoss.......challenges his brain for sure.
I am so glad Rosemary always reminds us of this option of Fenzi ...check it out.

The bold is mine...just had to echo this! So so tiring

Sypha and I had a "mock" NW3 trial on Saturday and we had a blast!!! It was so fun, so challenging, and it's too bad it wasn't a real trial...we would have titled

I would also check the NACSW site and see if there are any certified instructors in your area.

That is so awesome!!! Congratulations!

I believe one of my instructors was at that trial with her dog!

It crossed my mind when I saw her name on the line up sheet. I didn't think there'd be any way you'd be all the way up in NC though. It was nice to meet you!!
